Wow young person aged under 25 has a drink and dances on a weekend. Huge story.
It may not be a huge story in the way you have said it.
But for a professional footballer a month or so out from finals it is not a good thing.

The good fair dinkum teams cut out the piss from the half way mark of the year

Context is everything. A player going for a couple of beers and a dance i have no issues with. Players getting drunk and getting into bar fights (degoey, johnson) treating women badly (too many to name) or associating with idiots like didak did are 100 times worse. They are young people who are perfectly entitled to drin and go out if they behave in the right way (that goes not just for our club).

At 3 or 4 in the morning with about 3 or 4 cruisers (lol) in hand? Not ideal IMO but can't blame them.

The worst part about that is drinking cruisers which are rubbish quality. About the only think as crap as VB. The rest is a non issue.

and they tried to turn him into a forward this year. lol.

our coaches have no idea. was our one bright spark in last years prelim and is now continuing on this year after finally being given a decent go at it in defence. more due to luck of ruggles and thurlows bad form/injuries. his marking was exceptional last might and now starting to run and carry and break lines. only problem is his disposal.

Best fit as a lockdown back pocket player we've had since Hunt and will still get better.

Cruisers?? Low carb option perhaps.

He trained with the forwards in order to get a sense of how to play as a forward. Then if he plays well enough as a forward he could stay up there, and if he was behind others as a forward he could go back with a better understanding of how small forwards play which helps him in stopping them.

Even though sometimes we could probably use his pressure up forward with all our injuries, he has gone down back and been absolutely brilliant, now he knows even more about how small forwards try to play he now has a better understanding of how to stop them and he's showing that.

Good coaching move :thumbsu:

Where do you think the attacking style of defender play came from? The back of the corn flakes box?

He has never, as a defender, played with that attacking flair. Moving him up the ground, or at least training there, would have provided him with a different perspective on the game - or at least enhanced what he already had.

But hey, if you want him to stay the way he was 2 years ago with no coaching and no development, that is your choice.

But then I guess wind goes out of the old "no developments at the club" sails.

I can't agree here sorry mate. In the 2s he has played with that run, it's more to do with confidence than flair... I thought the going forward idea was rubbish and think whilst he may have learnt a bit it's a bit of rewriting history to suggest it was to teach him to be a better defender.

I was having beers with his junior coach out at Leopold Friday night, he said he is confident now and backing himself as he did as a kid.

Agree with this 100%. Playing backline footy and being prepared to run off your opponent is very much about confidence and there would be no shortage of junior footballers who did so at a junior level successfully but take time to back themselves to do it on the big stage. A stint up forward doesn't develop attacking flair.

Bews is playing good footy (great footy actually) because he's finally been given a decent run at it and that has very much allowed him to build his confidence and play the sort of football he would have been used to displaying as a dominant junior no doubt. It's one thing to have the ability to play as a rebounding defender, it's another thing to back yourself to do it in an environment where the slightest mistake inevitably proves costly.

He's been a shining light this year. Pleasant surprise.

"GEELONG has started negotiations to secure defender Jed Bews for a further two seasons as the 23-year-old cements his position in the Cats' backline with outstanding recent form.

Bews was the Cats' best player on Friday night against Adelaide, quelling Adelaide star Eddie Betts once again as well as providing rebound from defensive 50."

Great to hear! Keep it up Bewsy!
