Unless you yourself have had "half the country telling me what a piece of shit I am, to my kids, my wife and friends all day, everyday", you can't empathise either.
You can sympathise, but not empathise.

Material wealth and/or first class education provides far more options for people in such situations.
The vast majority of people at the end of their tether don't have anywhere near the options available to them as jimmy does.
It's sad he's there- but relatively speaking, he's well placed to crawl back out of the hole.

Empathy doesn't mean you have to experience the exact same scenario, only that you can project yourself into that scenario and understand the other parties emotional position. Sympathy simply requires you to feel sorry for someone else's scenario without any self reflection.

Rather than facing up to what happened, he made the selfish decision to put himself before the EFC and the 34 players by spending the better part of two years trying to argue semantics in court in the hope that he could get the case dismissed against him on a technicality.
Yeah, he's a real dick for using his own money to pursue legal avenues that are available to him under our legal system. Let's just also ignore that he neglected to further challenge the ruling by taking it to the High Court in the best interests of the players.

It doesn't matter man, you're kicking a man while he's down, pathetic.

Yes all of that is well and good, and perfectly valid.

Personally though, I'll be saving my sympathy for the countless poor sods who are just as adrift as jimmy in life... but don't have the following:
*millions of dollars in toorak;
*first class education;
*deep support network;
*problems they didn't create, exacerbate, and prolong themselves;
*systemic socioeconomic advantage of being a white boy in the 2nd richest country per capita on the planet.

Jimmy's obviously doing it tough which is sad..... but lots of people are doing it far tougher, with far less, than the Ben Cousins and James Hird's of the world.

Not an argument.

I thought you SJW types would be understanding of mental health issues? Apparently not

Yeah, the stuff he worked hard for should definitely excuse him from having any type of emotion.

It's literally tumblr in one post

Anyone seen the movie concussion? And the effects of cte on the brain

Taken from Wikipedia :
During round 6 in the 2002 AFL season,James Hird suffered a facial injury after a collision with team mate Mark McVeigh during a match between Essendon and Fremantle which resulted in several bone fractures, Hird's injuries were compared to injuries seen in motor-car accidents.[2]

Most of the severe mental injuries associated with AFL are developed later in life when the player has retired from the AFL; these injuries are a result of heavy contact to the player's head. From one hundred cases of concussion being reviewed, ninety seven of these involved direct contact to the head with majority of the contact coming from the head, upper body or upper limbs of the other player.[4] Evidence suggests that some negative effects of concussion on cognitive and motor function may continue to harm the player many years after the initial injury; some research also links clinical depression to contact related concussion.[5]

That collision was nasty.

disagree with the idea that james would have come out the other end with hard-won respect had he 'owned up', admitted culpability, took his licks, etc. this is imagined only after watching someone who supposedly didn't show it. i can't see how people who despised him would have despised him any less if he admitted fault in a manner they prefer. the die was cast and he was due for ignominy no matter what he said. i find the whole 'i'd respect him more if he just told everyone he did it' a bit disingenuous to be honest.

in any case, that feels all rather secondary and not really that important. it's not hard to imagine it causing some strain. i don't doubt he's had some low moments in the past 3-4 years. if he was released as reported, i hope there's been no lasting effects, there are many types of self-harm but ones involving medication (or similar) can do just that.

I find it difficult to feel sorry for him but I honestly do hope he gets the help he needs. He's got a family, hopefully he focuses on that and the footy world and the media moves on from Hird and everything and everyone can go back to being healthy.

As selfish as it sounds I don't think I can handle another year dominated by Hird and his struggles, and by the sounds of it I don't think he could either. Footy and Hird need to part ways for the health of both for quite sometime imo

Suicide is the biggest killer of men aged 18-45 in Australia, and a ton of bigfooty posters would be struggling with depression and what not. Do yourself, your family and your friends a favour and call the above numbers.

Correct.

And for someone who's been there we don't get to go straight to a mental health facility after hospitalisation. We have to wait for an appointment for a month before we can see a professional about it.

All i know from reading this thread is that society has a long way to go in order to rid the world's simpletons who would pretend to know the plight of another man's struggles. I don't know James but i know enough to know he deserves some respect and compassion. Society makes me sick at times.

Because Big Footy is a true reflection of society and all.

Hopefully he will pull through and come out the other side. You'd imagine this will have hit his kids and close family in particular for six. Good luck to him.

That's not how empathy works, it's not an experience related quality. It's the ability to put yourself in somebody else's situation.

It's hard not too look back and think if they had just taken their punishment like cronulla did then this chain of events wouldn't have even started

Hird would still be called a drug cheat by every ******** that passed him, without a single thought about his well-being.

It doesn't matter man, you're kicking a man while he's down, pathetic.
And it is very irresponsible to infer some kind of culpability (bringing it all on himself etc) for a person at the time shortly after he has attempted suicide. I sure hope no one in a bad place reads this thread. I wouldn't recommend reading it.

Mate people don't care about a lot of things that often. Had it dissappeared quickly it would be over 3 years since it was passed and the next popular story would have taken over

This probably isn't the appropriate place for me to discuss this, you wouldn't wish this upon your worst enemy
