Also, am I missing something. What's the population difference between Hobart and Geelong?

Geelong is slightly more populated. When you take in the surrounding surf coast areas it would be a bit more. However, Geelong is also only a 45 minute drive from Melbourne on a good day.

Has Sicily started one of our new club rivalries? Long term $$$ forecasted for rivalry rounds.

Drip feed the anger šŸ˜‚

Maybe the Tassie side asked him to do it. They won't have a single rivalry when they get into the comp - even GWS and Gold Coast had confected rivalries with the Swans/Lions. Maybe this is the start of a war of words between us and the Devils to build up some rivalry.

All about the new state banter, get Breust to come out and say he would never live in tassie šŸ˜‚

Majority of our players have moved bayside, so no issue
Holy mother of false equivalence Batman! It's almost 30x times the distance, man.

What I heard was that players didn't want to live in Hobart because it was a long way from amenities such as concert venues, the international airport and other attractions of a larger city. If players elect to live nearby Dingley they won't have easy access to those amenities either. From Hobart they will catch a plane to Melbourne. The physical distance is not the issue. Sure the travel time from Hobart will still be greater but it is not prohibitive and Hobart has its compensations. I don't think player retention will be as big an issue as people are making out. Every club has to deal with a "go home" factor but that is more about missing family and friends than big city attractions. GWS has lost plenty of players despite being in the most glamorous and well connected city in the country.

Dingley is less than 30Kms from the city as a training base

Players arn't moving to Dingley though either

They are moving to Brighton, Elwood, Caulfield which are all within 15KMs of the city, they are staying inner east/bayside

Essendon players dont live in Tullamarine, Bulldogs players dont live in Footscray, Melbourne players dont live in Casey and that 55 KMS from the CBD

Multiple clubs apart from Richmond and Collingwood dont have central training bases and have no issue with retention

This is just a strange post with no awareness of Melbourne or willfully ignorant

Do you live in Melbourne? Being based in Dingley doesn't mean they have to live in Dingley. They've all got access to, and most can afford to live in some of the nicest neighbourhoods in Melbourne. Even if they did live in Dingley they'd be half an hour to an hour away (at most) from pretty much anything they'd need, from surfing to concert venues.

As far as flying goes, Melbourne airport is just a frustration we all have to live with.

Better yet, let's get Huddo to come out and say he'd never live in Tassie.

You know that we don't use horse and buggies in Melbourne any more, right? I like to mock the outer suburbs as much as the next inner-city snob - but good lord, cars and roads exist.

I see Jai around Elsternwick a fair bit.

Travel isn't too big an issue I would have thought.

A-League is an interesting one. Jamie Maclaren lives in Sunbury, but has daily training at Casey.

Dingley isn't going to be a problem. Can't believe it gets as much discussion as it does

Lake went to Waverley every day while living in Caroline Springs - that commute would have done my head in.

Simples, one has a history of incestuous behaviour and inbreeding.

The other one is in Tasmania

Agreed, Elsternwick to Dingley is not a bad drive, especially as your heading against traffic for the most part.

Might've been correct in what he said but, as club captain, incredibly immature to say it, given the sponsorship status.

I just wish he'd paraphrased the claasic quote from (the original English version of) House of Cards:
"You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment!"

Ah James... Why have you put me in this predicement. I'm always Hawthorn, but a proud Tasmanian.

Pretty ordinary, but could tell it was toungue in cheek stuff, so will let it slide. :D

Being a proud Tasmanian i am not overly fussed with Sis comments but then again i am not the clubs major sponsor.

Tassie is not for everyone but i do love being able to drive for an hour and actually travel somewhere.

also the clean air is kind of nice

Sure things close early but that's the trade off with having a small population.

Max Gawn lives in Cranbourne, just near casey fields - I see him regularly at my local shops

Players are leaving Gold Coast and West Sydney.......Tassie has no chance
Difference is Tassie has a soul.

I reckon we'll see GWS relocated to Canberra in the not too distant future.

I think James is probably right in that this would be a view shared by plenty of younger players, however, once blokes have families and get a bit older, there would be plenty of pluses with being based down there. Plus it being a footballing state with a rich history and a real soul, I think theyā€™ll be better placed than the other expansion clubs. Obviously not for everyone, but it doesnā€™t need to be.
