Commentating the GWS-Richmond game today on 7.
Fantastic to hear him back, I hope he gets a full-time AFL job next year.
Commentary in the GWS vs Richmond game is very good, this is my checklist of his first half:
Observant in his comments that are for the most part clear and concise
A speaking voice with good diction, which doesn't break or crack up
Doesn't say 'um', 'but' and 'yeah' in between every third word
Non-repetivtive, makes a point without flogging it to death
Not prone to over-the-top, artificial excitement or inserting catch-phrases everywhere to gain greater relevance
Not fishing for compliments or seeking out to have his ego stroked by the other commentators
Doesn't diverge off-topic from the play to do 'storytime of when I played footy' or look what player X did on social media
Will he be given more air-time in the future? Probably not, and is now probably seen as a threat to BT, Tim, Lingy, Darce, Basil, Bruce and Hame.
I 100% thought he was commentating the Fremantle v Sydney match until I read the previous post and Mark Readings' name flashed up on the screen haha.
definitely, just called the game and has a good clear voice. And the latter was actually pretty impressive.
Yep, he does. Also calls the WAFL on TV aswell, and also called a few games on Channel 9 when they had the rights. Not sure why Seven doesn't use him more often, he's excellent.Doesn't Mark Readings call games for 6PR/3AW from Domain Stadium? He is really good, as you said.
Watched a bit of it (until it became too one sided) - a breath of fresh air compared to the usual clowns that do the Saturday afternoon game.I think he called the Sydney vs Port Adelaide game, thought i recognised a familiar voice, haven't heard him call a game for years, hopefully he gets a more permenant role.
Yes that was him, and very good he was tooI think he called the Sydney vs Port Adelaide game, thought i recognised a familiar voice, haven't heard him call a game for years, hopefully he gets a more permenant role.
Take note BT, Hamish and Basil. That's proper footy commentary.
Listening to Drew, Robbo and Wallsy makes me realise what we've lost and the rubbish it's been replaced with.
Should go to Friday nights next season with Bruce...
He complements the Game rather than shifts the focus to himself.
Afl sorely needs more callers like him
Seven won't ditch their now undisputed (in their eyes, now commetti is leaving) caller on Friday nights.Yes, the AFL does sorely need more callers like him, but definitely without callers like Bruce by his side
Blight did play by play in 96 as well, it's him and Rexy who called the North game where Carey single-handedly demolished the Dees and kicked I think 11 goals. One of the best individual performances I've seenJason Bennett is so much better than back in the day, when during the Olympics, Seven used Gerard Healy, Terry Wheeler and Malcolm Blight for play by play. Now those guys were not really play by play guys unlike Jason Bennett. If you watch the 1992 season highlights you know what i mean. Now they did use Ted Whitten and he was pretty good. Rex Hunt and Ian Major filled in during 1996 if i remember?
No doubt he'll be on saturdays for the next month.Next year put him on saturday nights if BT replaces Dennis on friday nights.
Of course they won't do it as Seven don't like having quality commentators on saturday night.
