in and outs for the saints game?

Tough selection this week there is a batch of players in the mix of ins & outs so thought I would go thru each case:

Forwards (Need to find the right mix):
Rocca - A bit of a Brett Lee decision, is he fit, does he still have it, massive risk. The safe decision is not to play him, but he does bring x-factor. The Saints game plan has been exposed in the last 3 weeks by very quick movement of the ball forward to catch out their zones, Rocca could be the recipient of this movement with lots of 1 on 1 contests that he thrives on. Tempting but I say no - unless he fits a specific game plan.

Dick - Must play unless he is a bit sore. On the 'G hopefully in sunshine he is quick & dangerous. Yes he is not big bodied, but we need these sorts of guys to break St Kilda open with run & carry.

Medhurst - Struggling big time. I find it hard to pick him on form, there is something missing from his game & I can only put it down to a lack of desperation. Is he worth the punt that he will come good in a big game - he does thrive on big games. I am leaning towards no - St K will not let him have any space and have good match ups for him.

Dawes - I like him, think he will be part of our future forward line. However, to much of an ask at this stage against the best backline in the league. A good back up for Cloke - who is extremely frustrating and simply must stand up for us. Injuries happen though and Dawes will be 1st in line for CHF.

Mids (Not much room):
McCarthy - Great kid. Will be in our starting 22 next year. Has the intensity for finals footy. Someone must go out for Pendles though & cannot see McCarthy playing back or forward that effectively. Hard to see him come up after that knock. Possibly a replacement for a tired Beams.

Beams - Is tiring as happens with kids. Time for fresh legs? Ideally we want to keep him in as he is as hard at it as anyone. Up to the coaches to decide if he is running on empty - if so maybe McCarthy?

Sidebottom - Can't do much more than he has been in the VFL, can play forward & possibly run off half back. Hard to ignore but I think could be hunting Wellingham's position.

Wellingham - May be a bit suspect in the heat of a final. He does provide good run & carry which is what we need against the Saints. Decision making though is often poor under pressure and no more pressure than this week.

Backs:
N Brown - Big body who will have a job to do on possibly Kosi. Could not have him on Riewolt. Unsure of his VFL form though.

L Brown - A real utility player now who I am sure will be brought in as an insurance player in case things go bad down back, forward or ruck. Ideally you would say we don't need him & play an extra midfielder, but MM is conservative & needs a contingency plan which is often L. Brown.

Goldsack - Thought he was great against doggies & does well every time he plays, but hard to find a match up for him. May be the unlucky one cut for LB.

Toovey - Has dropped off a little, was beaten against the Dogs, seemed lost. Unless MM has a stopping job lined up for him we cannot really keep him in when what is needed is offensive runners & good ball use. Is he the man for Milne? He is as big a danger as Riewolt in my opinion. Harry O has taken him in the past but we may need to free Harry up for Riewolt or just to run which means someone like Toovey has to stop Milne or even Schneider.

Reid - Suggested as a Riewolt match up. I cannot see this happening, next year for him.

Clarke - He would be hungry & is in form. Gives us good run & delivery, precisely whats needed against the Saints. For mine we seriously need to consider him.

Johnson - Johno has been serviceable, but he will not give us any sort of edge to win the game. He is not a stopper and he is not a great user of the ball -what will he do to advance our chances of winning?

My Suggestions
Out
Medhurst
Wellingham
Goldsack
Johnson

In
Sidebottom
Pendles
L Brown
Clarke

If McCarthy or Beams are not right we have Wellingham to jump straight back in.

Don't shoot the Sheriff, he shouldn't be expected to hold down a full-time midfield spot as he was yesterday.

OUT: McCarthy (get a preseason under your belt, J-Mac, and see you in 2010), Goldsack (team balance), Dick
IN: Pendlebury (no-brainer), L Brown (team balance), Sidebottom

My only concern is the amount of speed we're losing here, but we don't have another small forward option and Dick is sadly out of form. Saints have two talls so we need L Brown in for Goldy to play on Kosi.

Agree here 100%.
Although I don't think the way we set-up yesterday did anyone any favours.
I don't really understand what was going to be achieved playing completely outside our normal game plan.
It looked like both sides were tentative in attack.
The mids were as relaxed as I've seen on end of year trips away?

