AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
It doesn't matter, i still have the invite to train at Essendon under 19's, but alas i was too small and a broken wrist didn't help much.
Never thought for a second about my allegiance to Geelong at the time, i was thrilled to be even noticed. I doubt kids today care all that much, they just want to be drafted, if they go interstate they might be able to work their way back to a club of choice if they want. Judd barracked for Melbourne as a kid and i know the Demons were in the mix, but ended up at Carlton. Danger is an exception because he really does live in the sticks...Overall with the possibility of 500k a year contracts staring you in the face if you're any good, your allegiance to a club probably doesn't enter into it.
There have been some big name players who barracked for other teams when kids. Peter Mckenna was an Essendon man, so was Don Scott, Kevin Bartlett barracked for the Dogs and has acknowledged on his radio show that he still has a soft spot for them. Bruce Doull and Wayne Jonston barracked for Geelong and Kevin Sheedy was a Bombers man before he played for the Tigers. Ron Barassi is a Demons man, he may have coached the Blues, Roos, and Swans, but the Demons scarf is always on these days!
There would be heaps playing today at clubs they didn't grow up barracking for...
Is greenwood popular at Collingwood? Because that's why he left north. Was 6-7th in the pecking order .You might not be real popular in the rooms with that attitude though
Fair enough,Is greenwood popular at Collingwood? Because that's why he left north. Was 6-7th in the pecking order .
Too old nowadays, the Bombers were very good to the EDFL players back in those days, i think maybe 7 or 8 of us got an invitation from our club. They went out all over the place to the under 17 teams. Local area kids, most of them all barracked for Essendon except me!You should rock up to Tulla with your gym bag and the letter
This would be a more valid point for me as well. But I am sure that there are examples where talented footballers don't nominate for the draft as they don't want to have to move from their home state.
Mine was lack of footballing ability, other than that could of made it.Inb4 this thread turns in to 'could have played AFL if I worked a bit harder and had more luck'.
Gold Coast. Best weather and can get away with a lot with not many people knowing who you are
Yeah, how shit would it be being drafted to Hawthorn and being coached by the best in the business.
Now you've just got follow up this blinkered viewpoint by posting in a game day thread that you're a 'nuetral' supporter.
Something to think about is this.
Kids grow up idolising their heroes and supporting their chooses team to the death. These talented kids though start playing serious rep footy at 15. From then on their so busy they would hardly actually watch the team they supported on telly or atleast less than the average Joe like ourselves. By the time u18 Tac, SANFL, wafl comes around they would just be mainly focused on making it onto any list. A lot of them have spend the last 4 years worried about themselves and the teams they play their afl teams might not seem so important. Then on draft day deep down they would be hoping for their childhood team. Just an opinion and I may have got lost half way through but does it make sense sort of
So your claiming the discipline, will and willingness to do whatever it taks then?Mine was lack of footballing ability, other than that could of made it.
Is greenwood popular at Collingwood? Because that's why he left north. Was 6-7th in the pecking order .
I would wanna play for Richmond, Essendon or Collingwood . Easy to get a game there.
We have a no dickhead policy at our clubYeah. Well I'm over 30. North would snap me up.
