Is North Melbourne passing on Logan McDonald going to be the 2021 version of the Bulldogs passing on Buddy for Ryan Griffin

McDonald isn’t academy?
No but you don't need to tank when you've got a steady supply of elite talent. If you miss McDonald you've still got another good kid to add to the collection. Nearing 30 years of superstar key forwards trading themselves to Sydney for the quiet life too. If you don't get McDonald there's always the next Daniher who would've requested a trade there eventually.

So Melbourne tanked because they don’t have beaches, righto

Hardly a steady supply. We have had 4 first round Academy draftees in 10 years.

Not expecting any in the 2021 draft either.

Over a decade and about 4 coaches and 4 regimes ago Melbourne decided to tank to get the priority pick they deserves after being rubbish for 3 years and losing the Kreuzer cup to Carlton who tanked harder.
What does it mean to "deserve" a priority pick?

Generally you deserve something based on effort/merit. You don't deserve anything except ridicule for being a basket case.

Maybe both of them will become great players?

I understand the notion that the Roos need a gun forward and Macca would have filled that but in the same sense, the Roos have quite a few holes on field and picking a gun mid does sort that midfield hole. Guess we will see in 2 or 3 years time whether Phillips is the man who will lead the Roos midfield or the next ten

Just the 4 in 7 years including getting two top 4 picks when you're in the top 4 of the ladder. Cool cool cool.

Sydney are a great club that don't need North Melbourne dishing you superstars on a platter, but geez the high and mighty attitude from the poster I quoted is ridiculous.

4 in 7 years sure, but it is also 4 in 10 years since that is how long the academy has been going for.

Also one of those picks we were lucky as he was the son of a pretty good player, so that is not likely to happen again so in reality it is 3 in 10 years.

Who kicks the goals?

We matched the Tigers for inside 50s and lost by nearly 5 goals. Because we need 1 or 2 goal kicking key forwards.

When? In 2023? Before then it won’t really matter.

By then Larkey will be 25 & we can go the Trade/FA route if we need another. The club also rates Comben from the 2019 draft very highly (currently injured).

North’s midfield has been average for 20 years. I personally prefer us to prioritise mids with our early picks for now - building a really strong young midfield group.

If you want draft blunders check out Melbourne’s haul from the 2001 super draft.

9- Luke Molan - 0 games. Could have had Dal Santo or James Kelly.

25 and 26 - Steven Armstrong and Aaron Rogers. 43 games for Armstrong at the Dees, 0 for Rogers. Armstrong won a flag at West Coast. Could have had LRT, Campbell Brown, Mitchell or Montagna.

55 - Brad Miller. Best of them in the ND with 133 games. But Dane Swan, Adam Schneider and Brian Lake all in the potential other picks.

Rookie pick 6 - Mark Jamar. 155 games and All Australian - best of our picks.

After our rookie pick 23 all of Matthew Boyd, Nathan Bock and Ben Rutten were available.

You want all time whiffs, Melbourne and the 01 super draft is it. You add Dal Santo, Mitchell, Montagna and Lake to the 04 Melbourne side and we win at least 1 flag from 04-06 and potentially 2 given the weaker state of the comp. Its one of the all time disasters. And you don’t even need to add all of them - maybe even 1 in 04 gets us the double chance.

not sure it's top 5.

1) Tambling over Buddy
2) Scully/Trengove over Dusty
3) McCartin over Petracca
4) Ariel Steinberg over Luke Parker
5) Dow at 3 not looking pretty either.

Not even the worse of 2020.
Bruhn over any other player who might hang around for more than 2 years.

Aaron Fiora ahead of Pav deserves to be on the list.

That's my point though, likely we dont even pick jack 2 years later if we had buddy.

We definately don't end up with Dusty either.

Head to head it was a terrible pick but in hindsight not that bad

But yes with that logic all crappy decisions of the 80s 90s and 00s led Richmond to this point.

A 30 odd year master plan?

Is my club attempting the same thing?

Don't think picking Martin would have helped Melbourne too much- he would inevitably have left when GWS knocked on the door.

From memory we turned Scully into Hogan who sold to Freo for the pick that got us Stevie May. So it worked out ok for us in the end, and it's a bit unfair anyway as Trenners was unlucky with injuries.

It's not like we took two absolute spuds instead.

The academy system is fine, but the way it interfaces with the draft, especially in the first round, is unfair. You begin draft with one top 5 pick, and then you make off with picks 4 and 5. The rule change is a simple one to make: if you really want Campbell, you take him with pick 4, if you prefer to take McDonald at that pick, go for it. If you can trade up beforehand to get two first round picks, then well done - otherwise it’s just a mockery to trade in half a dozen 4th rounders to match a bid at pick 5. The NGA is the same, they have to fix it.

As for the Logan>Phillips question.. I’ll wait until they’ve both played a game, thanks..

There was a thread a back in 2017 after about 3 games about how Sam Powell Pepper should’ve gone pick 1.

Four since Melbourne bid on Mills in 2015. From that draft onwards Melbourne have only had 2 first round draft picks.

Every other team would kill to have Sydney’s academies especially when you still have access to father/sons.

Fiora over Pavlich doesn't get a mention?

Last father/son we drafted is currently playing for Hawthorn.

Also pretty much every first round academy kid cost a first round draft pick so we are not getting these players for free.

Which is the same luck of the draw for every father son team. We’ve had one decent one in Daniher and we got one season of good football from him. It’s not a significant advantage.

Would every club in the competition like the access to top 3 picks like Heeney and Mills for cents on the dollar? You even played the rules which forced a change to get Rowbottom, meaning only you could benefit from it.

Just accept you’re getting an absolute ride that everyone would kill for.