It's funny how varied our opinions can be, I thought Toovey was our best and McCarthy struggled with adjusting to the pace of AFL.

In - Pendlebury, N Brown/Reid
Out - McCarthy, someone else

Cannot afford to drop Medhurst.

He is all class, despite a limited and injury-interrupted pre-season.

Big stage has arrived and we have many players who can thrive, him being one of them.

I also wouldn't drop Dick. Defensive pressure, particularly in the Saints' backline is pivotal. I also don't think they have a really good small defender that can go with him at ground level. We know what he is capable of despite his skinny frame. He was part of a dysfunctional forward line that was terribly burnt by our style or lack of against the WB. Dick is one that will relish the big occassion and can provide the spark a team needs.

J-Mac should go out. A great prospect but clearly underdone in terms of AFL tempo. Pendles automatic inclusion.

Apart from that I think only 3 other players are in consideration for a recall. Nathan Brown (replicate his job on Kosi earlier in the season), Clarke (encouraging VFL form and a good finals footy contributor in previous seasons) and Sidebottom (red-hot VFL form). However, you can bet Leroy Brown is in the mix too ( I have nightmares of him lining up now Kosi).

you can not play reid when his onley played 1 senior game all year thats stupid nathen brown or leigh brown will come in.

Reid would definitely provide us with an option if Presti is run out of the 50 which he undoubtedly will be by Reiwoldt. We know everyone else in the defensive 50 has had a crack at Reiwoldt and been beaten. Still, stick with the devil you know and that has not worked. Good point.

Didn't you start a thread demanding we bring in Rocca?? Do you see the irony here??

I like those INs and OUTs. Bringing in Reid would be a massive call and a massive gamble but he is probably our best on paper match up for Reiwoldt. I'd have faith in him to do the job.

J-Macs fitness would have to be a concern too. We can't carry some one who can't carry their weight in the finals so maybe Sidebottom is a chance here. Although Shawthings suggestion of Sidebottom for Dick with McCathy in the forward line would be a good idea. I'd like to see the Sidebottom tackling machine in action against the Saints - midfield pressure will just be so important to us against the Saints.

reiwoldt has a knee problem anyways nathen brown could take him

Reids an interesting one he would go close to winning the VFL best and fairest from CHB this year, but I am not sure the club want to risk breaking his confidence against a Reivwoldt if he was brought in then again it could be the making of him.

I am sure he will be a starting 22 player next season.

Team I'd like to see in 2010/2011.

FB: Goldsack , N.Brown, H.Shaw
HBF: Maxwell, Reid, O'brien
C: Didak, Pendles, Davis
HFF: Medhurst, Cloke, Thomas
FF: J.Anthony, Rusling, Dick
R: Wood, Swan, Sidebottom
I: Fraser, Beams, Dawes, Clarke

Emer: Lockyer, Blight, McCarthy, Toovey, Presti

Alot of the bad disposer's gone, phasing out some of the older players in Presti, Lockyer and O'bree (VFL- in and out of the seniors).

Rusling in on the proviso he is finaly injury free, otherwise Dawes at FF and J.McCarthy on bench.

Hopefully the developement of the ins push's said players out.

He was shit yesterday. We need all our players at thei best if we want to get very far in this finals series. I wouldnt be dropping him but he needs a better game next week or he may find himslef out of the team.

I agree with you full stop.

My point was, people say he is tiring, he's not tiring, he just had an off day. One off day does not equate to someone struggling to run the season out, especially when his previous two games were BOG's!

Nathan Brown hasn't had a very good history on Reiwoldt. And Nath Brown has had a knee issue too. If Nath was to play i'd like to see him on Kosi with Presti on Reiwoldt. As it is I think Reid could be the best match up for Reiwoldt as he would be the most comfortable at following him up to the wings - wheras the Browns and Presti would be out of their comfort zones.

I was thinking about this the other day. Not sure we'll see the backs of Presti, Lockyer and O'Bree - who's experience I think will be invaluable at a premiership shake. I'd like to see this:

HB: -------Blight-------Reid---------Clarke------

C: --------Didak-------Swan--------Davis-------
Fol: ------Wood-------Pendles----Sidebottom----

HF: ------Thomas------Cloke-------Medhurst----

Not sure Rocca will be around in 2010/11, nor Presti (2011 anyway) for that matter
