Very interesting view on patriotism and identity at the AO right now.

Kokkinakis’s Spartan shorts and Greek flags in his supporter group indicate his loyalty, but then you’ve got the Fanatics (the bogan supporter group) waving the Australian flag and doing their Aussie Oi Oi Oi chanting the crowds looking a bit embarrassing. Most of the crowd (who are mostly Australian) aren’t flag waving. Certainly less Australian flags at this game then some other supporters (Serbs, Italians, Chinese, Croatian supporter groups are much more noticeable).

Apparently the AO will “acknowledge Australia Day” this year but it’ll probably be incredibly muted, maybe an ex AOTY to give a 5 minute speech on unity or something.

Whatever date it’s moved to we will see the same protests and same message that we should all be deeply ashamed of our history and we are all horrible white people.

Who's telling us to be deeply ashamed? The way I see it it's more about understanding past wrongs so that we treat people better going forward. And that involves being respectful of the perspective many First Nations people have on January 26.

I hate to break Godwin’s law but that’s how the Holocaust is remembered in Germany. There’s no idolation or worship from that period and all school kids and society is educate in what happened and why it happened.

It’s not to blame the current generation or make them feel guilty, just to keep the consciousness of the event in culture.

In Australia we have a lot of people who still vehemently deny there was even a genocide, and those who just want to “move on and forget about it” without acknowledging what happened. They love to honour the symbols (Jan 26 and Union Jack on the flag) that have a part to play in those events. Any time indigenous people speak up they are told to shut up and respect what the British did for them.

There's a very simple way to get broad support for a new national day, even if it's in the deep dark of winter. Move the date while agreeing to create a new public holiday sometime in Jan/Feb. 'Agree to move the date and we'll give you another day off' is a guaranteed vote winner. Australia is a little underdone with just 10 public holidays for most states, with many other countries having 11 or 12.

Depends which party adopts this (personally like it).
