I thought they were just sooks regarding the AFL and International Rules.

Played well Ireland though. I missed the second half of this game, so if someone could elaborate on the dubious decision, that would be great.

I'm not known to be a conspiracy theorist ;) but this decision definitely helped the AFL's little darlings in South Africa along and there is certainly no love lost between the AFL and Ireland.

Ireland's International Cup campaign ended in a disappointing manner when South Africa were awarded a 25 metre penalty after the siren which was converted to give the South Africans a one point victory. Players, Spectators and officials were left bemused with the decision which denied Ireland third place in the tournament. Complaints were made to AFL officials, who admitted that they were embarressed by the events, but the result stands. The South Africans deserve huge credit for the manner of their comeback in the game and we would like to congratulate them on third place, while also stating categorically that it was an umpiring error which handed them the victory. It is most unfortunate that having conducted ourselves on a virtually professional level for three weeks or more, our reward is to be punished by amateur umpiring. The outcome of this game places Ireland's participation in future events in question.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors, supporters, the people of Koroit and Warrnambool as well as our players and support staff for everything they've done in the 2008 International Cup. We would also like to acknowledge the organising team at the AFL for their work on what was largely a good tournament, albeit one which ended on a sour note for us.

If the Irish player did go over the mark it (the 25m penalty) was justified.

What made it confusing is that the Sth African player, being about 65m out from goal and obviously not knowing the rule about no playing on after the siren, baulked the player on the mark and ran around him to get closer to goal.

Did the Irish player step over the mark first or did the Sth African guy play on first? Couldn't tell myself. Although I did think as the guy went to take his kick "gee that Irish guy better be careful not to step over the mark" as he was close and seemed to go over.

thanks for this !

anyone know if there is a video of this.

I know the AFL has had some free highlights on their Bigpond website, but I daresay this incident wouldn't make the cut. :p

I noticed a few guys with camcorders and camera's taking video during the game. One of them may have caught the finish.

Regardless of the umpires decision, the sight of the Sth African's celebrating after they thought they had lost was something to remember! They went absolutely nuts! The Sth African's will go back with a spring in their step and determined to get better after that.

Yes there is a video of the game. The SA player would have been kicking from about 55 and was no chance, now why Ireland's no 27 decided to walk forward of the mark by several meters before the SA player played on is an answer he needs to ask himself.

Shades of Jim Stynes then eh ?

The team sheet says that no 27 is Alex Whooley (of the Sydney University of Technology Bats). Perhaps the fact that he is listed at 175 cm might explain it. Nevertheless, if it was him, you'd think that playing in Australia would teach him some aspects of the game.

I saw the incident. Now video may prove me and others wrong, but to the naked eye it looked like he played on and should not have been awarded the free kick. If so it is an absolute disgrace.

The umpiring during the Cup was at times very poor. It's great to give school kids and female umpires opportunities to field umpire, but I don't think the International Cup is the right time and place.

Look forward to seeing the video of the match.

Funny that you say this.

I overheard one of the umpires talking on the phone after a particular match on the Western Oval. He was bragging to one of his mates that he just umpired an international team (I won't say which, but he seemed impressed by it) - in his third time umpiring !

I was gobsmacked.

Mind you I wasn't suprised based on the standard of some of the umpiring displayed. There were times I think that the international players had a better grip on the rules and that's saying something.

Some of these teams would be used to and expect much better than this. In fact I'm sure that there are plenty of international umpires with more experience than some of the ones they got given.

One of them was so fat I struggled to fathom his ability to actually run and follow the play ...

I can think of several internaional players who would have felt right at home with this kind of umpiring .... and umpire ! :D

Seriously if this is all true (about the level of (in)experience of the umps I mean), then this is a real problem. I would have thought that one of the main advantages (if not THE main advantage) of having the IC in Australia is to give the amateur international players experience under professional umpiring.

I've said it in other threads ... time for the IC to hit the road. London, New York anyone?

I umpired in the 2005 version of the IC.

All the umpires are local league umpires and I remember they had trouble filling games as they are all midweek. I had to take a day off to do the game and alot of umpires would have trouble doing that, especially AFL umpires as they spend long enough in travelling and training to umpire AFL games and they alot of them have full time jobs already.

I remember one of the guys who umpired a different game to mine could barely crack it for Reserves in our local league.

I've read how much AR is growing in South Africa.
You'd think if this was the case, they'd be able to field a team with players who know the rules of the game.

Ironic that it seems that it won them the game .
I played RU and didn't know the rules .
Watching the Force games it's interesting to watch fans guess the penalty .
It seems that I'm at no disadvantage not knowing the intricacies .

I was actually umpiring this particular game-allthough on the boundary. I can tell you, the boy was absolutely correct in awarding the penalty, as he put the mark on the centre square line, and you can see on the video as the SA player "plays on", the IRE player is over the line.

In response to the actual quality of umpiring, i agree. Some people i ran with were just umpiring junior football before doing international games. My league (not going to say which league that is) supplied young umpires, who regularily ran senior metro football-i also am a field umpire normally who runs senior games-yet no-one from my league got a final, with the GF umpiring going to a female whose highest umpiring level was doing some under 15 games(eclipsing the umpires from my league who are trialling with the VFL this year, and are under 20 years of age). Fair enough of you want to blood some younger umpires, but we have better young umpires than these people. Some of the umpiring i saw was awful and embarrassing to be affiliated with, but availability is an issue for a mid-week tournament too

Here's the video for anyone wondering what happened ....

Even though I'm not a fan of the decision, just love the pitch invasion and big pile on at the end ...
