Will be interesting to see how he goes..
He's got enormous potential.. Kids like this that show glimpses of superstardom early on inevitably make something of it.
Hard to really judge where he's at, he had a pretty inconsistent start and has never really looked like a best 22 certainty.. Some of the previous generation of recruits, guys like Beams, Sidey, Blair all pretty much cemented positions from their first few games. Elliot still on the fringe, he will have to really break out in a big way to secure a spot.. Can't quite tell if he can do that yet or not.
Certainly cfc media and pr are pushing him in to the limelight a bit, he often gets put up for interviews, I think that kinda thing helps players enormously. The more they see themselves in the limelight, the more they believe in themselves as a legit afl star.

But it's excellent to hear that Elliott has been working on his running patterns and crumbing skills, which means hopefully we'll see him get more of the ball as well as kick a few crumbing goals. (that was one area last year where he didn't have any impact) He already has that great defensive mindset so this feels like the final piece in the puzzle; to be dangerous around the packs in the same way that all the good small forwards are.
I agree with you here, this is definitely what we need more of from him. He did show glimpses in the VFL with ball in hand; evasiveness, pace and spatial awareness... and he can finish nicely most of the time. The problem was he was still getting the ball through the air, not by hoovering up the loose ball or crumbing from front and centre. If it's an ability that can be learnt I'd give him as good a chance as any, because he does seem very dedicated. There's a lot to like but at AFL level, he's mostly highlights (some of them incomplete marking attempts, apparently!) and not much else at this stage. Actually, that's a bit unfair because his defensive acts are great, so maybe view that last statement in terms of his offensive capacity.

Yeah that's what I was alluding to. Dids and Krak may not recapture top form and I see Elliott's scope for improvement as being pretty big.
Yeah. I hope you are wrong, but there is a reasonable chance you may be right.

We need strong contributions from Dids AND Krak if we are going to win the flag this year.

Agreed...I felt last year he had all the defensive attributes and showed a pretty good set of hands.

But ultimately someone at his height has to be a quick crumbing forward. Unless he starts hitting the scoreboard and also getting under the packs, his value won't be high because he won't demand a good opponent.

The difference is a guy like Macaffer puts defensive pressure, but can also play on a dangerous defender and keep them accountable. Even Sinclair did a good job on Suckling in the finals last year.

But Elliot has all the attributes to become a complete player. The hunger is there, and he is skillful and quick. Just needs to make more contests and read the play better. Early signs from this year are good.

Just further, Elliot fits within our 'midget brigade' which is becoming increasingly bigger.

I don't know how many of Blair, Elliot, Sinclair, Kennedy etc we can carry in a side if we want to compete against the big bodied sides like Sydney and West Coast and Hawthorn.

Therefore, he needs more strings to his bow. The difference will be if he can kick goals.

I like him. I can envision him in a few years being introduced into the midfield for a little bit of a run.

I've been calling for a long time that Jamie will be an incredible player if he starts kicking goals. Same goes for Sinclair. I made mention of both in my match preview this week and the fact they need to kick goals.

7 goals between them was a great return. In particular Elliott is the complete package and could become anything from here.

You are right when you claim that it is really difficult to gauge his progress, but his improvement is tangible. We should not forget that game against West Coast last year when we were down, and he stood up and took several really important contested overhead grabs to give us some momentum. I think by that stage he had only played less than 5 games.

Good call Dave, but Sinclair faces a bit more of an uphill task having to justify his selection each week. I personally really enjoy his style and tenacity, but the average fan generally only equates success in the forward line with the return of regular goals - misguided I know.

You are right...but I think they are working well in tandem at the moment.

Our game is so reliant on forward pressure because we still get exposed one out. Therefore, Sinclair's defensive skills are just vital.

He needs to kick goals...no doubt about it. But if he gets a goal a game I'm happy.

He had 5 tackles yesterday, which adds to the 8 he had last week.

Also don't count out Macaffers 6 tackles...most of which came in the 2nd half.

Sinkers should have had 4-5 as well. If he can clean up his finishing we will be boasting one of the best small forward combo's in a couple of years to come...They need more consistency and it should come.

The positive with sinclair is he is getting lots of shots at goal, whilst providing great pressure and being decent around the ground. If he ever managers to fix his finishing he has great potential. Until then he has to fight for his spot as missing 2-3 shots every week hurts the team

Congrats to "Billy" Elliot for that great game. Now he has the feel for the goals lets hope we see many more from the lad. One thing he (and seemingly all of our young recruits) does have is character and along with the willingness to learn they all have a great chance to be very successful pies players for a long time.
Once again, well done Billy.

Elliott was great on sunday and Sinclair has to tidy up his kicking for goal,I think we need both in there at this stage for tackling and pressure they both bring.
I think Elliott is in the team to stay and Sinclair could joined him if he tidies up a few aspects of his game namely his finishing, his disposal by foot use to leave a lot to be desired but he is over coming that.
Ps if Sinclair had kicked a goal instead of out of bounds when Dyer had 3 bounces from centre wing we would all be praising him and it deserved a great finish after Dyer,s great work.

Is this occurring strictly in your imagination?

Could be my imagination but I am sure there were 2 kicks to separate players in the North match which led to goals by Cloke and 1 other player.
Seemingly unlike you I think his general disposal by foot is getting better I remember last season his kicking in general was bad but his field kicking is improving even if he is a liabilty from 25.

The passes to Cloke and the other player were delivered with good precision from 40 to 45 mtrs away and I would describe that as good disposal.

Fair enough, the thing is I recall his passing to forwards last year as being intermittently either mediocre or brilliant. So in my mind nothing has changed there. And his kicking for goal while on the run is still utterly horrid, so nothing's changed there either.

I'm at the point where I think we should try to develop him in another role. He has great speed, great hands, is a terrific tackler... tagger?

Not the worst idea, but I'm not sure he'd be smart enough around stoppages & perhaps some of the bigger mids could push him off a bit too easily..

Either way I like Mooney as a medium/long term replacement for him, his pressure is probably as good (if not better) and his offensive game seems to be improving at a reasonable rate.
