The Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 became law on 26 January 1949. The Act created Australian citizenship and the rules for gaining it. All residents born in Australia automatically became citizens.

So that anniversary has significance for citizenship ceremonies.

I was wondering when someone would bring that argument that has done the rounds on social media for a while.

Firstly - you think out of 365 days of the year they accidentally chose the arrival of the first fleet as the date that act came into effect? A 1 in 365 chance eh?

Also lots of things that act didn’t change. Passports were still labelled “British Passports” until 1967. Australian citizens were also dual British subjects until 1969. Until 1984 non Australian all British subjects still had voting rights in Australia, and is still grandfathered for those Brits who had the right before 1984. Indigenous Australians didn’t have full voting rights until 1977.

The Act started the concept of citizenship but it still wasnt fully applied for a long time. And with pre 1984 Brits still having voting rights it still isn’t.

Plus I bet a “patriot” like yourself would be aware we already celebrate citizenship on the 17th of September as Citizenship Day, right?

I don't think this is widespread sentiment, you may think so from your personal experiences. However, unless you've received this ignorance from 100's of 1000's personally then you can't definitively state that this is the mindset by and large.

I can't state the other way either, except to say by my experience with strangers the average Jan and Joe don't have a punch down attitude on indigenous people, reckon society would look a lot worse if it were the case.

I never said it was widespread I said, 'there were more than an ignorant few'. I have often said most people get it but there are far more than you realise who are just racist flogs. Yes, there are thousands of cases over the years I could count. Is there any other way to truly judge and understand racism against Aboriginals than personal experience?
