The only reason Ottens wasn't consistent was because of injury. Doesn't automatocally eliminate him from being better or not. Cloke is inconsistent and yet his best is better than nearly every CHF in the league.

Dean coxs best is still better than Ottens best so what's your point? Ottens played enough games with no impact when he was fit, just because he turned it once or twice when needed doesnt mean he's an all timer. Would be behind Cox, Sandi, lade, primus in the last decade alone.

While I don't think Cox is the greatest ruckman of all time, he is right up there. Where as not a single soul would make any noise about Ottens being the greatest ruckman ever.

Does that make Cloke comparable to Carey?

Farmer - Enough said.

Dempsey - Greatest tap ruckman of them all. 329 games. Brownlow medalist, 7 best and fairest, more hit outs in one season than any other player in recorded history. Had 40 disposals and 22 marks in a match against Simon Madden and Peter Keenan.

Dyer - A colossus. 312 games, 443 goals, 7 best and fairest, 7 grand finals.

Teasdale - Brownlow medalist and 4 time club B&F

Madden - Freak. 4 x best and fairest, 2 x premierships, Norm Smith Medalist and kicked 575 goals to boot.

Nicholls - Triple premiership captain. 5 best and fairest. 328 games, 307 goals.

Wright - 2 x Brownlow Medals, 4 x best and fairest

Stynes - Brownlow Medal, Leigh Matthews trophy, 4 x best and fairest

Thompson - Brownlow medalist and 5 time club B&F. 303 games, 275 goals.

Coventry - Brownlow medalist, dual best and fairest, 4 x premiership player.

There's ten off the top of my head.

Lets not forget 4 years captaincy and holds the record for most Career Brownlow votes

Of those who voted 'yes' how many are gen Y? I am gen Y as well, so most in contention I have not seen play either. I have been watching Footy since the late 80's and being fairly young back then my first memories of ruckmen were the likes of Rehn, J.Madden, Barnes et al. None IMO were at the level of Dean Cox, and my point is that it's so easy to say someone is the best when you don't have much to compare to. It's hard to compare something that you haven't experienced either.

Growing up in Geelong, from all reports from people who lived through the era of Polly Farmer, he is and always will be the best Ruckman to have ever played the game. Biased ? Perhaps, but I still hear from people to this day who don't barrack for Geelong and who have no affiliation with WA (mainly South Australians) that in their opinion he's the best they've seen. Will his legacy live on passed those people who saw him in his era? It's hard to say, but I always wondered whether there weren't any good ruckman in the 10's and 20's or whether there just aren't any people left to remember.

Cox would be lucky to be in the top ten. No sensibly constructed list will ever rank him ahead of Polly Farmer, Gary Dempsey, Roy Wright, Simon Madden or John Nicholls for starters, so he's not even in the top five.

Darcy > Cox right?

Best ruck forward, yes. Clutch player who stands up time and time again.

Best sole ruck? Probably not.

Simon Madden kicked 575 goals, averaged 1.5 goals per game, kicked 8 twice, 7 three times, 6 six times and 5 eleven times.

Cox has kicked 145 goals, averages 0.6 per game and has kicked 5 once.
