Was looking up some stats when i realised how similar Simon Black's and Jack Reddens first seasons are.

Jack Redden- Pick 25, 2nd Round
Simon Black- Pick 31, 2nd Round

Both are not incredibly athletic. Both are natural inside midfielders.

Simon Black First Season-
Games-9
Disposals ave- 12.22
Kicks ave- 8.11

Jack Reddens First Season-
Games-9
Disposals ave- 14.6
Kicks ave-7.7

Both have had very similar first seasons (in terms of Disposals and Kicks) in which they showed incredible potential. In both their first seasons their was another "standout" midfielder player.( Daniel Rich & Luke Power)

Jack Redden is Simon Black!

Yeah he has that toughness and class about him. Can kick goals and is a natural midfielder. Future superstar. I have said it before and I will again. Jack Redden to be the best player drafted by the lions in 2008!

Yeah...no pressure - nothing like keeping huge expectations off talented emerging players.;)

Add him to your signature then lionshine ol' mate.

If there is any room:cool:

Jack Reddan goes OK at the moment. Lot's of improvement to be found;)

Funny you should say that as I think it's Blacks true distinguishing factor. He holds himself to his own standards and doesn't give a stuff about public expectation. He's ALWAYS wanted to get better and is always looking for his own personal best game of footy. When he came to the club as a kid he asked to train against Vossy in midfield training and while getting done constantly he just kept trying and working away. If that mentality rubs off on a few of the kids around the club who knows how they'll end up. Can see the potential in many if they drive themselves to be their best.

I can see where he OP is coming from.

In Simon's first year he 'showed a bit' as a light-bodied flanker/wingman, but was no world beater. Second season he made a quantum leap and became a match-winning inside mid (as Mick Martyn well knew).

2010: Year of the Jack Attack!

So happy now that we took him over Dayne Beams (he's going to be a gun aswell). Looking forward to seeing Jack coming third in the rising star next year.

Just because I think he will be a superstar doesn't mean he is on my favourite list;)

Geez you're a tough man to please. It's good that you did not become a moderator, otherwise I'd be concerned that you'd only let a couple of us actually post on the board!

If I was to make a prediction, I'd almost agree with Lionshine's view that Redden could prove to be the best player to be draft by us at the end of 2008.

However, as with most players, I'm reluctant to push the "gun" tag too far, until he has actually achieved enough to have earned it. I think that Rich's first year performances have shown enough for us to feel confident that he'll be a very good player in the future, but he played 14 more games and had more "good or better" games than Redden for us to be able to make that judgement.

Redden's performances were very good in 2009, but I'm sure that we could have regarded Cupido as being the next M.O'Loughlin or A.McLeod, had we made a judgement at the end of season 2000.

Was Jack a bottom-ager and that is why he fell to 30 or did he play more school footy that club footy that a lot of the private schools require?

I remember thinking last year that not much was reported about him in the lead up to or even after the draft or was it more a case that he just slipped under most clubs' radar?

Either way, I am more than happy with Jack's development at this stage. It would be awesome to sit here in 10 years time and be noting the similarities between the draft that landed us 200 game mids in Power and Black and then Rich and Redden.

He was bottom aged and he was a bolter. He did play some school footy as well, I believe.

I think what really drew attention to him were some performances at u19 and senior reserves level in the SANFL.

Like most people who have contributed to this thread, I'm a big Redden fan.

Given the role envisaged for him, in and under, providing drive / clearances, it will be interesting to see how quickly he can build up physically, because he is going to need every ounce of strength he has got. If he continues to develop and improve next year, it won't be long before he starts copping tags in the same way that Black does almost every week. That's when we are going to get the best guide as to what he has to offer in the long term.

At this stage, there is a lot to like about Redden, but let's not put the 'mozz' on him or raise expectations too high. He still needs time.

Go Lions!
