So name all the other apparent feasible alternates then.
Oh thanks. Why don't you name the ones that aren't feasible.

I liked the suggestion of May 8th [....'M8 Day'?]
How about 12th - 15th Jan, not too close to the 26th or New Year's Day.
Feb between 7th and 20th so not close to the 26th or Labour Day
March 24
Doesn't bother me if it was in winter but probably wouldn't be popular
Sept 1 to 15 so not too close to the GF
Nov 18 to 7 Dec

Are people really that precious? Thats ****ed up if thats the case, and makes me lose faith in humanity a bit. "I don't want to change something that is genuinely traumatising to a large cohort of people, because they protest about it" surely people aren't that stupid and selfish, or am I underestimating the ineptitude of some humans.

What's the alternative to protesting? First Peoples have almost zero political power. How else will it change? I don't know why a govenrment can't just make the change without consultation. I don't remember any consultation in 1994 when it first became a national day.

Anyway, I'm off to the rally. Come and join us BF

Unfortunately they are.

While they could do it without caring about the fallout, I think you need to take people on a short journey where no one else thinks they have won or lost. Crazy I know but that's the best chance.

IF we get a popular well spoken Prime Minister who can get a good message accross itvstands a chance. Unfortunately nieher side of politics have that at the moment.

3.8% of people per the last census is not a large cohort and would be minus many to which the date is not triggering… the outraged on behalf of group are irrelevant .

I've never heard this one before. That's not bad. I could think of worse things to do than going to the footy on the national day.

If you believe that those of us celebrating Australia Day is the fringe minority you need to get out more.
I live on the coast. Go for a drive to every beach, picnic area, lake, river, stream. People everywhere enjoying the freedoms that this country provides. If you want to live in a dark room sipping soy lattes go for it
He’s deluded as are the rest of the activists whilst the majority of Australians are enjoying the day these twats will be portrayed in the media tonight as the absolute losers they are pretending to give a shit about the indigenous people.

So showing the flag or on clothing is a sign of the bogan but that cringeworthy suggestion is ok?

It's an idea. Certainly a better option than sticking your head in the sand.

I LOLed at "the colony will fall" on the vandalised statue. It's highly amusing that the tantruming toddler that did that thinks that act had any positive impact for their cause.

Perhaps they would of likened being colonized by China or Indonesia or much more violent colonials?

Australia is a massive what if.

The only ones with their head in the sand are those vandalising and pointlessly marching…

Unless you mean those celebrating at the beach

You just may have hit on the solution.
Let the AFL decide on the date and it can be celebrated with a MCG game between Collingwood and either Essendon or Carlton.
Never to miss an opportunity, the AFL.

I'm gonna take the kids for a ride this morning, then we will be having a family bbq tonight. Similarly, absolutely no guilt!

Enjoy the day off everyone, regardless of your persuasions!
I'm going to briefly reflect on how this great country welcomed my family (the lucky ones that made it) in the early 90s as refugees escaping genocide in the Balkans, then have a few frothies and a BBQ.

You do realise that many of the issues impacting indigenous people today in areas such as health, wealth, education and crime stem from the stolen generation years, policy created, implemented and benefiting European Australians, and that celebrating the arrival of European Australians might not be something indigenous people want to celebrate, right?

A valid comparison might be between life as it was for the thousands of years before Europeans arrived and what we have now. Aboriginal people share in the benefits of health, life expectancy, wealth, education, entertainment, sport, democracy, electricity, the internet, transport, reliable food and water, law and order, women's rights, gay rights, diversity of immigrant cultures. There are so many reasons to celebrate.

Many people identifying as Aboriginal are mixed race with some having more European ancestors than indigenous. But there seems to be certain cachet in identifying only as Aboriginal. Did their European ancestors invade and oppress their indigenous ancestors?

Its the year 3500 AD are we still going to be saying sorry every year?
If we said a heartfelt sorry and backed it up with real meaningful measures that have been proven to make a powerful difference to the lives of the indigenous community - rather than the current socialism-for-big-corporations-and-the-rich, free-market-for-the-marginalised system which tends to be our default position currently - we would never have to say sorry ever again.
