Insomnia and Getting to sleep

Lay off the p1ss!

Alcohol disrupts sleep patterns.

If i have a big weekend, i will have a sleeping pill on Sunday night around 7:30 and go off to sleep when the pill kicks in.

Well that ain't going to happen in the foreseeable future :p

I don't have insomnia but there are times where I just CAN'T go to sleep and since I have to wake up at 6:30AM every morning it's crucial that I have sleep.

Last night for example, I think I had about 3 hours of sleep in total - Work was horrible I don't know how I got through the day. This happens to me once everyweek (usually on Sunday nights) without fail.

Does anyone have any tips to remedy the problem (without resorting to sleeping pills)

i HAVE an idea. Go to sleep in the opposite position you normally sleep in.

To illustrate my point, last night I had a few beers while watching TV. I struggled to get to sleep after lying down at 10:30. i was awake at 5:30am.

Two nights ago I didn't drink. I went to bed at 10:30, fell straight to sleep and got woken up by the alarm at 6:25am.

Have 10 beers, not just a few. You shouldn't have a problem.

I have a rotten night every few weeks. Often it's a Sunday regardless of what I did on the weekend. I think it has something to do with switching to work mode for Monday. Sometimes I have trouble getting to sleep, however my biggest problem is I tend to wake at 3.00am or so and take over an hour to get to sleep again.

Learning how to properly relax yourself and clear your mind is helpful but doesn't always work. It's likely that (short of medication knocking you out) nothing is failsafe. If I can't stop stuff running through my brain, I get up and make some notes, and sometimes watch a bit of telly wich helps stop the thought process. Writing things down seems to help get them off my mind. Will sometimes try reading. however if I start reading I usually end up continuing all night, or until the book ends, whichever happens first.

None of this worked for me last night, and I fell asleep at about 5am. Alarm woke me at 6.15 :(

I think a full moon affects my sleep patterns, although I've never researched if this is valid

Temperature does it for me. The last few nights its got down to 15 or so, which is perfect for sleeping in just boxers with a doona, maybe the feet hanging out if its a bit warm. But when the conditions are perfect you get woken up by garbos or by neighbours starting their cars. :p

When its 18-19 its a bit in between... a bit cool without a doona, a bit too hot with one.

The sticky 22s and above we've had in Melbourne for most of the last month are hopefully gone. Have barely had a decent night's sleep in 4-5 months.

Looking forward to the 5 degree nights in winter... so much easier to keep warm than to keep cool.

You have got to be (*&#@&#^!~#)^#ing me!

When I was last down there (Jan this year) they were telling me it a 25 degree min. I had 2 doonas on and was still bloody cold! There is no )(!@#)(ing way it was 25 degrees! Then they told me it was 35 during the day. Bull****!

You lot need to buy new thermometers. The ones you have are busted.

I routinely go to bed around 12, turn the radio onto SEN and after about 30-40 mins I start getting drowsy and just fall asleep...I've heard people say that sound disrupts your sleep though so I wouldn't recommend listening to anything before bed but it works for me...maybe it gives me something to think about while I'm sleeping.

I find I sleep better when the room is cool as well.

Well I'm currently awake- not because I'm an insomniac but because I'm the doc working in the ER of one of Victoria's regional centres. I don't want to jinx myself but it's a rather peaceful night, so I thought I'd put my 2 cents in about sleep...

Nightshifts are a pain in the backside when it comes to sleeping patterns. Anyone else have troubles with them? I find that when I work a 10.30pm to 8.30am shift, if I get home to bed before 9.30am and take half a xanex then I can sleep through to 4.30- 5pm. That dose isn't enough to make me drowsy, it's just enough to settle me so that I feel relaxed enough to just lie down and chill.

I find the most important things for me when I'm doing normal shifts are:
1. Not stressing about it. Just lie down and relax, don't worry about going to sleep. Enjoy lying in bed rather than busting your gut at work.
2. Ease up on the waters a couple of hours before bed.
3. Have a very light snack before bed.
4. Don't be messing around in bed before going to sleep- ie watching tv etc. Some of my patients laze around in bed all day dozing off and reading and then wonder why they can't sleep. It's because they aren't tired!!! Keep the bed for sleeping and the 'other stuff' only...
5. Make sure your tired- mentally and physically. Getting more active is a great way to make you more sleepy.
6. Don't go to bed too early or before you are tired. Some of my patients go to bed at 8pm and wonder why they wake up at 4am. There is nothing wrong with getting to bed at 10.30-11pm if that's when you feel sleepy. And remember, not everyone needs 8hrs a night. I'm generally a 6.5 to 7hr person and I function fine.
7. Stress and anxiety is another big issue with keeping people up. So chill out people. Fix the stress and you'll probable get a better night!!

Finally, I don't recommend pills. Yes I take a half xanex, but only when I'm doing nights and that's because if don't sleep then I'm a liability. No-one should have to rely on them as a long term measure because they can be addicitve and cause more problems than they solve.

Haven't tried talk-based radio, but instrumental CDs are a good bet.

My theory based on MANY years of odd hours, breathing difficulties, stress overload, noisy neighbours and being a VERY light sleeper, is that a constant level of sound is a good thing.

An instrumental CD without too many fluctuations, will drown out the trees being blown around in the wind, the traffic going past, the neighbours rooting, yet not wake you up with any spikes in the sound level..... (like wind gusts, garbos, trucks tend to do).

I usually find that I'll lie down with the CD at a certain volume, then after 2-3 minutes of adjusting to the relative silence, will turn it down a fraction again, and then she'll be apples.

My problem personally isn't getting to sleep at first, but waking up at 2-3-4am, and getting back to sleep..but not getting back to sleep 20 minutes before the set alarm. :p

Nup. Can honestly say I've never been kept awake by the cold, but until last week my only use for the doona was as a body pillow since about October. No tolerance for heat at all.

Even in June/July, for sleep it's boxers and sometimes a singlet, and one doona. If I've got someone sharing the cot it can still get too warm and I have to move a good two feet away.

melatonin works for me sometimes and Brauers Sleep and Insomina Relief works every now and then also. i try not to use them to often but after a few days in a row of rs sleep you give up - mind u i have been putting up with it for like 10+ years. if i can get 4 hours sleep i can get through the day anything less and ... yeah.

I'm a chronic insomniac. I've averaged 3-4 hours (at best) per night for the last 20 years. My body has learned to adapt to this, and I lead a 'normal' life. And in the last few years I've changed my lifestyle to make it easier for myself....
I found out about the 'sleep doctors'. I'm going to see them in a few weeks, their going to get me into their offices for a night and put terminals on me to track my sleep (or lack thereof) patterns. Could be quite interesting....

is that the good melatonin you get oversees or the weeker stuff you get here in aus, ive used both and found the oversees stuff just awesome, the last time i tried to get some to aus they told me it was illegal to bring into aus. geez please tell me i can buy it in aus now.

I use to get the melatonin from OS until the slapped the ban on it. Now i have to use the AUS formula which is fairly week so you end up popping 2-3 of them. I noticed about 2+ years ago that the OS formula is just as bad as ours now. I must say, when melatonin does work you do get a damm good sleep but i half suspect that my current issue of only sleeping for 4 hours a night has been partly created by many years of use of melatonin. I try only take it when i have successive nights of short sleep.

Holosync is more of a meditation aid but I sometimes use it when trying to sleep. You can get a demo for free, just fill in a form on the web site and they'll send it in the mail. There are (somewhat) similar types of CDs available... I've found some use from it.

Personally speaking music assists me to get to sleep... for some reason Damnation A.D.'s 'No More Dreams of Happy Endings' gets me to relax. :)
