Des Tuddenham is another one who got into trouble and actually went to jail for receiving stolen tyres. Much, much more serious than what James Hird has allegedly done. Why not kick him out as well?

Some of the posters here need to get some perspective and take a long, cold shower.

If that's what he did I would say it was more along the lines of embezzlement.

And funnily enough sherb, that's exactly what he was charged with.

Not great, that's for sure. But really just a stupid and relatively minor teenage mistake.

No where near the same, actually it's embarrasing watching someone trying it on

Agreed. Exaggerated for effect because the truth isn't nearly shocking enough.

I see. Dog football players are all good when they are on your side.

Got it.
At least Balme hit him and manned up, not like this ponce would be actor who had three or four days to get his head right and do the correct thing at the tribunal.

What Balme done was wrong, but in the heat of the moment he wasn't Robinson Crusoe in belting blokes on the field.

Wait, what? Crimes against property are in no way more serious than crimes against the person, despite what our sometimes backwards justice system might tell you. James Hird threatened the health of 38 young men, that's far more serious than receiving some stolen tyres.

4 of the greatest players of the last 20 years have disgraced themselves in the publics eye. Ablett, Carey, Cousins and now Hird. What can we read into that? All treated as heroes who were allowed to do as they liked.

Yup, receiving stolen goods is clearly worse than shooting up your team with unknown and unfit for human use drugs. Clearly.

Just when you think it can't get any more stupid .. BANG! You find out you're wrong.

As is embezzlement and staging in a game, according to another poster.

Or at least the equivalent.

Amazing.......

Coaching Essendon sure does strange things to people, doesn't it? :D

Perhaps they should introduce an official HOF asterisk.

Anyway, he was charged with disrepute as a player and got in. I guess it will depend on what actually comes out of all of this.

David Dench was another one. Jailed over a multi-million dollar fraud. Inducted in 2000.

The difference here for mine is impact on the game. Hird was given HOF recognition for his contribution to the game, not for anything he did outside of it. In the same sense, such recognition should only be called into question when what's being considered is actually relevant to this contribution.

If what's on that charge sheet is proven and he was neck deep in heading a regime that administered prohibited or potentially harmful substances that results in players being sanctioned, it's bloody hard to argue that it doesn't counterbalance the contribution for which he is recognised.

Hird is also featured in the Australian Sports Museum at the MCG, or at least he was a couple of years ago when I visited. There is a holographic image of him in a mocked up locker room talking about his love for the game etc. I wonder if that is still there and if so might need an overhaul. It was actually reasonably well done at the time but it might not be appropriate for this time. Probably not the hologram you want representing the game right now.

On a more frivolous note, perhaps the hologram could take over coaching the team for a while (having a Red Dwarf moment. Or in this case Red and Black Dwarf).

I just had an image of Hird imploring a rubbish bin to "Find Obi-Wan, only he can save us..."

So by that logic Michael Hurley is a much worse person than James Hird?

Receiving stolen tyres is much much more serious than putting your own players' health, careers and livelihoods at risk?

Essendon board HAHA.
I have never in my life seen such delusion in one place. Including that one time I went to church when I was 10.

Classy.

Never did anything illegal until after he left Collingwood for Essendon, so you guys ruined him as well.

What do you call steeling cheques from a bank and cashing them with forged signatures? You dont need a gun to be a bank robber.

There is no need to steal cheques.

Just get a few dodgy pharmacists and pen pushers to make up the forgeries.
