Nick Daffy has copped a fair bit of stick since the end of 1999. Some of it has been justified - most of it has been unfair.
It is time to give Daffy a break.
Nick Daffy did not play well in 2000. He lost self-belief, and then poise. He appeared to lack the confidence to take his time and think about where he was kicking the ball.
It should be remembered that in 1998 and 1999 Daffy was a very good player. In 2000 Daffy was a good player in a form slump.
The mark of a player is not whether or not he has a form slump. Even Brownlow Medalists have form slumps.
The mark of a player is how much effort he puts into overcoming a form slump.
Against Fremantle last week, Daffy did not play especially well. His decision making was only slightly better than that of some of the poor-old Dockers.
But no one in a black and gold jumper tried harder than Nick Daffy. He tried to make every contest he could and tackled with enthusiasm and vigour, if not success.
At times his tackles were too easily broken and this he should work on, but even an unsuccessful tackle slows the opposition, and if he tackles hard enough and often enough he will improve.
In short, he had a red-hot go.
With that kind of effort, he may yet overcome his form slump, and return to being a very good footballer - perhaps even a better footballer. Surely that can only be a good thing for the Richmond Football Club?
At the very least, he should be encouraged, NOT criticised.
