All of them were qualified and carefully worded, like trying to avoid any possible way to be sued. Never seems to be speaking openly and honestly.

People pick up on that.
I'd say you just don't want to accept his apologies as it let's you stay up on your pedestal.

It's a ****ing sport, do you want him stoned in the town centre to satisfy you?

Why do I get the impression you are talking an enormous amount of pleasure in this situation?

Everything before this incident should be forgotten due to the outcome he felt the need to take. You don't have to forgive but showing some empathy would be nice.

"I don't feel like a victim myself but those 34 players are victims of this situation, a situation that, at the first instance, is the responsibility of the Essendon football club. The football club and as a part that I had in it, has to put up its hand and say we made mistakes."

"I have a level of responsibility in that. I should have known more. I should have done more when the opportunity came. I feel extremely guilty for that and bad for that. I can only apologise for that. I made decisions in real time that in hindsight, I think were wrong."

"I do take a level of responsibility for what happened in our football club in 2012. There's a level of responsibility you have as a senior coach. The senior coach is responsible for a lot of things at a football club. There were things that went on that shouldn't have happened last year. As senior coach I have to take some responsibility for what happened and not doing more to stop it."

Good enough?

Yes, it's an apology but the weasel words like "There's a level of responsibility you have as a senior coach", "I take a level of responsibility" and "I have to take some responsibility" are weak. He doesn't actively take responsibility for his actions with those words, the taking of responsibility is thrust upon him.

I think a proper apology from him (the person that invited in The Weapon and Dank, the person that politically pushed Reed out of the picture, the person kept running in the courts and denying responsibility long after the club gave up) would be to simply say, "I did it. It was wrong. I'm sorry." No weasel words.

He was a leader and heart of the club. Sometimes leadership is needed in the bad times. Sometimes leadership means giving up what you've got so that other can go on. I simply think he failed the test.

I hope he recovers from whatever has happened. Every kind hearted person should. And I also hope he finds the strength to one day come clean.

Find it a bit annoying that Essendon supporters are blaming other supporters and the media for what happened to hird. While sad at the end of the day him and Essendon still made huge errors and deserved the scrutiny they received at the time. Hope he recovers

I'm not an Essendon supporter and I blame (to a degree) social media and the media in general. Could've been handled better but the people who'll never let this go and continuously attack Hird are pathetic.

Can anyone cut and paste the age and Herald Sun articles???

How much responsibility should he take exactly? Unlike Dank, he was not charged by ASADA and did not receive a life ban from the AFL. Hird played his role in the saga, got punished for it, paid his penance, apologised for his mistakes, and then walked away from the game when the club lost faith in his coaching ability. I'm really not sure what more you want from him.

The only people he owes a direct apology to are the players and their families, and he has done that in private no doubt.

Like I said, being vile is exactly that. But when someone like Hird has polarized so many people and opinions, and shown little to no remorse, it's difficult to say poor Jimmy, lets feel sorry for him (his attempt being unsuccessful playing a big part of this, had it been successful all bets are off). The usual suspects backed by the usual protection preaching about St Jimmy and bringing up the media and AFL crap again is also going to inflame. It's little surprise that this results in a Hawks/Cats type Tish fight on here.

Of course most humans feel sorry for his children and anyone else hurt by this, but yet again it's HIS actions being defended and excused.
That also is going to get noses out of joint, I know it did mine. I could not agree more about common decency though.

What a bunch of crap.

Really? All I have read of late is the whole Essendon players returning and how fantastic it is. Can't say I see much media criticism of Essendon these days

It is amusing that this thread has become the arena to debate media shaming. It's a hard one. He ****ed up big time in footy, no doubt about that. But does a guy who just really screwed up in his place of work deserve the scrutiny? We are so quick as the viewing public to dehumanize anyone who screws up.

I think there is a difference between screwing up and deliberately cheating. I felt bad for Rhyce Shaw because for years Collingwood fans had a go at him for a major stuff up he made in an important match but ultimately that stuff up was a mistake. Shaw did not maliciously stuff up in order to screw with Collingwood. Cheating though, that implies a certain amount of planning, of deliberate action. Most people don't accidentally cheat, though in saying that it does sometimes happen.

Today on bigfooty's word of the day:
"Health scare" What an anodyne term that is.

And moving on...
You can't help but wander what sort of comments he would get from passers by in his day to day life. Everyone would have their limits
Yeah I reckon the good people of Toorak would leave him more or less alone actually.

so, just don't leave your suburb.....cool
He's a multimillionaire, he's not hanging around the local RSL with the sort of deadshits that hang crap on him here.

I'd be surprised if he copped any more rubbish than the average footy player.
