While he plays for a different team Matthew Richardson is held in very high esteem in my books, I love the way he goes about his football.

His passion is just so entertaining to watch, and he also seems like a nice guy, he is the sought of player that will produce the play of the day and the blooper of the day.

Do you hold Matthew Richardson in high regard?

I think Richo has been one of the best "raw talents" to ever play the game. Unfortunantly, what has held him back from being a superstar of the game is things like poor kicking, doing the impossible but missing the easy and being reluctant to have a defensive side to his game.

Bloody oath, Where else can you see a player have a dummy spit, Kick 5 goals miss a goal from 5 metres out and then take 10 spectacular marks all in the one game.

He's my favorite Richmond player. hes good value. :)

Richo is a bit like a black comedy, a Greek tragedy perhaps. Brilliant one moment, totally useless the next. I do enjoy watching him play without a doubt and find him to be a funny bastard. He's one of the biggest sooks in the game too. To this day, he is the only player I've witnessed who has the ability to be mid flight going for a mark and be able to turn towards the ump and plead for a free kick before he hits the ground after he realises he isn't going to get the grab. Breathtaking stuff.
I'm glad he plays, put it that way.

I love Richo.
He would be a bona fide star at any other club and would have several 100 goal seasons to his name.

He is wasted on Richmond.

As much as I have loved the big guy at the Tigers you are right at nearly any other team in the comp with a decent skilled mid field he would have had a much more successful career.

However the fact he has stayed at Richmond just shows the nature of his charecter and how much he loves the club. Has for many years unfairly been the poster boy for Richmonds Non Success. Hopefully he can play a few more seasons and the club can have finals success.

But it's true not many players could in the space of 5 minutes miss a goal from dead in front 15 meters out, take a massive hanger and kick a goal 50 out from the boundry.

The tantrum and dummy spits (or at least the number of them) are the most overstated thing about his game. I would have seen him play approx 200 times live and reckon i have seen no more than a hand full of dummy spits. In fact i see just as many from opposition forwards.

The kicking for goal is clearly the thing that is a toss up - the running shot from outside 50 on the boundary sail straight through followed by a miss from 25 out set shot directly in front is the frustrating thing.

Having said all that he has only had one year (2003) when he has kicked more points than goals 33.34.

On the field he single handedly makes the entrance price worthwhile.

Off the field he is the nicest footballer I have ever met. Top bloke who really lives by the adage that nothing is too much trouble. Has always been this way.

having said that he has just had the most tackles in a season of his career this year - in fact the past three years have been his best for that stat.

Yep, have always loved watching Richo. Hasn't set a great example for the youth at Richmond at times, but is a pure enigma. Doesn't get his true worth recognised by the football media/public.

very good player. never gonna be a "great"

Wat and Tredrea will be. ******** off. Richo is already great lots of ppl say he isnt good enough to be classified great or champion but if he were to be a straighter kick at goal everyone will say different. Can kick 8 in a game but will have 15 scoring shots at goal, any player who has that amount of shots goal obviously carves it up and is unstoppable. He is superstar, champion and great.

one of the best marks in the comp and from all the easy shots he misses he has kicked over 50 goals this season. would of had 700 goals by now if he didnt have the horror runs of injury with his hamstrings and knee. He is one of my favorite players for the reason he can do anything good or bad. think he dummy spits have been played so many times that people believe that he has done it 100 times, he rarely does it. Richo is one of the best forwards in the game. give him a decent midfield and he would of kicked 80+ a year.

Circumstances have robbed him of stardom, during his peak, poor midfield delivery has robbed him and now the Tiges look like putting a solid mid together he'll be past his peak (2007), Schit out of luck.
Interesting though, i know a few Tiger fans and many dislike him immensly and i find myself defending him to them.

Very true. The year our midfield went well (all the way back in 95) Richo was on fire, we were 7-0 and then he did his knee up in Sydney :(

Are they real fans though that dislike him, like do they attend many games? All the tiger fans that i know luv Richo, one of the few players that has a crack for us over the last decade.

love the big guy to bits, his kicking(easy set shots :D) is bloody frustrating, the rest I wouldnt swap for anything. Continually top or top 2 in contested marks, over 600 career goals, champion bloke and player.

Im pretty much the same, he may miss some easy shots.. but he makes up for it when he bangs one through from 50-60 meters (eg, the one in the last few minutes Vs Hawthron)

He is one of the nicest blokes in footy, and always has time for he's supporters... You only have to look at all the kids with number "12" on their back to see how well liked he is.
Plus, he is the reason people go to the footy, we dont go to see boring lead, mark and kick players with no emotion (eg,Tarrant)

Compare Richo with Gehrig in terms of dummy spits and there is no comparaison.

Richo is Richmond.

His coaches during his prime were Walls,Gieshen and Frawley.

Frawleys timid sideways game plan makes me angry when you consider the talent that Richardson is.

Not a champion but never got the chance to be one.
