There is a growing whisper that Jack Watts could end up being the number 1 draft pick. Has been the star of the under 18's carnival and kicked 5 on the weekend against SA. Is a key position forward who is a super athlete. Played for Australia in basketball but has decided to go with football.

Brighton Grammar student so right in the nose of our recruiters.
From what I saw yesterday against sydney I think we need a KP player more than a ruckman. I know the fijian is supposed to be a freak but I feel our need is much greater for decent key position players. Recruit Warnock in PSD and get a local boy who can play CHF for 10 years. Thoughts?

Might depend on the Warnock scenario, Watts has the advantage of being a Victorian though.

The thing about NikNat though is his marketing potential, and football is still a business, and we need to sell memberships.

We will soon need a ruckman as much as key forward. White's time is almost up. I always think that top picks should be for the best player available. If that's Watts, then fair enough, but I'm pretty sure it's Natanui.

The bandwagoners will only get on and support us if we have success, not sign novelty players.
Risky balancing game.

We might not be here in a couple of years if we don't sign up the novelty players and get a few extra members on board.

We need to take the best player not who will be the most appealing to marketing departments. It will be one of Natuani Hurley Watts or Rich. All year it has been presumed we would take the fijian and most likely we will but speaking to a few people in the know they believe it is not as cut and dry as it was a month or two ago. If we took a Watts and he becomes a star then spectators and sponsors will come on board anyway. Who is more marketable? Players like Brown, Franklin Fev or players like Cox. Gun forwards draw people through the gates.

After watching the Demons this season the Demons have an obvious need for a key forward. It's the biggest onfield gap. Watt's appears to have his own freak brand of athleticism and seems to have the football skills to match. In terms of marketability, if his athletic, pack marking game translates to the senior level, that (and a bit of on field success) should take care of itself for the Dee's.

However, after watching the game at Manuka, we also have a glaring need for a big time clearance winner. We got hammered in the clearances and struggled to win contested ball. Naitanui's a clearance machine, and has averaged 4-5 hard ball gets over the last couple of years. He needs to work on his positioning around the ground, doesn't seem to get much of it outside of ruck contest situations, but that's something he should be able to pick up.

Each player represents a significant need for the club. Eagerly anticipating the last few matches of the Under 18's carnival and draft camp.

Winning games of footy will bring people to the footy and memberships, not some super high jumping black bloke with a bad haircut!

If we can take Warnock in the PSD we will have a tap ruckman who is close to being a number one ruckmen. The other advantage of Watts is that he is bottom age so he is beating players who are older and strongerthan him.

I do like Watts but my view on draft picks is take the best possible with the high ones because I haven't seen any of them play. Of course later in the year I will get excited about certain players based on various peoples opinions and select a few that I like the sound of. I actually have a pretty good record of the guy I pick to be 'my man' turning into a good player - last two years I've gone with Callan Ward and Kurt Tippett.

I like what I read about this kid. He seems very impressive.

I'm getting a little tired of reading post after post after post of how Nick Naitinui will be our saviour. He can jump and is athletic, but he is also a massive risk. Some of the best recruiters in the land have said he is project player and 2-3 years away from being a senior player.

Yes we should take the best player in the draft but we should also take a player we need. We have five (!) ruckman on our list at present, we have midfielders comming out of our ..., but we have no genuine forward options. Newton is struggling in the Sandy seconds FFS!

Who is the best kid in the draft? Not sure, I'm not a recruiter, but I do know that 22, 23 year old key forwards who can kick goals are worth more than 22, 23 year old ruckmen.

NN could be the next superstar, but he could also be the next Jarred Oakley-Nicholls. Key forwards who can take contested marks and kick goals win you games, if ruckmen did Freo would be on top of the ladder!

I was talkin to an ex-AFL player on the weekend and he said some very interesting things! He still currently plays in the WAFL and his opinion is very valid...

i asked him first about daniel rich....he said that whilst he is a gun midfielder, many players can be developed into gun midfielders...and he isnt that great to presume he will be an absolute competition standout in the AFL...that being said he is a great player and will play 200 games and will probably figure highly in a brownlow medal count at some stage in his career!

so i asked about natanui...he said that the guy is a freak!! he is an absolute freak!! he will revolutionise the game! he said that his leap is amazing, but he is a freak on the ground! he has an uncanny ability to get the ball out of packs and lock it in as well! his skills aren't terrible so they aren't really a flaw like some people say!! he catches peoples attention and only needs 10 touches to be BOG!! he should go on to win 2 or 3 brownlow medals, possibly more!!

he is always listed in Swan District's best players, playing against men who have played the game forever, and they are the second best team in the WAFL...for him to be in the best players in a genuine premiership contender, all credit to him!!

if any team that has the number 1 pick overlooks natanui they are just plain stupid....in 5 years he will be THE superstar of the comp and his career could be anything....Melbourne most certainly need this!!!

Im not saying that Jack Watts isnt the best CHF, but have a look out for young bloke named Mitch Brown from Sandy Dragons. His first game for them this Saturday and he will become a serious top 10 chance when the draft comes along.

Apparently melbourne is very intereted in Lewis Johnston from S.A....(with our second pick)

And i would just like to say that Jack Watts is very over rated on BF, And there is no chance he will go at pick #1.
