On holidays at the moment & in process of painting the bathroom (trying rather), so in between coats i thought I'd share some stats that I have collated.

I have selected 2 competitive years (2002/03) & 2 disheartening years (2004/05). After researching their performance from a statistical perspective to analyze whether there were any correlations, I came up with some compelling figures. The first figure is our ranking out of the 16 clubs for 2002, 2nd figure for 2003 and so forth.

Take into consideration, in 2002/03 we played additional games, therefore figures may have varied slightly. Secondly, where teams averaged the same stat (very infrequent) the ranking was based alphabetically. For example in 2002 Brisbane & Collingwood averaged 39.4 contested possessions. Brisbane was ranked 9th & we were 10th.

Disposals - 13th, 10th, 11th & 10th

Kicks - 9th, 7th, 2nd & 4th - Surprising, yet pleasing stat for 2004/05.

Marks - 11th, 9th, 4th & 8th

Handballs - 15th, 10th & 15th, 10th - Not a handballing side, when compared to kicks which IMO is great.

Tackles - 4th, 7th, 10th & 14th - Validates that maybe the hardness was a little questionable in 2005.

Long kicks - 10th, 1st, 12th & 4th - You can draw parralels with long kicks & our rankings with goals scored. 2005 an exception.

Goals - 9th, 3rd, 13th & 16th - Clearly exhibits how sensational our defence was in 2002 to be ranked 9th in goals & nearly pinch the flag.

Behinds - 7th, 2nd, 5th & 3rd - A concerning statistic, an area that needs great attention. Carey can be the difference.

Hitouts - 15th, 15th, 16th & 16th - We desperately need Guy Richards this year.

Contested Marks 15th, 11th, 10th & 15th. I predict we will be ranked about 6th at the end of 2006, provided key players stay fit.

First possessions - 4th, 2nd, 13th & 16th - Almost identical to where we were placed on the ladder by the seasons end.

Clearances - 11th, 3rd, 9th & 15th - Let's hope Dale Thomas has an impact.

Inside 50's - 12th, 8th, 11th & 11th - Managed to get the ball in there in 04/05. Look at goal & point rankings.

Rebound 50's - 12th, 9th, 6th & 2nd - Further demonstrating how solid the defence was 04/05... yes, the ball went in their direction often enough.

Contested possessions - 10th, 11th, 14th & 16th. Lads must get their hands dirtier. 2004/05 stats are telling, looking at where we ended up.

Uncontested possessions - 15th, 10th, 12th & 8th

1 %ers - 4th, 4th, 11th & 14th - see contested possessions.

Errors - 10th, 9th, 7th & 11th - Cannot quite put my head around this stat

What has amazed me are the stats for 2002. Looking at the figures objectively, you wouldn't have conjectured we would be in a Grand Final. Incredible... a credit to the lads & Mick...

If anyone can come up with any of their own theories why certain figures seem a little obscure, feel free to comment...

Apologies if this has been done before, I searched without success...

Very Very Good stuff their Nebula.

As you mentioned, their are three main indications of a correlation between ladder position and stat ranking, and that is Tackles, First Possessions and 1%ers. Three important things that measure up success, so hopefully, Mick and co. have got this in their heads, and know this is the recipe needed, not necessarily the players, but the recipe.

Hitouts is a poor stat, but it is the same over the new millenium period, however, yes, there is the first possession stat that helped us in years 2002/03

Some great stats there, great work!!!! end of the day this is my theory, in 2002 and 2003 our main squad was available every week, week in and out. Therefore not giving the 3rd, 4th listed players a chance in the seniors. When he started to get hit with injuires in 04 and particully 05 it really exposed our lack of depth.

Forget Burns and Buckley we all know they only have a few seasons left as they are 32 and 34 respectivly.

Licca, clement, rocca, waiklin are all ageing no matter which way you look at it. I expect Davies, Didak, Johnson, Thomas, to re shape our midfield.

That is a an ordinary stat? What will Carey's job be exactly? I know he will concentrate with the forwards. Does anyone know whether that is the extent of his task?
