I think this is the only way I can deal with the pain and emptiness, time to look forward...

Firstly I think the coaching group were first rate and should be kept together at all costs. Footy cap restricts us from making further improvements.

Mason Cox - he has started to clunk marks as we all knew he could, expect that to improve further over the preseason and expect his aerobic capacity to improve as well as his ruck craft. He will be even bigger in 2019.

Brayden Sier- now knows what it takes to play senior football and expect him to work harder over the preseason so that he has the capacity to play 4 quarters and work better in transition. Wills could partner him on ball...

Darcy Moore - I think he is staying, and I look forward to him building some strength and agility into his limbs now that they are fully grown at 22 years of age. He was the missing piece yesterday. If he leaves we should get May in return.

Jamie Elliott - needs to get fit or we move him on. We desperately need another quality small to allow Jordy to have more midfield rotations. I really like the idea of getting Kelly in 2020, his polish is what we lack...or could it be Daicos...Kirby.

Scott Pendlebury - I want to see him getting more outside ball, average 30 possessions, when the ball is in his hands things happen. Even his shanked kick yesterday resulted in a goal!

I hope we finally get our injuries down, I can’t help but think it’s to do with the break neck speed and way we play the game. We need to use our depth to rest players strategically and proactively rather than waiting for them to break down. Bring in Wills, Mclarty, Brown, Daicos, Broomhead, Murphy... for stints.

The 17 players that hadn’t played a final now have, that is huge and cannot be understated. They will reflect on why they came up short and be better for it come next year. Crisp really should have pumped that ball back in boundary side rather than switching to Sidey...we lost the game retreating...that’s me dwelling, can’t stop!

Some fair treatment from the footy gods and the umpires would be nice too, Eddy get to work!

I’d like to see Collingwood supporters stand by their team no matter what, side by side.

Ultimately all the pieces are there, we just have to make it work. Floreat pica

Internally it’s obvious:

continued better play of De Goey, Grundy, Treloar, Adams, all must continue.

The emergence of Sier will be telling. Yes we do the whole bear thing, but that’s just fun for us. But this player is a missing piece; will be something.
Good driver in heavy traffic.

Want to see Murphy now given the opportunity as I’m calling it, will be a player.

The general types Crisp, Langdon, Howe, Maynard, Hoskin-Elliott all May they continue.

Injuries we need somehow to get less of them. I don’t care how much I say it but Scharenberg and Dunn being injured really hurt us.
Elliott is a huge ongoing hurt because he’s elite levels for position when hurt.
Wells would have been cream yesterday but that’s all wishful thinking.

Keep the comraderie going! Do not stop believing.

Must keep Moore - we have this tall athletic guy who is a difference maker. Keep him, pay him, get him right. Reap the rewards.

Externally:

Bring in best 22 talent if we can especially a key forward type.

Look to trade smartly with agression but repeat smartly.

Finally do NOT panic.
Work hard, and work more.
And do NOT panic.

Maybe we revisit Tom Lynch?

Try that one more time?

Just thinking aloud.

I’d spend the summer teaching Mason Cox new techniques to mark the ball when defenders are body-on-body or in his way. Imagine when he does that? He will be unstoppable.

I’d get support up forward because they need another tall at least because if Cox or Mihocek go down, or even just to stretch some teams defences. Keeping in mind our defence is fine with Will Kelly and Isaac Quaynor coming in.

I know this might seem strange, but I’d love to have another outside mid. Now whether that comes from Wells not being injured, Aish’s improvement, or brining someone in through FA/draft, just having a nice kick who can deliver the call perfectly inside 50 would be fantastic.

I think we need another running defender to break lines or small defender that frees up Maynard. Ones that don’t shit there pants before they kick.

Find a new role Pendlebury and allow De Goey and Sier more midfield time.

Return Moore to CHF and McLarty to fullback.

