Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

Does anyone get the feeling that the team is just going through the motions? After Mihocek kicked the goal to put us back in front in the last quarter,we barely gave a yelp ,and let them do pretty much as they pleased. The same thing happened against GWS two weeks ago,We were down ten points halfway through the last quarter, and seemed to have all the momentum, yet we didn’t kick another score for the rest of the game, while they had another five shots at goal.

That suggests to me a team that isn’t really going flat out to win games.Every time we play these days, the other team looks far hungrier and more desperate than we do.It’s starting to become noticeable now,so you have to ask the question.Has Buckley lost the players already?Have they given up already?
Wouldn't surprise me if the players have emotionally checked out. They're intelligent enough to realise he's probably gone mid-season or at the end of the year.

I think the circumstances of Treloar's departure has broken the trust and rapport that was built up over many years between the coach and his playing group. There's no coming back from that now.

I've never been a huge Bucks fan (as a coach) but I actually think he is maximizing what we have right now.

Our midfield is depleted and on the decline.

I'm not sure free agency is the way to go (even though I would love a quick answer).

More than likely we'll need to go the draft for 2-3 years until our cap issues smooth out.

Whilst it’s true that this crop of players are the worst he has had, Buckley hasn’t recently shown much touches of “magic” one would expect from any tactical expert to hide our weaknesses (the West Coast final game last year aside).

Madgen to the wing?

Would be great if there was a so called 'shock' announcement in 6 hrs time.. let's not go the full 16.

I have absolutely had it.

You cannot blame Bucks for yesterdays loss. Our player's disposal was horrendous yesterday, and we were still in the game. We turned over the footy at crucial times. Madgen (absolutely useless), Sidey, Maynard, Crisp were our worst culprits. 3 of those 4 are mostly effective by foot, but not yesterday. You cannot blame Bucks for our poor disposals. Maybe it's a confidence thing, but we need to clean up our ball use. I can see the game style we are trying to play, but we can not execute it by foot.

A Buckley coached side has rarely been able connect from the back to the midfield to the forward line.. even when we've had a shitload of good to great players out there..

If I handed Buckley a bottle of la nuit de l'homme.. he wouldn't know what to do with it re..

The only time we looked any good under Buckley was 2018, actually came up with a game plan that had teams reacting to us.

But then Longmuir left and that fast ball movement went with him. I think it was his influence more than Bucks as as soon as he left, the slow, sideways BS came back and it was all about 'effort', not skill and speed.

Boycotting games is what Richmond supporters do when they are sh*t.
I stayed until the final siren, I never used to but I changed my habits. I have my old man to thank for that. Whenever he goes, which isn’t all that often these days due to his age, he always stays until the end.

I've never left a game before the final siren, and I've sat through some horror stories.

I'd normally back you in on most things Dave, but that attitude is a little too piss poor.

You need to adjust your expectations about how good we are and where we sit amongst the other teams. An early season coaching change isn't going to do us much good at this stage, although I am in the camp that believes Bucks will pull the pin himself at the end of the season, if not before.

It's funny how it seems many who were predicting we'd be a bottom 4 side this year post trade period are now the more vitriolic when we are.

Who is our midfield coach and forwards coach? We have the worst structured forward line in the AFL. We could poach the best forwards in the league and kill their career within weeks, there’s no structure or communication between mids and forwards, no one creates space in the forward 50, no leads, just close your eyes and kick it into the forward line

One of my earlier in-person memories was going to R17 against St Kilda in 2005. We were down 15.14 to 8.8 at 3 quarter time, and 5 year-old me desperately wanted to go home. But the old man wouldn't allow it. Ended up getting trounced by 73 points and I was not particularly impressed, but I have never thought about leaving a game early since.

People have been screaming "play the kids" and then when we do (5th youngest team on the weekend, =5th <50 game players, 6 players <10 games, 7th for average games) they seem shocked by the outcomes. Harken's back to the bad days pre 2018 when 1/2 the senior side were sitting in the stands watching games instead of playing in them. Even then though we had more experienced depth. A luxury we off loaded last year. Essendon are a peer in this regard. Primary difference yesterday, their senior players (Parish, Tippa, Merrett, Stringer, Heppell) stood up when needed, ours not so much so.

The presence of debate answers nothing, especially on a bloody football forum. What a ridiculous thing to say.

There are people who still debate whether the Earth is round - does that ongoing debate answer the question for you?
They would be the Buckley supporters

you just need to be patient ray. we'll be working on a new coach at this time next year.

I've sat in the stands at the G.. on my own.. many a time.. over the course of the last 10 yrs.. for a half an hr or whatever after a game and that re.. thinking.. 'For the love of God.. how on earth is this bloke still coaching us'.

It's nice that you and all your mates get that quality quiet time together.
