Yeah, I agree, they play a more expansive game.

And the crowds really make it stand out, some of them put the Soccer chants to shame.

We get what the Poms get except for the NL1 games, poor buggers get treated like crap, but it is changing, S L O W L Y ;)

Agreed. Eventually I hope they put at least one ESL game on free to air actually. As a neutral I rather watch the ESL as it is more expansive. Love watching a few players, Danny MacGuire especially. Really hope he plays NRL soon. Hope Brisbane buys him to replace Lockyer!

Didn't know that we get what the guys in the UK got. Thought there would be more games, but I guess it is just me wishing!

Yeah, they only get two SL games a week on Sky sports.

The TV rights come up again in Dec, this time Sky have some comp with Setanta(sp), so hopefully they get an increase in money and they can get a few more games.

The only reason they get an NL1 game a week live on Thurs is because another TV station tried to get them earlier in the year, when Sky found out, they fell over themselves to broadcast it :rolleyes:

The SL is the second biggest sport on UK pay TV behind the Soccer, but they don't get as much $$$$$ as other sports, things are about to change though. :thumbsu:

Great to hear. IMO for RL to prosper we need the ESL to prosper. Works both ways, increases the quality of play internaionally as well. And stars like Roby and McGuire will come to life. I hope the new deal gets more $$$$ and more games. The more games the better..only bad thing is the late nights, but I'd rather watch that than Union!

The good thing is so many teams out side the heartland wanting in, this is what will drive the money forward, CC from Wales has just been promoted to NL1, Toulouse from France want a team, Barcelona FC have been talking about putting a franchise into SL and a team from Italy want to get a SL club up n running.

Now that Sky have some comp, these things could happen, if you want the game, pay for the expansion :thumbsu:

Spot on and it will be a great thing to see in the future. Plus it will help these countries improve internationally if their players can play for a side in their homeland. Good times ahead for league..bad times (if they aren't bad enough for Union)..Lol..no hahah!

Lebanese Rugby League is proud to announce a landmark partnership with one of Lebanon’s premier banks, Bank of Beirut.

The three-year deal, with an option for a further two-years, is worth a significant six-figure sum, and will see the Lebanese league re-branded the ‘Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship’.

In addition to full competition naming rights, the Liban Espoir side will be known as the Bank of Beirut Espoirs, while the bank’s famous logo will also adorn the sleeves of the national team jersey for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Bank of Beirut connection gives Lebanese rugby league a further boost to cement the rapid advances made over the last few months, and builds on the firm foundations laid since 2002.

“Lebanese rugby league’s development model has been clear from the outset,” said LRLC vice president Danny Kazandjian. “We have been working on a policy of institutionalizing the sport within our partner universities, with the aim of making rugby league a part of their culture, before moving onto the public at large. This strategy has proved wonderfully successful, with a large number of Lebanese players, coaches and officials now, I’m proud to say, inveterate ‘leaguies’, as loyal supporters of the game as anyone in the traditional league-playing nations. This progressive partnership, with an institution the size and prestige of Bank of Beirut, is a reflection of the purely positive message embodied by Lebanese rugby league and together we will now be showcasing our sport to a nationwide audience. If our fine national team, the Cedars, can overcome the last two obstacles, namely Russia and Ireland, it will make 2007 a year to remember for Lebanese rugby league, and 2008 quite simply out of this world.”

The 2007-8 Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship will be covered by all ten marquee Lebanese newspapers, as well as two prominent radio stations and the country’s major television stations, sky-rocketing the exposure of the sport in the mass media.

The new season begins on November 10th, with the LRLC promising a further exciting announcement before the big kick off, and even more exciting news in the months ahead.

Ireland overcame an early scare to post an 11-try 58-18 win over Russia in a 2008 World Cup qualifier played in Carlow, Dublin.

The Irish are poised for a place in the Repechage final following a spirited fightback that produced spectacular open football. However. The opening period belonged to Russia.

After just eight minutes Russia led 10-0 and the Ireland coach Andy Kelly was looking to rub a four leaf clover.

He ultimately must have found one because Ireland hit their straps and leveled the scores after 20 minutes.

The Russians, Oleg Logunov and Valentin Baskakov had cut holes in the Irish defence but there was no denying the spit and polish of the Ireland recovery.

Damian Blanch and Sean Gleeson scored tries after wrong-fotting a tiring Russian defence but Russia re-gained the lead in the 21st minute when Artem Grigoryan landed a penalty goal.

Gleeson crossed for his second after skirting a flat-footed defence and right on halftime Bob Beswick went over for the first of his brace. Beswick has had a hand in both of Ireland's opening tries.

Russia raised a flutter of hope when Nikolay scored after anticipating a cross-kick from Grigoryan.

Stuart Littler soon put paid to any likely recovery from Russia when he crossed for two tries within six minutes.
Ireland were sharp and decisive and loom as a distinct possibility to claim one of the three remaining places in the final field of 10.

Kelly was full of praise for the Russian effort.

"Credit to Russia, they gave us the fright of our lives in the first 20 minutes," he said.

"It won't be easy for Lebanon against Russia in Russia next weekend.

