Clearly it does....

He was saying you don't have to live and breath football to be a good player.

Not comparing the two.

Yes, you don't. However, Swan was a far better player whose performances on the field would dismiss commitment issues off it. Can't say the same of Watts and his efforts, hence why he's being shopped around. These are things that will be overlooked if a player is one of the best in the competition, but the sort of thing that will get you delisted for a more committed player if you're not. So, don't see it as apples to apples.

Watts just got smacked by Mahoney for being a poor role model for young players. Wow.
I called this on another site. If watts gets the all clear to be flaky inconsistent and not prepare properly then so does Petracca, Oliver, Hunt etc.

Watts just got smacked by Mahoney for being a poor role model for young players. Wow.

Wow! If they are coming out with that, they really want him gone and are trying to counter the "pweeze wet me staaaaaaay" he's giving to the media.

It also says its more than training standards.

He's got 2 years to run. But money I'd guess around $500. Maybe $450.

We don't have many really highly paid players so he's senior enough to be gifted a bit.
Assuming the pay is around what you stated you can see why Melbourne would be willing to get rid of him despite his good attributes. It sends a message to the younger players, that if you want to earn good coin you need to work your butt off and do the right things. It would also free up more cap space for Lever and other re-signings. It's the right call by the club providing the players understand this and don't get upset at the way Watts was treated.

I don't like how this is all playing out

Agreed. I get the reasons why, I just don't think its been handled well.

The initial whacks from Jones and Goody were unnecessary. Then Jack comes out to play innocent victim. Which means Mahoney has to then come out stronger to get the ledger back away form Watts.

Either he's in denial about something or its all been very poorly handled.

After the way he was treated his first few years it wouldn't surprise me if he's just checked out mentally and simply doesn't have it in him any more

Yep, all that seems to be happening with these announcements is that club and player are getting backed further into their respective corners. The way this is being handled isn't doing much for Watts' trade value, either.

In an era where player loyalty is becoming rarer and rarer, it doesn't seem right to offload a bloke who loves the club and is desperate to contribute to our future success. He's been forced to cop plenty of flack whenever we lose even when he's far from our worst player on the ground. Despite all the knocks on him for being soft and lacking effort, Wattsy is much more valuable than a second round pick. Also, as we've learnt the hard way, there's absolutely no certainty when it comes to draft picks - it's more likely Wattsy will be more beneficial to the team in the future than a potential second round draft pick. As shown by Hannan, Hunt, etc, you can always grab some absolute steals later in the draft. Keep Jack.

I just hope he is not this era's Russell Robertson if he stays !! Who I don't think you could say was a team first player on the ground.

Maybe Watts is not team driven off the ground (lack of application). That said Hawthorn let Bruest (in general) be a me first goal sneak for many years, and that did not seem to upset the winning culture they had.

If we have had three senior people at the club whack him publicly I think you can say there is definitely something wrong with what jack is doing off field.
Word has it that his efforts in the pre season boot camp up in the NT were a disgrace.

This is coming from one of the military guys running the camp

Wasn't that camp down at Anglesea or did they do two camps?
Not sure. Could be Anglesea and i have confused the camps with previous ones

I found an article but it didn't list the location, I'll take your word for it though.
Put it this way the language I used was alot more diplomatic than the language he used to describe Watts.

Fwiw I hope he stays and this is the kick up the ass he needs

Nailed it. If, at 26, and in his 9th pre season, Jack is not elite in his preparation, do we tolerate that because of his talent?

What example does that set to younger players?

My two cents: We've got Jack over a barrel. He wants to stay - declared it. His trade value is so low that we will lose if we lose him.

Keep him
Put him on notice
Play him on the wing (his goal kicking is elite in a side short of it)
Drop him immediately if he flounders

We invested 9 years in to this guy and he finally finds (really good) form in 2016-17 until his injury. Not sure what is going on there, but we need to get him right mentally. I fully agreed with the decision to drop him post-injury - in fact, I called for it earlier. We'll get nothing if we trade him, whereas he could get himself right after this shake up and produce another good season next year.

they've gone public to light a fire under Watts in the event he stays. For a player of Watts' ability/rating, to have only one top 5 b&f finish in 9 years is unacceptable. He doesn't have the right mentality. Its well past time playing the "thrown to the wolves card".

Port are interested - would the Dees be interested in Impey, Amon or Young or would they want a taller player or pick?

Straight swap for Wines will be fine. How long should we be punished for Neeld's sins? You've got the Toump you always wanted, now cough up Olly; it's the football equivalent of going back in time and killing Hitler.

This is why it's so strange for the club to be so public about their criticism of Watts - it can't be doing anything to increase his demand on the market. I'm hoping it's part of a wider strategy to give Watts a good scare to motivate him during the preseason, but even then having 3 senior people from the club come out and bag him publicly seems like a rather extreme way to do it. Either this has just been very poorly handled by the club, or else they've basically given up on Watts and getting anything of value for him (which would indicate he's done something rather more serious than being lax in training standards) and this is all just a costly way of signalling to the rest of the team what the standards are going to be under Goodwin's leadership.
