Stoked for Jason! Hope he smashes the hit outs and takes a big grab or two. Should get a huge cheer when he touches the ball for the first time.

Absolutely shattered I can't make the game now. Certainly has made the game much more exciting. And the next couple weeks too. Will he be up against mike pyke next week?

As I posted in the game thread, I am one very proud advocate today.

To come from where he was, in such a short space of time is an amazing effort. Being athletically / genetically blessed is one thing; but to couple that with desire, work ethic and a willingness to learn is another thing entirely.

I hope he shows a bit, because I genuinely believe this could be a pivotal moment, not just for the
Mighty saints, but the game as a whole. good luck big fella!

I had heard once on the commentary of a Sydney game that Mike Pyke was from Canada. Freaky coincidence ;)

I'm all choked up!!

I may indeed shed a tear, probably not so much through pride but more because when the game starts I'll have been on the pi$$ for about 8 hours and I might be a bit tired and emotional! :D

As I said on the main board (but I thought I'd intrude here just a bit) it's always good to see any player debut, but one with a backstory like his... Excellent. Hope he goes really well for you guys and turns into a handy player going forward.

Well done on taking the punt.

I can imagine my head a pic of you and Holmes would resemble Danny DeVito & Arnold Schwartzenegger in Twins:)

Haha! Sad but true.... He does look a bit like devito doesn't he! :drunk:

A great achievement for a great bloke! Go Holmesy!

Everyone should acknowledge the club too

If you think about it St Kilda has in the last decade.
Played the 1st game overseas for points in the AFL .
Appointed the 1st female assistant coach in the AFL
Now the 1st American born player will play for the saints in the AFL

All the best Jason looking forward to being there watching you too.

Great job from Holmes! Watching him in the intra-club there was no doubt he was an exciting prospect physically and with his attributes. Credit to him that he has continued to work hard to the point where he is making his debut. This is (another) real feel-good story around our club which is brilliant.

I can't think of a better place to put this, but here goes. Even without the sub going, the idea of having two dedicated rucks in the team, with another one in the VFL, is becoming more attractive. Many of us laughed at Hawthorn having paid big picks for Macca, only to have him playing most of the year for Box Hill - well, none of us were laughing when Ben got a premiership medal. He was that third ruck, waiting for when they needed him, and what a time for them to need him.

Anyway, I think the idea of having just one ruck with a big forward chopping out here and there isn't the best option. As we've seen this year, all that does is lessen the quality of your ruck (from Longer to Bruce), while also lessening the quality in your forward line (from Bruce to, well, nobody!). For all the issues of having a second ruck taking up one of the tall spots, I think the benefits outway the costs.

We are setting up a magnificent ruck trio: Longer as dedicated ruck, Hickey as a true ruck-forward, and Hickey to come in when we need him. This is, as the Hawks have shown, the kind of ruck-team of which premierships are borne.

Great job recruiters!

Congrats to Jason Holmes on making his AFL debut this week for St Kilda. I saw him play during the pre-season and he showed a fair bit, good size, athletic and covers the ground quite well. I will be heading down to Etihad on Saturday to watch this game. Looking forward to seeing him in action.

You have to also hope that the hicky type Ruckman is prepared to wait like that.

Bloody Rippa! Great to see the big bloke have the guts & determination, to attempt & conquer what he has set his sights on. Also great to see the club have the guts to take on a not so young recruit & turn him into an AFL league footballer. Kudos all round. Looking forward to the game & one Mr Jason Holmes winning the hit outs for the night & hopefully kicking a couple of goals. Gawd ....... aren't the Saints starting to turn into an excitement machine, pleasantly expecting the unexpected. :)
