I know that but how else does this get resolved practically?

What government is actually going to change it without canvasing the population?

The issue has been resolved… the vocal minority won’t accept it…

I have zero issues if they change the date, doesn't bother me personally - what practical way is something significant as this get resolved outside of a referendum? I know that they are usually only for constitutional matters but what government is going to take that step without canvasing the population?
Neither. The same reason America will never have gun control even though normal people realise it’s common sense

An act of parliament.

One that is capable of reading media opinion polls when they turn to be majority in favour of changing the date.

An act of parliament.

I highly doubt any government is going to do that without knowing for sure it's the popular opinion. Media polls are utterly useless mate. An Act of parliament based on a media poll? come on....

Not something as touch point as this is.

Noooooo we must have a referendum right now and settle this once and for all!

when did I say people can't protest rofl?

I'm just saying the practical way is a referendum type vote, call it something else if you wish, no government is going to change the date of Australia day based on media polls like you suggested.

exactly. Just like the Voice and same sex marriage. They put both to the people, and the people decided. Its the only way to settle this once and for all.
The only reason the hand wringers dont want to do that is because they know what the result would be.

And that doesn't require a referendum. I'm sure you mean plebiscite though, since it's been explained multiple times now that it has nothing at all to do with the constitution. But governments make contentious calls all the time without going to a plebiscite. Turnbull only went to one over same-sex marriage because the homophobes in his own party room wouldn't have voted for it without knowing their constituents wanted it. Everyone else knew that legalising SSM had been the majority view for years, but Gillard refused to deal with the issue while she was suffering in the polls and Abbott was a homophobe.

Garbage, otherwise nobody would ever pay attention to them.

Do you think Albanese's decision to partially roll back the committed stage 3 tax cuts was based on public sentiment, or was it just the constitution, Mabo, justice, the vibe?

They should just do it the same way as they did the same sex marriage.

That wasn't a media poll.

I don't recall saying you said that. But it's clear you want a referendum now.

doesn't have to be a referendum per say, just a national vote.

IE Same Sex Marriage. Do that.

So a non-binding postal vote? Because even same sex marriage wasn't a plebiscite.

ok so what do you propose? cause I'm telling ya now, no government is going to change this without knowing what Australia as a whole want.

It's amusing how you talk about homophobes in the LNP, when Labor a few years earlier refused to consider same sex marriage. Even Penny Wong was against it.

It was the liberals who eventually changed i the law, yet you try and use it as a disparagement against the conservative party!

Labor it is because they are suffering in the polls, liberals it is because they are homophobes. So transparent it hurts!

One with balls to make a cabinet decision to change it.

that would require both side of politics agreeing to pass it as law.

it wont be brought by government in the first place, and secondly they vote both agree to pass it.

The only way this gets any type of real pathway is via a national vote, whatever you want to call it. No government is going to do this without knowing what Australia as a whole want ESPECAILLY since the voice referendum failed so hard.

Because it's a ****ing cop out. We elect politicians to make these decisions, why not put everything to a plebiscite in that case?

mate this isn't a trade deal with China, changing the national holiday is a little different to business as usual for governments. It absolutely deserves a proper process to find out what we all want, when no side of government ran on it on their campaigns.

You elected someone who ran on changing the date of Australia Day in their campaign? Who was that? Cause it kind of seems like they have made the decision not to do it, just not the way you like it...

You didn't elect anyone to make this decision. You just want them to do something you want, where others may not want it - they also listen to others you know?

Governments generally do stuff the majority of us want, I'm just saying they need to find out what the majority want. Which i think is a referendum type national vote, call it whatever you like.

My personal view is I don't celebrate aus day for the fact we landed on a specific day, the day itself is more than that, so if they changed it it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. They need to find out what the rest of the 25+ million people want.

well, they've made their decision, haven't they - they're leaving it as it is. Case closed - move on to the next issue to protest about.

Gillard might have been a homophobe, I don't know. If she was, she was certainly a lot less open about it than Abbott, who seemed to take pride in being a homophobe.

Abbott said the felt threatened by people like little old me which was pretty funny.
