Rubbish,
You want to be sad and mourn and look back , others want to be happy and celebrate what’s good about country ..

That’s the great part of Australia you can do either

Actually what he's upset about is people wanting to rewrite history and think the past is irrelevant, you can do both if you decide that both views are equally as important but many choose to dismiss the concerns and grievances of the indigenous community because they don't want to understand it. You seem like that sort judging by your views. There not against having a national day which seems to be getting lost in this debate, there against the specific date.

No one is trying to rewrite history we acknowledge that what happened in the past was unfathomable and abhorrent. But current day Australians bare no responsibility to past happenings.
Most including me are sympathetic to the past but also proud of the country we are. the left won’t allow you to feel proud to be Australian automatically labelling you a racist.
Whatever your mindset is tomorrow I hope everyone finds their inner peace.

We need to imagine what can be, unburdened by what has been.

It's more about the tune. You need something uplifting. The lyrics can be generic national anthem nonsense about the homeland, uniting against a foreign foe, some event in history.
Brazil is not bad.

There’s a perfect example why “passionate nationalism” is a silly concept.

That day (WC semi final 2014) Brazilians snag their anthem with fervour and gusto. The Germans were motionless and bored and most of them (especially the non ethnic Germans who didn’t sing at all).

Then we watched as the “proud patriotic” Brazilian were totally demolished by the “unpatriotic” Germans. Completely annihilated on the field.

“Passion” is meaningless - “competence” rules supreme.

To some extent that speaks to Australia's lack of maturation as a state - similar to our military holiday being a commemoration of us invading another country, which is pretty unusual in military days of commemoration around the world.

Totally agree. A British flag, a national day commemorating the actions of British people, a British head of state, British person on the coins, half the organisations in the country prefixed with Royal and a foreign policy outsourced to Washington.

And not just commemoration of an invasion, an invasion of a nation at the behest of the British empire against a people that had never threatened Australia, and then Australia was defeated so badly they retreated and abandoned the battlefield in the middle of the night.

Is that what we are allowed to remember when they say “Lest We Forget”……

Only 50% in favour of the national day? That’s fairly low, yanks wouldn’t be that low with July 4 or other events.

Went for a walk outside today in the city along the river in the park in front of all the war monuments and Australian flagpoles. Lots of people out and about enjoying the start of the long weekend, and Even though the actual day is tomorrow this is the start of the weekend, and did not see a single Australian flag or person in flag clothing.

Not a single one……,

52% not 50%, and that is technically a majority.

Actually that was for legislation of the date… support is as below - IMG_3275.JPG

I love this idea that to be in support you have to have Australia flags tattoos or clothing showing…
It’s not North Korea. You don’t have to be forced into clothing to be patriotic

So first you complain that flag waving and on clothes is symbolic of boganism and now you still complain when you can't find anything. Do you know what you actually want?

The country isn’t a first come first served arrangement like a sizzler….

No one group of people has any greater say than any other of what gets celebrated and what doesn’t..

Who said anything about anyone having a greater say? The poster I responded to said that the issue of when to celebrate Australia Day is "settled", which completely disregards the opinions of indigenous people who have occupied this land far longer than you or I.

I agree with your premise that no one group of people has any greater say. It would be nice if they meant it though.

I question how effective the invasion day protests actually have been. It's clear that it has not swayed the stance of the major parties and public opinion is in the majority for not changing the date.
I would argue differently. There have always been protests around Australia Day but the big one growing up was the republic debate. Now that I am older, celebrating the date the English settled Australia seems rather inconsiderate of our indigenous population, many of whom still suffer the effects of discriminatory policy of the 1900's. While I personally don't like the term 'Invasion Day', I understand why that term is used because, like everything these days, shock and awe is far more effective at getting your message across than relying on people to think about others. These protests are arguably more relevant than the republic movement these days.

Australia day is pretty big where I live, the town has always had multiple events on throughout the day.

81% of the nations lives in urban areas

Yeah absolutely no surprise that rural areas are more nationalist, less migrants, more Anglo, more conservative, totally unsurprising

January 26th is at best called “settlement day”, or more accurately “invasion day” (yes armed British troops entered the land for the purpose of conquest and occupation, what an invasion is).

“Australia Day” should correctly be January 1st that’s when the nation of Australia came into being. I don’t understand why so many “patriots” have difficulty understanding that concept.

I wasn’t complaining. I was proud the citizens of our great multicultural urban areas have dispensed with silly Union Jack flag waving. It’s awesome to see.

If rural areas continue waving the silly Union Jack - alright, there’s a reason house prices are lower in the bush. No one wants to live among people like that and would rather in more multicultural less “patriot” areas of the country.

It gives the rent a crowd something to do, hopefully get themselves on tv and hear Lidia Thorpe talk gibberish into a microphone about some war she wants and stuff that will never happen.

There’s better ways to spend a day but hey each to their own.

Such a typical ill informed response.
I'll give GoRoyals this one. Lydia Thorpe is a horrible representative for indigenous people and the sooner she is removed from the public conscience, the better.

The sovereignty debate is a waste of time and energy for all parties involved. While I support the recognition and inclusion of indigenous people and culture, and wish for better outcomes for indigenous people in Australia, sovereignty is not something that should be entertained. One country, one constitution, one set of laws. Respect differences in culture by all means, and include at every opportunity where practical, but sovereignty is not the answer.

Here we go. Only a matter of time before the woke inner city elites started lecturing the country folk about what’s good for them .

Bit like the climate change debate.. do something but don’t put any solar panels or wind propellers in our area… let the country people have to look at them

You know you can do both. Celebrate and be thankful for the country we have, but have some compassion or be respectful for those who had their world, not just turned upside down, but pretty much devastated as a result the British landing here.

“Wah wah wah the inner city elites hurt my feelings”

I never understood why “inner city elite” is a negative descriptor. The inner cities are more expensive to live in, therefore those with higher incomes choose to live there, you usually get more income by being more educated and intelligent.

Those who have gained that advantage choose to live in the inner city not the bush. It’s the free market at work.

And people in the inner city have as much right to voice their opinion as the feral bush chook rednecks.

And that is where you have it completely wrong. We don't want to look back. We want to move forward. To move forward people need to understand where we have been. I have said many times; it is great that people want tp celebrate. It is up to them what they what to take from the day. We need to look back so we can learn from the past. It is your antagonistic comments such as 'rent a crowd' that out you for who you are. Can see through you from a mile away.
