Injuries....Bad luck or something else?

Extremely good kick, Claye.

He'll be back and when he gets his body right and he has a few years at AFL level, he'll be like this "hidden gem" that nobody in Victoria knew about.

Poor Claye:cry: Hang in there mate, we'll still be here waiting for your return.:thumbsu:

....and a perfect example of our players being brought back in too soon. Pearce playing this week. It was going to be after the bye.

If anything happens to him, I think I'll go troppo!

Is it not fairly common knowledge that rest is preferable, when possible, to not resting - if you are healing from broken bones?

Did the X-rays show he was healed?, I didn't see that stated anywhere? I also don't believe the pain was ever under control, he said he was struggling through pain.

How is the Nigel Lappin case relevant here, 1 rib vs 3 ribs, round 3 bottom of the ladder vs AFL Grand Final? Punctured lung vs No punctured lung? reinjury vs no re-injury.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: awesome post.

I was happy to see him back at the time - just unfortunately now, given hindsight, IMO the the 4-5 week rest minimum would have been the better option.

Ask 10 people if resting is better for healing than not resting, we both know what the answer will be. I actually thought you were being a smartass by stating something so obvious.

Why does it have to be stated anywhere, these are professional organisations so it's safe to assume they would follow protocol. An X-ray would have been done and a Doctor would have to ok his ribs otherwise medical negligence has occurred and that's the last thing anyone wants a reputation of having let alone opening yourself up to being sued. The only way around it is if Rocky signs something to say that he is going against medical advice and has been given the education on the risks if he re-injures his ribs. Of course he struggled but if the pain wasn't under control he wouldn't have played, he averaged 22 disposals since coming back so he was adding to the team more than he was taking up someone else's spot.

I don't see how it's not relevant, it is a similar injury, different severity. Re-injury vs no re-injury, If a rib is already broken, you're not going to re-injure it are you?

Have a feeling all will be ok.

We will have enough for a team.

Love that this is an accurate description of where we're at

It is. what it is.

Can't change anything.

If 2 weeks is safe and reasonable and the re-break was just simply bad luck, why are the docs now resting him for the prescribed 6 week period this time around? Because it is clearly the safer option, and they can't 'risk' it happening again. I mean - if the quick return is totally safe and it had nothing to do with it, why not just rush him back again?

TBH - we could go around in circles on this all day, we had already thrashed this debate to bits. If you had read the way the convo unfolded we decided both parties had reasonable points and there wasn't much left to say. It was kinder over.

Honestly I don't think there is a wise answer to this debate - which usually means both sides are valid.

Often when an issue befalls the club I notice the question around an individual persons skills or competence raised - coaches are a good example, and this current injury curse is much the same with blame being thrown at Burton by some in this thread.

In these kinds of contexts I often rememeber the Fundamental Attribution Error, which is basically the human predisposition to attribute somebody's behaviour (or performance) on that person's individual characteristics rather than also taking into account context and external or environmental factors.

Burton's individual competence may well in fact be influencing fitness levels and by extension injuries as well, but any number of other factors may also be influencing the fitness outcomes of Lions players, for example:

- Adherence of the players to their fitness regimen, diet plan and in some access rehab
- Player buy-in
- Facilities
- Similarly, money

In addition to any number of factors within the club that we simply don't have access to in order to understand. By all means criticize the number of injuries, it is unacceptable even given the number of non-fitness related freak injuries (ribs, fingers, concussion, back), but the blame is a hard thing to pin.

The most galling thing about it is that this year we were all hoping for a better run with injuries than last year. Instead it has been an annus horribilis. I don't think I've ever focussed on the draft so early in a season.
