Hi all
in the USA atm and am flirting with the idea of buying an iPad here. $499 plus tax (around 9%) for 16GB wifi only. have had a play with it in a few stores, feels great, looks good.

obvious drawback would be the provision of a USA charger only (of course). can get around it with an adaptor.

drawcard is the price. I heard that the iPad may cost at least $650?

wwyd? (what would you do?)

Sucked in to the hype? They are pretty costly and you can get a more powerful notebook for less. I'd steer clear just on that alone.... However it is easy to say that as I havent played with one. They are going to bring out 3g models in the near future so that might be worth waiting for. That would give it a lot more versatility on the move as a standard 3g thumbdrive modem wont work.

IMO they look pretty without much substance. The hype over these things is OTT and consistent with stupid american consumerism.

Sorry mate, in all honesty, Its hard to give a balance opinion cos I havent played with one.

What would you use it for?

Why would you want a giant iphone that cant make calls?

These r d overriding factors. I don't really need it as a mac would provide all an ipads functions plus more. A big itouch it is. But fun to play with

as I said price is the only pro....

Besides the larger, eBooks is probably the only thing you could do on the iPad that you can't do on an iPhone/iTouch. So do you read a lot?

No I don't and personally think why read on an ipad or nook (barnes n noble).

I think apple have done a great job sucking ppl in. No USB, u must use iTunes to sync. Some ppl will get good use out of it but really laptops r better.

I do think that Aussies will get sucked in too.

I'll be getting one for the fact that I read a LOT of electronic magazines and books. I'd rather the iPad than a netbook because it will seamlessly sync with my networked macs and podcasts. Looking forward to it.

I read somewhere that the ipad can't multi-task. Is that true?

From what I gathered it acts the same as an iPhone. So multiple T as u know it doesn't work

buy if you plan to on-sell it here.

get a netbook or new macbook pro for real work.

Will get an iMac instead of it

then it's good for u. It's sleek but I dunno if sustained reading on it is good for ur wrists/hands as it wld get a touch heavy.

iPhone OS 4.0 which is being released to devs, etc and showcased on Thursday 8th April is supposed to feature Multi-tasking.

Tests have shown also that the iPad is much faster at general tasks than an iPhone 3GS. So pending compatibility of the iPad with OS4.0, then the iPad should get multi-tasking within a couple of months.

Add to that it has already been jailbroken, which has 3-4 different multi-tasking apps.

So Multi-tasking is definitely not out of the equation.

Yeah time will tell. I'm a photographer and spend a lot of time out and about, so I like the idea of having a device like the iPad that can hold a heap of my magazines for those sitting and waiting times.

Might be good to show your portfolio on the move.

Played with one today. Very smart device. Great screen, quick as lightning, very attractive design, nice to hold and use.

I was told its OS is on a chip, which explains why it boots instantaneously.

Watched part of a movie on it, worked well. Speaker is OK, sort of what you'd expect on a device that size.

It was WiFi but I played with it without access to WiFi so can't comment on how well it works on the net. My mate said it was pretty good.

Steer clear of it like the plague.

Feature to cost ratio is pathetic... if you must have one then I'd suggest waiting until at least V2. Be much cheaper, will be multi-tasking, have more storage, and may even have peripheral ports .

Paying sticker price for this is like paying $100k for a stock standard Commodore.

Well, 3 weeks in, I will say the following.

Doesn't replace MacBook pro except about 80% of the time.

Is a fantastic device for people doing the tasks that 80% of people do on a computer. The Skype limitation is the only thing that really bugs me (you can message but no camera is limiting).

The battery life is at least as good as advertised. I did Perth - HK this week, turned it on when I arrived at Perth airport ((2 hours) then watching HD video all the way in the plane (the screen is excellent) (6+ hours) and St that stage I had 41% charge left). In a couple of all day sessions running PowerPoint presentations I have bend getting about 11 hours - that's been my minimum battery life and that's in full use.

I use citrix to access my office desktop which enables multi- tasking on work business. I honestly reckon no multi-tasking is overstated as a problem for most users and will be fixed in OS 4 anyway.

If you travel, want a portable device for doing work that's impossible on the phone (if you are honest) like editing documents, preparing power points, reading papers or books and browsing the web, checking and writing emails then it's great and does replace the need to have my MacBook pro most of the time. I use goodreader (app) together with dropbox (app) -which can be linked for file sharing between various machines and there are apps that resolve most of the issues people like to go on about.

Travelling on business or in general and you have a machine that's easy to use, lasts 12+ hours, allows game playing (very good), video viewing (very good), emailing, music, photos and it's a stellar ebook device + it does 75% of your business uses just as well as your Mac and you can use your entire desktop multi-tasking via citrix (or other for those not in a citrix environment).

It is already a massively integral part of my day. It really is very good and much much much much better than any net book I have used. Will still have a MacBook pro but 80% of the time I used it before I don't use it now. Will go up if they give me a camera that I can plug in or they build one in V2.

Play with one for a while before writing them off based on specs ...
