Re: First Captain

If true, I like those appointments.

Power is the most experienced player on the team with 282 games and three flags, while Ward is the most experienced of the young guys and (to me) comes across as a leader. Good mix.

It'll be interesting to see how they go throughout the inaugural season...

Re: First Captain

Sounds like the thread should be called first captains ;)
Here is an article on the possibility of Ward and Power being joint Captains

THE AFL's newest club looks certain to settle upon co-captains, with Luke Power and Callan Ward the outstanding favourites to become Greater Western Sydney's first on-field leaders.

Also here is another article suggesting that GWS will also appoint Phil Davis to be the third captain, which would make alot of sense as he is alot more at ease with the media then Ward is.

GUN Greater Western Sydney recruit Phil Davis has emerged as a candidate to be a third member of the Giants historic first captaincy team.

Re: First Captain

GREATER Western Sydney's first captain will be announced before its NAB Cup debut on Saturday week.
Also to be revealed in the same time frame will be the club's theme song.
Veteran Luke Power and 21-year-old Callan Ward have been tipped to be named as inaugural skippers and Giants' chief executive David Matthews said the co-captaincy model "has appeal".
"It does because it spreads the load and it also allows us to look at the development of the leaders over time," Matthews said.
Matthews said the Giants were aiming to secure 17,000 members.

Re: First Captain

Good compo imo.

Ward will gain valuable experience from feeding off Power. We all know at times the scoreboard will be nasty and it is better a short term player such as Power deals with these times, as opposed to Ward.

Davis was being groomed as a future Crows leader/Captain.

Re: First Captain

They had a team photo shoot today, apparently Ward and Davis were next to Sheedy (there's video footage somewhere) - make of that what you will...

Re: First Captain

Have to agree with the Power/Davis/Ward co-captain model.
When Power hangs up the boots, leaves a space for a '12 UCT to take his place and create a smooth transition, whilst keeping the long term picture firmly in view. :thumbsu:

Re: First Captain

Definitely happening, heard it from multiple sources.

My tip is Power with Ward deputising or co-captaining

Re: First Captain

Just been announced:

The GIANTS have unveiled their player leadership group for the club's historic first season in the AFL competition in 2012.

Chairman Tony Shepherd announced the GIANTS had appointed three co-captains – Luke Power, Callan Ward and Phil Davis – to lead the club during 2012.

They will be supported in the player leadership group by Tom Scully, Rhys Palmer, Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan and Setanta O'hAilpin.

Shepherd said the GIANTS were in a unique position of building a young team for the future and its player leadership group reflected the club's mix of youth and experience.

"We think these players will provide first class leadership and support for the club both on and off the field as we build a team that can compete for ultimate success in the years to come," he said. "In particular I want to congratulate Luke, Callan and Phil on becoming the inaugural captains of the GWS GIANTS."
