Jasprit Bumrah

He’s averaged approx 20 less than his bowling partner. People love to shit on our batting line up and t20 era nonsense. Fact is without Bumrah, Aussie batsmen would have feasted this series the way Hayden, Ponting, Clarke used to on Zaheer, Ishant etc.

In saying all that, if Pat Cummins is able to deliver us a step closer to an overdue BTG trophy tomorrow with the ball I will be writing a post every bit as flowery as this one for the skipper.

My thoughts:

1) He's deceptively quick - he consistently bowls around 140 km/h, which is remarkable given how languid his run-up and action are. Batsmen are fooled into thinking they have more time to face him than they do.

2) He's remarkably accurate given how much of a round-arm he bowls with. Usually more round-arm bowlers sacrifice accuracy in exchange for movement. Not Bumrah - he's both accurate and able to move the ball away from the right-hander.

3) He has a pinpoint yorker to mix things up.

4) His unorthodox action makes it harder for batsmen to pick him up, so they have even less time to play him.

5) He tends to bowl from wide of the crease - that, combined with his action, allows him to slant it across the left-hander. Figuring out which balls to play and which ones to leave from him must be tricky if you're a left-hander.

There are questions over his longevity - his action must place a hell of a lot of strain on his shoulder, plus bowlers who rely on unorthodox actions lose some of their novelty and therefore effectiveness over time as batsmen become used to them - but right now he's a truly unique talent.

Updating this:

1) He's slowed down a touch, but that's arguably made him more dangerous, because he's not only just as accurate as before, but also moves the ball more. So he's equally threatening to both left and right-handers, as McSweeney discovered. Combine that with his clinical yet relentless nature, and it's not so surprising that he's having a Johnson-esque series.

2) Concerns over his longevity remain. He's only just taken 200 wickets despite debuting almost 7 years ago, and he's been run into the ground during this series. You could see signs of the strain affecting him in Melbourne: his unusually emotional reaction after dismissing Sam Konstas, his inability to finish off Lyon/Boland until it was too late, and even being more hapless with the bat than usual.

3) It looked like my thesis RE his unorthodox action was playing out, but his sheer skill and relentlessness has proven me wrong.
