Mine arrived yesterday. It's a great device that will save me carrying my laptop around when I travel and has a much better interface than my blackberry. Also a great sales tool for meetings and presentations.

I bought it to get mobile access to all my reading material.

I'm surprised that people are comparing it to a laptop to be honest. It's not designed to replace a workhorse laptop, it will be used for quite different reasons. I guess if people don't read they won't understand it. When I travel I have at least 4-5 books and 4-5 journals with me. Getting rid of that makes it worthwhile instantly.

ALso the battery life is awesome.

Looks like a waste of money really. Can't be used as a proper computer. Pretty much an expensive portable dvd player with internet capabilities.

I can't believe people would actually waste money on an iPad. Where's natural selection when you need it.

You're both so so wrong. Dismiss Apple. Dismiss the iPad. That's fine. But what Apple has done is successfully created a new segment in the technology market that in my opinion, will persist. No doubt some people will criticise the iPad for not having this or not having that, and in some cases, that may be justified. But ask yourself why businesses and developers are falling over themselves to create content for such devices. The Australian newspaper already has an iPad app. The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald will soon follow. The ABC is rushing to get their iPad app to market. Tablet and slate devices could very well re-energise the newspaper industry. I could go on ...

PS: I don't have an iPad and I won't be buying one any time soon.

Surely the reason is obvious rnb? Apple have taken over the World and have a massive number of followers.

The ipad is a nothing device really, great to play with I am sure but offers nothing that isn't already covered.

What you segment have they created IYO? They've done what they always do, advertise it brilliantly.

I don't care about it except when the news states that "tech heads" are rushing out to buy it. I don't know any tech minded person that has shown the slightest interest in it.

I'm probably way behind, but I never realised e-books were so widely available that there'd be a significant market for a dedicated reader. Even if e-books are more widespread than I realise (which I think they must be), I would have thought people would have just read them on their existing laptops anyway.

WHOE there Borgs..be careful for those whom love the forbidden fruit may get testy at such outrageous nonsense...they are such a touchy minority!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest, I don't think any of them have heard of a tablet PC or perhaps the P88!!!

I'm guessing these companies just simply didn't perfect the brainwashing techniques quite so effectively as APPLE!

OH to gimicks ;)

i get sore eyes looking at a monitor for too long. i couldnt read a book on one or an ipad personally

I agree with this. Plus, there's something about haveing a book in your hands that allows you to become more engrossed in the story, as opposed to reading from a monitor.

However, I will concede that the iPad would be a very useful study tool for a Uni student. If you could use it to write/type lecture notes and read textbooks it would save a lot of time carrying around books and other bulky goods.

In my opinion there is definitely a need for a device that is not as small as a smartphone and not as awkward as a notebook computer. My argument has nothing to do with Apple. Android will release their own tablet. Windows may follow but they are rather irrelevant in the smaller form factors.

The Server Team manager at my work bought an iPad when he was in the US recently. He wanted an ebook reader, anything else is a bonus for him. I went to Borders yesterday and what an absolute drag it was to go looking for an actual book. Shops that sell books, dvds and music, as well as your local DVD rental stores, will become a thing of the past. Larry Ellison (Oracle CEO) said as much back in the 90s about software. There is simply no need to go to a shop and buy hard copies of software and other consumables. If you want something, you want to be able to easily search for it, pay for it, and acquire it at any time, on any day.

As we know, the iPad is primarily a content consumption device. Its apparent inability to create content could be considered a shortcoming. Perhaps for this reason some pundits are criticising the device. But not everyone has or needs a notebook computer. These people may be interested in an easy to use tablet device where they can share photos and videos, quickly and easily get on the internet while sitting on the couch or when they are on the road. It will become commonplace for people to travel with a tablet rather than a notebook.

I think we will look back in 5-10 years and accept that Apple were the first to successfully market a device we never knew so many people needed. We didn't need mobile phones until recently, now many people such as myself don't have a need for a home phone anymore.

Well I had 2 tablets - why? Because the first one was repaired 3 times (in less than a year at a month each time) until it was irreparable and they agreed to replace it for a new one. The new one didn't have to be repaired more than once but was incredibly dodgy. I tried to hawk it off to a workmate (and get a new laptop) but said workmate refused it use it after a month.

Those tablets were supposed to be replacements for laptops and were huge failures. Underspeced and incredibly overpriced - at least double the price.

The iPad is for a totally different purpose. I really wish people could understand that they are NOT a replacement for a laptop.

Also reading a book on a laptop is like water torture. Having now been reading on the iPad it is a totally differnt experience. It also allows me to read without having to put a light on which is all kinds of good.

eta what RedBlack said.

Also what people don't understand about commercialisation is that being market leaders and releasing technology changing devices is incredibly expensive because not only do you have to advertise your product you have to educate your potential customers so that they know what they're buying into. Competitors to Apple generally don't have the funds to do this or more imortantly do not have the knowledge and experience to do it well. So all manufacturers of similar devices to the iPod/iPhone/iPad have benefitted greatly from Apple's marketing campaigns.

I don't get it.

Apparently its not as good as a laptop. It can't make calls. It's main thing seems to be you can read books on it. Why is this better than reading an actual book?

Now I still have a $50 Nokia mobile so I think all this stuff is above me.

It's an Apple so it gets lots of hype.

As someone who has a fair bit of travelling ahead of them in the next 12 months and will likely not really be living anywhere for longer than 3-4 months at a time, I took a serious look at the Ipad.

I loved the interface and it does have some pretty cool qualities, my problem was that I spend allot of time downloading and watching movies/tv shows, I also like to drop by mates and leech of them before I go abroad.

The work required to do this on an Ipad is what sunk it for me, you can't simply plub your ipad into another computer and download. Having to convert and use itunes everytime would annoy me. It's a shame really considering I much prefer the interface and would actually have allot more fun using it.

At this stage even for the cost, Macbook Pro 13 is the one for me. I've never had a Mac before, but after years of only getting 24 months out of computers and laptops its time to try the more stable platform. I'm a non-gamer who spends allot of time on the internet and watching movies, i need stability over performance.

iTunes will become web-based so that should be better for all. Of course you can jailbreak your iPad and that will give you greater flexibility with what you can do. Android will probably have a device to market within a few months. That said, the MBP13 is a sexy beast.

Remember that the iPad and soon-to-be-released devices (Android, etc) are 1st generation. They will become much improved within a couple years.

I don't dismiss Apple. I have an iPod touch and think it's fantastic. I just don't think that the iPad really does any one thing particularly well.

What's the big fuss with reading books electronically? It hurts my eyes to read big slabs of text online and that's after I've made sure I buy the best quality computer monitors. I always print off my journal articles that I have to read.
