WEST Coast’s Shannon Hurn looks set to miss the next two matches after he was charged with a rough conduct offence.

Hurn drew 325 demerit points and a three-game suspension for making contact with Port Adelaide’s Paul Stewart that can be reduced to two with an early plea.

Stewart broke his nose and was knocked unconscious by Hurn’s bump and stretchered off the field.

bit stiff for Hurn, but as least he'll miss against us:)

I think they'll fight the negligent part and get it down to accidental. Would that mean 1 week with a guilty plea?

2 weeks is fair.

Hard, high contact is exactly what they've been trying to stamp out. If someone has their head over the ball, you can't go in hard. You have to be able to stop yourself. The fact that he was going for the ball until the last second means it's negligent, not reckless, but you can't argue with the decision given the current rules in place, and frankly that sort of thing which can potentially end a career if the contact is just right needs to be severely punished so people don't do it.

Its a bloody joke!
Why bother doing the one thing you are taught as a youngster ie going for the ball in case you make inadvertent head high contact. Its the same in society, always finding blame on someone and no one is responsible for their own actions.

He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction

If he doesn't have a prior record doesn't that mean he's got a good record??? He should be entitled to another discount for having a good record ffs

Still i was expecting 2 weeks from the start

I read somewhere this morning that you only get a good record bonus after 5 years with a clean record. Hurn has only played for 4 years so just misses out.

Harsh, the guys a fair player as well

I'd sympathise with you, but ever since Pickett got targetted and then Burgoyne got 3 matches for charging with his BACK, I'm waiting for the rest of the AFL teams to suffer as well.

If it's accidental, it's not rough conduct so he gets nothing.

But the rules say that any high contact where a player bumps when either tackling or contesting the ball was a realistic option is negligent, so the case for accidental has to revolve around that point, which is going to be difficult.

He couldn't tackle because his opponent never took hold of the ball, and he was contesting it because the ball was in between them when he hit Stewart who had dropped to one knee basically.

I couldn't see how he had any other option- never ran past the ball, couldn't have tackled, had to make the contest. Really he was just unfortunate that Stewart dropped lower than he did. I don't think we'll contest it because he's too important to lose for another week.

Today Luke Hodge picked up a low ball and literally threw himself head first into a Geelong player standing next to him, Hodge got a free kick.

Lucky for the Geelong player Hodge didn't get a broken nose because according to your argument it doesn't matter at all when the injured player contributes to the high contact:cool:.

Ultimately if Stewart had stayed on his feet instead of slipping, dropping to one knee after fumbling the ball from a crap handball from Westhoff he wouldn't have a broken nose and we wouldn't be having this conversation.:(

Debatable. He still had his head down. Take away the fumble, he still most likely would be in the same situation. Hurn chose the bump. He was doing this regardless.

The crap handball....agreed. Hospital handball at its finest definition.

Hurn has three options at this point- go the ball, go the man, or avoid the contest. He can't tackle because the ball is in dispute, and he is clearly attempting to pick it up after Stewart fumbled it.

Stewart drops to one knee but does not have his head right over the ball, at this point Hurn can only prepare for the collision. He can pull out of the contest and get dragged, or dive with his head over the ball, which would be a dangerous option for both players.

The ball is still there between them, so Hurn never runs past it to make contact with his opponent, but attacks the contest hard.

If Hurn avoids the contest because his opponent might slip, he gets dragged and looks pathetic. The Stewart fumble opens the door for Hurn to contest, but he can't tackle because Stewart never gathers the ball.
