Is GWS's premiership window about to close?

The thing with Haynes, he is nearly 30, I do not think he will see a premiership at GWS.

This is not a quick fix either. They would need 3-4 years rebuild depending on whats coming through the draft.

Why salary dump them?? If they don't get anything for them no point in trading them.

Even Toby Greene, could trade him to and start again, he is 28 going on 29.

I would rebuild the whole team around Callaghan, Taranto and Green as well as guys like Ash and Taylor, Hopper etc...

No point in doing just a salary dump, otherwise they are going great, getting another top draft pick even with Toby, Kelly, Whitfield etc.. who will come of the contracts eventually.

How did Suns go with a salary dump for Brodie?

So with Coniglio, trade him to Freo for H Young?

This is the stupidity of the long contract, if their contracts where ending they could get a FA pick

think if they are looking for a quick fix, trade Conglio out and put Toby Greene back in the middle. So Green and Greene in the guts and figure out the forward line and backline

How is that Leek aleer going? May as well give him a run

I don't think they try enough things, may be move Coniglio to half forward. I would drop Himmelberg. Move Whitfield to half forward maybe. Have a small forward line, put Taranto CHF.

Maybe put Taylor FF, Hogan CHF, leek Aleer in the backline.

They also need to do a few things differently like use a chaos ball for a small forward line, kick it on the deck to give the small forwards a chance. I
f their talls are not great why bomb it? I thought Pruess and Flynn where okay as a positive

Love the idea of trading Coniglio for H Young, ....... nah. Maybe the Eagles may be interested ?.

Coniglio was a star back in 2010, but has never hit those heights again.

At present trade values, Young > Coniglio.

They have 20 players on their list who were originally first round picks.

They had 12 first rounders playing tonight (Ash pick 4, Bruhn 12, Callaghan 3, Coniglio 2, Green 10, Greene 11, Haynes 7, Himmelberg 16, Kelly 2, Perryman 14, Taranto 2, Whitfield pick 1).

I'd suggest lack of talent isn't what is holding them back.

Cameron probably been there too long now and time for someone else, wouldn’t most side have around half their side first round picks? Or at least initially taken as one.

Thing is GWS haven’t got many big fish in via free agency or trades, basically they keep getting guys via the draft as they keep loosing players and getting more picks in.

I just think it’s a bit of a myth that they are ridiculously more talented than all sides in the comp and are dramatically underachieving.

They just kept recruiting more midfielders, more than they could use. You’ve got Steele, Treloar, Adams, Kennedy, Shiel, Caldwell etc. running around for other clubs now. There’s still too much midfield talent at GWS to give them all adequate development time.
Yet their KPP stocks are terrible.

Shut.

Largely that, endless midfield supply but their KPP stocks don’t rank very high at all

Got stock in the middle. Draft or lure a few KPP and under a new coach/gamestyle they may be able to crowbar the window up a bit but at the moment it's slammed down harder than <insert witty simile here>.

Isn't that what they attempted to do last year when they recruited Hogan? It also seemed like they were expecting Riccardi to become a greater forward than he has been so far.

You'd have to say a loss to the in-form Crows next week and it's 100% season over for the Giants. You can't start a season 1-6 and expect to play finals. I know the Swans did it but that's such a rare anomaly that not even the most optimistic punter would be hoping for it. The problem then starts to become - how many of these talented players stick around if the Giants aren't playing finals? We know the teams in Victoria, SA and WA would be eyeing off their players if it looks like they are gettable.

Season is over
Don’t think Cameron has the energy to invest in this year
Plenty of issues past and present at the club but the lack of experienced players shouldn’t be overlooked
The constant trading out of players with 10, 20, 50 games has been underrated as an issue the club has faced and then setting up to integrate 2-4 new players every year to learn the system and the senior players not having the experience to assist in integrating the draftees
I was always in support of bringing in former afl listed players even if they were playing reserves to help the draftees and act as on-field coaches and even for next year someone like Jacob Townsend would offer a significant amount to the younger players

Cameron to go around the bye

At least 3 months to find candidates and just hoping the process has some good people involved and not some back slapping boys club dumb asses

Yes you are
Callaghan, Bruhn, Green, Hopper, Taranto, Ash, Greene, Taylor, Cumming, Daniels, Whitfield, Kelly and Coniglio all 28 and under.

Only a moron would think that list's premiership window is closed.

How many night games have gws won in Canberra, Id think it would be pretty low. They want to play perfect football in perfect conditions, as soon as it gets a bit cold they go missing, the problem is clubs have first, second, third and fourth round picks in their side, when you have a team of first rounders they don't defend, it's all about me, not team first, Shaw, Johnson and Mumford, ward kept them in line, however only ward left, there's no experience to pull them up

The entire GWS project is collapsing in ashes in my opinion.

They need to over-pay to get their players and have overpaid for the likes of Whitfield, Coniglio and Kelly.

The media tries to talk up Toby Greene as an excitement machine but they are dead boring to watch.

I'd like to see the GWS TV ratings but my guess is they are very poor.

its better than no game, because unless theyre playing GC theres still a few hundred thousand of the opposition supporters watching. wonder if the tv rights will reflect the money put into gws though, as last time the rights were over inflated because of the new teams and the broadcasters might have wised up a bit.

Cameron is a joke of a coach. Wasting elite talent like no other coach ever has or will.
It’s unbelievable.

Agree he has to go. Even blokes like Riccardi showed talent early and Leon has managed to coach all the talent out of his players. They all play without any joy or flare. Depressing to watch. Almost painful to watch.

It won't actually cost them anything to let him go $$$ wise

6 month payout but just let McVeigh coach until the end of the year.

Gives them a full six months to appoint a new coach.

Has to be done. They could contend again with this group.

Window is well closed.
But Clarko will reopen it in October when he gets them playing some team oriented football, with some structure and discipline. With Clarkson (or Hardwick or Longmire or even Lyon) they would have won in in 2016 and at least one more.
Nah, Clarko will go to the Suns unless they make finals, in which case he either goes there in a Paul Roos role or the Giants pick him up. I can see Hinkley and Simpson surviving.

GC is too off broadway for Clarko. He will love being in Sydney opposite Horse. He can do more good there. GWS is an easier fix than GC. He would have them top 4 in 2023.

The players look confused. They keep getting played out of position. There run and carry is gone. It is a shame as I used to like watching them play, some of their players were really exciting (and have huge upside). Coaching change 2 years overdue.
