Fukuoka is my favourite city in Japan.
I'll be there in late November for the sumo tournament. First visit to Fukuoka, but really looking forward to it.

I know it’s hard to get to, but not enough Hokkaido on these plans!

For those with time catch the train up there. So nice. Stop at Hakodate for a day or two then back on the train to Sapporo. Sapporo would be best in August - its when they have the big beer festival there. Food different up north too. Only time I have seen lamb eaten in Japan.

and the most elite seafood (sashimi/uni/eel etc) I’ve ever had

Wanted to go to Hokkaido but was out voted

Great to read other travellers thoughts on Japan

Hopefully things don't escalate further however for us it's full steam ahead

I'd be more worried about getting caught in a quake or being in a coastal area affected by a quake (inlaws live in a fisherman's village which would be wiped out by a tsunami). Let's be honest, if a nuke is dropped you won't know a thing (in saying so, I believe its more likely Godzilla and Mothra will appear than a nuke being dropped on Japan).

So so. I go there, eat, drink, buy cds and play darts. Don't really do any touristy things and never have. Obviously a lot easier to get around with a native speaker. Beautiful country and people IMO.

Going again this year on October 30th. Itinerary is still chopping and changing a bit.

Currently going with this, in order:
Tokyo - day trip to Nikko, and maybe Yokohama or Hakone.
Kyoto - day trip to Kobe and maybe Himeji
Osaka
Kanazawa
Kusatsu (We'll be getting there just after the trails on Mt Shirane close I think, which is disappointing)
Back to Tokyo

I went solo last time so going with someone else this time will be a bit different.
Takayama was my favourite city last time I went and i'd love to go back, but it's a bit tricky to fit in.

Kusatsu has a great onsen right in the middle of town from recollection.

Yeah, my hotel is right in the middle of town overlooking that area. Looking forward to it.

Kanagawa is the very best parts of Japan, there's onsen at Hakone with a pirate boat! And Shin-Yokohama is like any other big capital, if you need to forget that you're in Japan (just leave the main street and push some door and you'll be back in Japan). Yokohama city, Sakuragisho is similar in the big street and not so far from there there's the biggest Japanese Chinatown with lots of restaurant so you can make a combo visiting Japan and China! :)

I'm planning on going to Japan over christmas/ new years. Haven't planned anything as of yet. Any tips would be great!

I'm looking to do some skiing for a few days if that helps.

Anyone been to okinawa.

Would like to know if it is worth spending a week there on the beach.

Yep 1000% it worth and not only beach there's a lot's of place to visit check here, there's a list of hot spot:
https://latte.la/travel/place_search?keyword=okinawa&kinds=32 <--- only in Japanese but google translate can help. Contents is made by Japanese's people not from a company, that why it's poor :$.
https://livejapan.com <--- have an English version and all what you need, maybe copy of google maps suggestion or tripadvisor.

Any recommendations on a mobile phone in Japan, don't intend using it much but, thinking we might just use global roaming in our telstra if we need to make an urgent call, have organised a pocket wi fi

Any feed back appreciated

I probably wouldn't bother, and then just cop the global roaming fee if there is a need to make an emergency call.

get into your telstra / vodafone / whatever account and pay the daily rate for internet and calls overseas.

Or grab a data only sim at the airport when you arrive
