Everyone thinks the R23 bye is a great idea leading into the finals (including me). But something needs to happen in this week to not lose any momentum coming up to the first week of the finals.

Could a Victoria V Allies one off game on saturday night be an option?
Of course it would be made up entirely of the bottom 10 teams so it's technically not the best of the best, but I think it would still be a great spectacle, and even keep fans of these bottom 10 teams interested in the footy!

For example the teams from last years bottom 10 could look something like this:
(excluding all of the post-season surgeries)

VICTORIA
B: H. SHAW T. MCDONALD S. DEMPSTER
HB: B. GODDARD M. HURLEY D. HEPPELL
C: D. SHIEL J. SELWOOD T. BOAK
HF: R. GRAY T. CLOKE S SIDEBOTTOM
F: J. ELLIOT J. CAMERON D SWAN
R: S. MARTIN S. PENDLEBURY G. ABLETT
I: M. MURPHY T. ROCKLIFF J. STEVEN C. WARD

ALLIES
B: C. ENRIGHT C. HOOKER J. PATFULL
HB: D. RICH H. TAYLOR B. GIBBS
C: H. HARTLETT M. DUNCAN B. VINCE
HF: C. WINGARD N. RIEWOLDT S. MOTLOP
F: D. ZORKO T. HAWKINS J. HOGAN
R: P. RYDER D. ARMITAGE D. BEAMS
I: B. EBERT P. DAVIS B. GRUNDY J. HARBROW

Just a roughie so i'm sure I've made a few blunders!
personally i'm not a fan of the bye before finals but seeing were having one this sounds like the best idea i've heard so far. two pretty good sides as well.

Interesting concept. Could have it at the MCG, or swap it between MCG and AO/Domain Stadium every year.

Certainly makes the bye interesting.
Those sides are pretty good in quality.

I thought the same thing when I heard about the bye weekend.

Perhaps an OHS risk, but for the novelty factor, what about combined teams of the best non top 8 teams and the best up and coming draft prospects? Could still stick to the Vics Vs Allies. Play 24 on a team, 14 AFL + 10 up and comers.

The NBA have a 1st years Vs 2nd years game correct? That would be great to see IMO.

18/19 year olds Vs 19/20 year olds.

Posted in the other thread better suited here.

Rookies vs Sophomores

The young promising stars would be more enthusiastic about playing in an all star game than the more blooded veterans who will complain about an itchy pinky toe to get out of playing in an exhibition game.

Posted in another thread, what about hybrid teams of the best young talent + the non 8 all stars. 24 on a side.

Victoria
10 best draft prospects + 14 best available AFL players from the teams that didn't make the 8.

Allies
10 best draft prospects + 14 best available AFL players from the teams that didn't make the 8.

Each team must have at least 7 of the draft prospects on the field at all times. (injury permitting)

Or is the idea of having 17/18 year olds running around with grown men too big of a risk?

Turn it into a grassroots/community round.

Wednesday night: All Australian night - televised as normal
Thursday night: The U18 Prospects V Mature age prospects (VFL, SANFL, WAFL, NEAFL mature aged players not playing finals but in the draft frame).
Friday night: Indigenous team V Country Football all stars team
Saturday night: reframed Legends match with players only 1-3 years out of the game.

Have all 3 games at Etihad, donation for charity to enter and try and fill the place up with people who rarely get to go games.
Set up the concourse area over the 3-4 days with stalls selling the merch of participating finals team, have face painting, player signings etc etc.
Show some games on Foxtel and others on FTA secondary channels. Try and get a womens game in there too, possibly the GF if the comp is up and running.

Hmmm don't mind the U18 v State players
But I think separate them
Have an U18 game: eg Vics v Allies
Then have a WAFL v VFL game, or SANFL v VFL game (they do that every year anyway don't they)

How about this. 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th vs 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th. 25 vs 25. Five players from each side. The five senior coaches from each team would be the coaching panel. Use this year's ladder as an example:

Odds: Hinkley (forward), Cameron (midfield), Roos (head), Worsfold (senior assistant), Leppitsch (defence) as one panel.

Evens: Scott (defence), Buckley (midfield), Richardson (senior assistant), Eade (head), Bolton (forward) as the other.

Odds:

Jetta - Hooker - Hombsch
Shaw - Hurley - Hartlett
Boak - Watson - Shiel
Beams - Hogan - R Gray
Daniher - Cameron - Zorko
Mumford - Heppell - Rockliff
Ward - Taylor - Wines - Jones - Vince - Viney - Rich

Evens:

Jamison - Lonergan - Williams
Tuohy - Taylor - Harbrow
Swan - Pendlebury - Riewoldt
Sidebottom - Cloke - Murphy
Lynch - Hawkins - Ablett
Longer - Selwood - Steven
Gibbs - Simpson - Mackie - Swallow - Miller - Armitage - Montagna

I didn't put players traded in this year deliberately.

Why not have 2 wild card spots for the finals on these weekends.
9th vs 12th.
10th vs 11th.

Though you would have to modify the finals series in some way.
(Tis the silly season).

The fixture each year has a very similar feel with a few changes.

They must have a template and then randomise the non-fixed games.

Similar to the tennis draws with the 32 seeds already fixed, and then randomising everyone else.

Just pencil in the hawks for the granny and work around the rest
