Ivan Maric Loves Jonathon Griffin

Heard this on way home.. hilarious stuff.

I loved the way Ivan described how they were fairly combative for the number 1 ruck position and so when Griff came back into the side he went and had a sit -down chat with him about working together, as opposed to trying to outdo each other, for the best possible outcome. Great stuff.

Ivan Maric was on 5aa last night and said he that he and Griff had improved their relationship and went on to say that it was like they were in love...

I was wondering whether he was put up to it by a team mate as a joke?

Or maybe he just loves big Griff?

It was pretty funny anyway

Sounds like team spirit is high good stuff.

Interesting that the last 2 games Ivan has started on the bench and our improvement has gone hand in hand with Griffs improvement good stuff

Hopefully big Griff's ankle isn't so bad and he can play this week. Our structure needs him to pull up for it, especially against Cox and NicNat!

Maric said in the interview that he might come up for the game.
If he doesn't come up who would you replace him with Sellar or McKernan?

I'd lean towards Sellar, He played the role well late last year but McKernan is apparently killing them down at the Panthers so it could be his time

McKernan is The Last Man Standing. Sellar is currently MIA due to a strained knee ligament (should return to action in the SANFL next week).

Is it just me who found a few aspects of that interwiew a little concerning. Not talking about loving Grif and how high the spirits are around the club cause that's obviously all good. But moreso Maric talking about how it was now good that they were working together as 1 player and being happy when the other one is playing well during a game. This kind of suggested to me that before Grif and Maric had their little chat that they were more playing for themselves and would even get down during a game if the other was doing well. I can understand them being super competetive out on the track, especially when they're vying for the same spot in the side. But you would have thought that during the game that it's all about the team doing well so when Grif starts monstering Jamar in the ruck or Maric kicks an important goal in the context of the game that the natural reaction in the context of a team sport would be to be happy that their teammate has done something that has benefitted the team.

Maybe I was reading too much into it. I mean it sounds like that's all been talked through and now the bond between the big guys is really strong and the spirit amongst the team is high. I just found a couple of the comments a bit odd.

Was a pretty funny interview though -

Cornes - "the spirit at the club must be really high at the moment , what's turned things around?"

Ivan - "Cause we're winning"

I thought it was a tad strange as well... but when you consider Mcleod vs Edwards in the dressing room for years its not a huge suprise they are not the tightest knit group in the AFL. Maybe Edwards retiring has been a catalyst for bringing the team closer together?

I wondered the same thing to. I mean Edwards and Macca were always absolute professionals out on the ground, were happy to congratulate each other for good play etc and the AFC obviously handled a situation that could have led to one of our club champions leaving the club quite well. however it must have been divisive amongst the playing group to have 2 guys who are essentially not on speaking terms in the dressing rooms, especially when they are both champions of the club. I know when there are 40 blokes in a side not everyone is going to get along but to have such an obvious rift in the playing group must have led to some tension at the club, even if it wasn't overt.

IMO this is drawing a long bow, the simple fact of the matter is that both Ivan and Griff were very competitive towards the #1 ruck position and as young men they did not handle the competitive environment so well. As they have matured so has their relationship.

The Edwards / Macca situation is a totally different set of affairs based on a totlly set of different circumstances

I think you guys are reading too much into it.
To me it came across as two young players maturing and confronting the unspoken rivalry that they held against each other. To suggest their was a rift is looking for something that isn't there.

It is no secret to any football follower that these two are competing for that number one birth and it would have been more difficult when the Crows were playing a structure with only one recognised Ruckmen.

It speaks volumes of the two young men that they were able to address the issue and come up with a successful combination.

I don't see the negatives in this story

I can understand that sentiment - they have been vying for a place in the side for most of their careers. Maric has played 63 games, Griff 36 - but they've only been in the same team 11 times.

When you consider Maric has been in the sames side as Sellar 12 times, Moran 12 times, Biglands 7 times and Matthew Clarke twice, as well as been "the" ruck in a number of games, he's had a few partnerships to work out.....

Yeah, we can't forget that until now they haven't had too many opportunities to play together in the same team without a sense of competition for one spot. I have no doubt that the fact that Griffiin is effectively playing for his life has made him and Maric closer in the sense that Griffin will do anything to keep going and Ivan would hate to see a mate go. That and I reckon Maric would've been feeling a bit worse for wear after all the ruckwork he had to do in the first half of the season, the support would be greatly appreciated.