B: Jeremy Howe ~ Sam McLarty ~ Brayden Maynard
HB: Scott Pendlebury ~ Tom Langdon ~ Jack Crisp

M: Will Hoskin-Elliott ~ Taylor Adams ~ Steele Sidebottom
R: Brodie Grundy ~ Jordan De Goey ~ Adam Treloar

HF: Travis Varcoe ~ Darcy Moore ~ Jayden Stephenson
F: Brodie Mihocek ~ Mason Cox ~ Jamie Elliott

I/C: Brayden Sier ~ Josh Thomas ~ Tom Murphy ~ Tom Phillips

Who would you consider from rival clubs that are on the fringe or are realistically gettable as an outside mid? I hope phlippa can have a similar output to his purple patch in the early-middle part of the season and that's one of our wings sorted.

It’s time for McLarty.
Cox appears to be THE MAN up forward. If that’s the case, throw Trav Cloke a bit of the stuff that folds (he loves the stuff) to teach him about contested marking. Also, Anthony Rocca, surely to God can work on his kicking. In order to be truly lethal, Cox needs to be able to kick 50. Otherwise, his opposition will happily let him mark from 30+ metres out...
Stewart Lowe and Nick Riewoldt both improved their kicking enormously.

More key positional depth so we cover a long term injury like Dunn's better and don't go into games undersized.

And draft another outside runner so there is competition for spots amongst Thomas, WHE, Stephenson.

Otherwise the pieces are mostly there

If we are to improve, Greenwood shouldn’t be an automatic starter. Nor should Mihocek. And while Phillips is great defensively as the outlet due to hit running he shouldn’t be an automatic starter either.
Pendles should put his hand up and play on the half back or half forward flank.
And I agree Murphy needs to play round 1.

Basic improvement 101:

Trade out the injury prone clogs on our list!

One of the consequences of building a tight-knit culture is that we hang onto injured players way too long. Ben Reid should've been gone years ago, now he has zero trade currency. Jamie Elliott is losing trade value by the day.

Agree.

Goldsack and Mihocek are both battlers at best. They need to be replaced in best 22. Mihocek is fine to keep as depth player, nothing more.

Yeah, Mihocek a battler who has never played forward before in his life and kicked 28.17 this year

Agree with Mason and the bear, I'm not so optimistic of the other 3. Jamie and Darcy just can't their bodies holding up to the rigors of the top level they and continually fall over when it's asked of them - if they were to come good they would've by now and they'd have been selected in the 22 for 9 out of 10 weeks already.

Scott Pendlebury is an irreplaceable and the bulk of the industry would have him as one of the goat, right now it is tick tock though as he is 30. Yes he had a stellar year and made the AA 40 but how long can he continue the week in week out exceptionalism? His work is the stuff out of the realms of mere mortals but it can't continue forever and I fear Sco may have missed his last chance. Yeah he is a walk up 22 start in most clubs but in ours being a mid he has some serious competition for spots.

Apart from our deficiencies in defence. In 2019 we need a kick in strategy. Too often we get locked in trying to get the ball out from our goal square. Yesterday was embarrassing when we continually kept kicking wide to WC numbers, over and over. I know it was late in the game and we were spent but it created multiple rebounds that are eventually going to wear you down and hurt you on the score board. Yet WC (and other good teams) release with ease from theirs.

Agree. Especially last Qtr where everyone knew where it was Going

Mihocek isn't an automatic starter, he is a depth player thats been called upon and dona good job.
Can Pendles take Greenwoods role?
He did a good job tagging Cripps early in the year.

1) KPP

We need a viable key forward and back on the park. Talls matter in finals. We ignored that at our cost.

2) Rejig the midfield

I fear Pendles time is passing. He needs a new role, and we need some slight tweaks in there to accommodate. I would pencil Pendles in down back.

3) Keep our players on the field.

Our injury recovery is the worst in the league. This just has to change.

Fix 3) and it goes a long way to assisting 1) and 2). I don't think huge on field personnel changes are required. Off field, in the high performance section an axe, a large pit and a pallet of quicklime are needed.

Two key position players is basically what we need. And a genuine crumber to stand at the feet of Cox would be handy as well. But when you lose a grand final by less than a kick, you're really not that far off,you just need to address your weaknesses.

I think he can. Will be more damaging than Greenwood with his foot skills, and the opposition player he tags should have that in mind, which could give a further mental edge in the tag.

Patton or J.Cameron perhaps? think we have missed Lynch.
Yes with you’d think General Patton is a bit cheaper these days.
Cameron absolutely