Tonga 14 bt Fiji 12 at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku'alofa, Tonga


THE Fiji Bati side slumped to a 12-14 loss to Mate Ma'a Tonga in a one-off Test match at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku'alofa, Tonga, yesterday.
Fiji Bati team manager Rusi Ratakele said an intercept try five minutes from fulltime gave the home team the win.
"We were leading 12-10 with five minutes to go when they intercepted a pass to score in the corner," Ratakele said from the Tongan capital.
"It was a hard and physical match and the coach (Arthur Kitinas) was happy with the performance of the boys.
"The match served as a good build-up to the world cup next year."
Fiji took a 4-0 lead at the breather after Canterbury Bulldogs centre Namila Davui scored the only points of the half.
The home side hit back with two tries, one of which was converted, to lead 10-4.
Fiji winger Sam Wara, who plays his trade with the West Tigers, scored two tries to give the Bati a 12-10 lead before the Tongan intercept.
The Bati side can be proud of themselves for keeping the experienced Tongan side scoreless for the first half.
Ratakele said most of the Tongan players were part of the National Rugby League competition in Australia.
The same Tongan side had hammered the Junior Kangaroos 44-10 last week.
"Our defence stood out tall in the first half and that was shown when we kept the Tongans at bay," Ratakele said.
Ratakele said interim Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama visited the team before and after the match.
"He really boosted the morale of the players and they gave their all this afternoon.
"It was a wonderful game of physical power and strength from both teams." The team arrives home at 11.30am today.
 
PNG State of Origin

An extra time field goal from PNG Gold's (Internationals) captain Keith Peters helped them crush the PNG Reds (Residents)27-26 in the inaugural Telikom PNG Origin match at the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby on Saturday.

Peters, who plays reserve grade from Penrith Panthers in the NSWRL, slotted the one-pointer from 25 metres out of Residents in-goal to clinch the victory, in a process earning himself the first Adrian Lam Medal as the best player of the day.

However, the Residents were off to a flying start with a early 10-point lead through winger Michael Mark and five-eighth Jessie Joe.

Mark from his first touch of football lived up to his reputation as the new Marcus Bai of the PNGNRL when he burst through four International defenders to score next to the post for centre Gimapau Keimelo to add the extras to lead 6-0.

Joe followed suite five minutes later for first of his double when he dived over the line, benefiting from good quick play the ball from big Resident forwards that strained the International defence, creating a gap for him to score.

The Golds led by lock Rod Griffin muscled their way into Reds territory benefiting from hooker Paul Aiton's quick distribution from the base of the ruck which saw prop Kevin Pior dive under the posts and fullback John Wilshere converted to narrow the margin to six points.

The Internationals with their short inside passes carved the Resident and to their advantage took two quick tries to Rod Griffin, for first of his double, and NRL based Penrith hooker Paul Aiton to lead 16-10 at halftime.

In the second-half, the Residents kept in touch with a try to electric full-back Menzie Yere brought the margin down to a try, however, a second Rod Griffin try and another from Super League based full-back John Wilshere nearly got them home.

With five minutes left on the clock, centre Larsen Marabe's try levelled the score at 26-26 to take it to full-time, but a Keith Peters field goal four minutes in the first 10 minutes of the 20 minutes extended time won the Internationals the first ever Telikom PNG Origin match.

The Internationals or PNG Gold as they are more commonly referred to are a side selected from PNG players playing abroad, whereas the Residents or PNG Red are selected from the local PNGNRL competition.

The PNG Rugby Football League has announced a 25-strong Telikom PNG Kumuls touring squad for the France and Wales tour.

The PNG national selectors picked the team on Sunday after watching Telikom PNG Origin rugby league match involving local based players (Residents or PNG Reds) and overseas based players (Internationals or PNG Golds) at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby.

Kumuls coach Adrian Lam said that he believed the best was chosen to take on France and Wales, and remained confident that the tour will be a successful one building up to the Ruby League World Cup in Australia at the end of next year.

Lam, who came up with the Origin concept, said it was good for selecting the best and fair for all players to show what they can offer.

Most old hands and stakeholders in the game believe it is the way forward for development of rugby league as the national sport.

The squad announced were as follows:

From PNG Reds: Menzie Yere, Michael Mark, Gimapau Keimelo, Jessie Joe, Benjamin John, Rodney Pora, Charlie Wabo, Nigel Hukula, George Moni, Joseph Omae, Nixon Kolo, Porian Bal, Nicko Slain.

From the PNG Golds: John Wilshere, Tu Maori, George Keppa, Steve Franciscus, Keith Peters, Kevin Pior, Paul Aiton, Trevor Exton, James Nightingale, Stanley Gene, Makali Aizu and Rod Griffin.

Team officials: Adrian Lam (coach), Michael Marum and Brendan Lam (assistant coaches), Mat Natucsh (physio) and Joe Walter (trainer).

The team leaves for Wales and France Monday 22nd October for Europe via Singapore.
 
Russia V Lebanon this saturday in Russia...

Next weekend Lebanon V Ireland... Presuming (Fingers crossed) Lebanon beat Russia, the winner of Lebanon V Ireland will qualify for the World Cup, the loser will get another chance.
 
As far as i'm aware there are 3 out of 10 positions yet to be filled for the World Cup. Could somebody give me a quick run down on who's still in the running to qualify for those positions and who seems most likely at this stage? Thanks.
