"If I hear one more time that the Australian team is preparing for the 2007 World Cup, I am going to scream"

"Has anyone actually said, 'Hang on, we need to win this VB Series' ?"

From my most hated cricket commentator to my favourite in a matter of seconds.

Fair enough point, but in 5 years time will anyone care who won the 2005/2006 VB Series?

In 5 years time will anyone care who won the 2007 World Cup?

World Cups are much more important than a VB Series win, although we should be fielding a strong XI in any case.

Agree totally..!!

So basically, just void the 4 years of cricket we play inbetween each World Cup because its of less importance??

We should always have the best team on the field.

Ricky Ponting does not need a rest. Hes hardly had a long, tiring innings this series. He should be playing on Thursday.

The Australian Selection Policy should be to Play the best side available until, in the case of the VB series, your in the final or best of series, until the series can't be lost. I mean, WTF, Australia lost the last game easily and rest the best batsman.

You can still play your best side and look towards the WC

Exactly. Its ridiculous. Australia couldnt chase down Sri Lanks runs on Sunday, so they rest their best batsman for the next match? How does that make sense??

If they are asking people to pay top dollar to watch these guys, the least they can do is play the best available players. Adelaide get short sheeted every year, they deserve to see the best players as well, not just Sydney and Melbourne. This year no Ponting. Imagine paying to see your favourite band and then find out half of them aren't playing.

Add to that the fact that hard working Aussies like myself pay good money to go and watch the best team available, and instead get to see second rate domestic players. McGrath didn't even get to play at his home ground for christ sake!! I have NEVER been to an Australia Day game, this year will be my first, and the Aussie captain isn't even in the team, its a disgrace.

Beat me to it. That will teach me to watch The Simpsons before finishing my post!

When did he say this? Pretty sure I heard KOK also say it on ABC radio the other day around the time of the Roy/Clarke partnership.

Play the best team on offer. You don't flirt with your form.
Resting of (older) bowlers is the only one I agree with. ie I'd prefer to see McGrath play at 100% capacity for 70% of the season than at 70% capacity for 100% of the season.
Resting batsmen doesn't make sense to me. You'd get enough opportunities to try people out due to injuries or form slumps.

Sticking to a single guy as the super-sub (Hopes the obvious choice, except on greentops, when you might consider Hogg) would also help settle the side down.

That's probably the only thing he has got right. We are preparing for the 07 WC.

In saying that he is the worst commentator around

i know which trophy i would take.

i dont see the harm in giving some players some experience as shown in last world cup not the same 11 was used every game.

Chappell can state the bleeding obvious but also picks up things other commentators don't. For eg. the different grips bowlers use, he always knows what's going on between captains and umps etc. In contrast Healy seems to miss a lot of the obvious and persisted in calling Johan van der Wath Joanne Volkswagen. He's hopeless at the trivia quizzes too.

These series are worth very little from a cricket perspective. They might be good for ratings and crowds but in reality, they no longer hold a predominant place in world cricket. However, Cricket Australia has something to do with that - by elevating overseas series to a greater importance than local series (by refusing to rest players for overseas one day tours but "rotating them during the Aussie summers).

Surely it is more use to rest from an overseas tour - let's start by resting McGrath, Gilly and Punter from the up-coming one-dayers in South Africa.

I'll also say that Ian Chappell is the worst exponent of the "In my day..." style of commentary. For a guy who was so into player welfare in his day, he's particularly dismissive of those sort of issues for today's cricketers.

In terms of welfare Chappell thought his own players grossly underpaid but would always back them to the hilt. In his day players balanced cricket with a job. Perhaps he feels in these days of professionalism and extremely high wages they should be out there playing. Steve Waugh seems to agree.

They could be playing their best side and still be preparing for the world cup.
What good is it playing Hodge over Jaques?
One of them bats at #3 the other is an opener. Given the #3 batsman (Ponting) is being rested, it is best to pick a #3 batsman to replace him. Bearing in mind that when Katich was unavailable to play last week, Jaques replaced him. Horses for courses.

It is still a player welfare issue - this time its not financial and maybe that's why Ian Chappell is not supportive....

Ian Chappell did wonderful things for player welfare in his day - now it is not a responsibility of a captain so much as it is a responsibility of a players' association and Cricket Australia as an employer. Both organisations are concerned about player workload. It is the player welfare issue of the day and Chappell takes the same approach today that he hated when Bradman and others criticised his players for seeking a fair wage for work. As I said, it is the "In my day" approach - as in "It was good enough in my day"....

Dont give me this 'player welfare' rubbish. Ponting would have had Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to rest. Why would you need more than three days to rest after scoring ~13 runs on Sunday??

I would consider it rubbish too except that it is obviously a concern of both the players' representative body and the players' employer. There might be a little bit in this "player welfare rubbish".

And it's not like they train at all or have other commitments....
