Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

Did you watch today. Players who had poor weeks coming in all miraculously improved, and bucks was still the coach
Maynard and Crisp's comments post game were interesting; BM - after 1 month of debate around Buckley's contract the decision had lifted a weight off their shoulders, JC - that Buckley was more relaxed this week and smiling more. I didn't take either to be slight on Buckley, rather that the uncertainty had played a part and built pressure within the group.

Can't help but think when Malthouse decided to not honour his role when Buckley took over, why didn't the club bring home Mark Williams to fill that position?

He’d already agreed to gws hadn’t he? He signed on with gws and was head coach, except for the name - which they agreed to have sheedy for marketing purposes

The agreement with the AFL was for Choco to take over long term in year 2 with Sheedy walking away. Then AFL reneged as sheedy marketing in Sydney was quite successful.

AFL also told Choco he would only be on $130k a year to do everything while Sheedy got the credit - and that he would not be coach long term. The $130k was basically an insult - considering the time and effort he spent to build gws and young kids while he rented a property in Sydney and had school fees to pay for his kids.

So Choco told em to shove it and walked away without going into the rooms after the last game. Reading between the lines AFL didn’t like his response and basically black balled him. Luckily, Hardwick employed him at Richmond - an appointment I imagine AFL weren’t to happy about, which gave Choco a chance to show how good he was again.

He’s discussed this situation in the podcast “Sacked Coach” in detail.

Hands down, instead of Buckley succession - we’d just have been better off letting Malthouse go on to 2014 with his list and hiring Williams out right to replace Malthouse

The Nathan Buckley Football Club is now gone.

The Collingwood Football Club is reborn. And I for one, couldn’t be any ******* happier!!

Viva Collingwood
Floreat Pica

Now let’s go out and get a coach that will build long term success and place us in the best position possible for multiple flags

Mark Williams, your time is now
I hope not. In a supporting role maybe.

Nah not in the no.1 role. Support role/mentor to Kingsley, Mitchell or Yze.

That you Shawy?

After a few chats I think the club realised Buckley will have been there for 15 years before we are realistically challenging again.

What does the media pressure, outside noise look like having a coach for 15 years without a flag.

While it’s hard to swallow it’s probably for the best we have a fresh slate. Bucks very unlucky. We win 2018 he probably coach’s for another 5 years

w***er. Collingwood doesn’t want people like you.

There’s a reason Buckley is a Collingwood hero and you’re a keyboard warrior on BigFooty

Was there any truth in the story that Bucks was offered a three year contract, but preferred to depart.
No given he was willing to find a way and continue coaching next year if club offered

Don't know that they ever got to the point of offering a contract but from what we've heard Wrighty and Bucks were in ongoing discussions and a 2-5 year coaching tenure was agreed as what would be needed going forward. Seems Bucks wasn't able to commit to that tenure so there really wasn't much point talking contracts with him.

At the time I "okay" with losing 2018 as I thought we would win in 2019. Alas, Collingwood's history taught us that we should have taken the 2018 chance.

Do you know if there was going to be a mentor?

Unfortunately we don't seem to be able to win one out of nowhere. In 2019 we lost De Goey and Greenwood in QF and choked really in PF (yes I know giants had key players out too) but in 2020 we looked really good until Howe went down and the hub life impacted us.

His game plan never worked due to the amount of turnover kings who couldn't hit a target to save themselves but I feel he never reacted during games to shut down the momentum of the opposition. It's fine to stick to a plan but sometimes plans have to change during a game. Barassi 1970 damn it!!!!

Game plans depend on the cattle you have on the ground, hard to replace if the cupboard is bare.
