Well I saw Macca shirk the contest a couple of times against Hawthorn, whilst i was suprised and wondered why, I didn't feel the need to start a thread about it.....

rutten could have absolutely polaxed a guy on the 50 meter line but didn't, sometimes we are a bit harsh.maybe the new rules are making players think twice where as before they would just put the shoulder down and go for it. none of us that are playing at the highest level proberly can't understand fully what it is like trying to anticipate what the umpire thinks is fair or illegal. just a thought.

But surely the coaching staff are still demanding the player lays a tackle! I can understand players opting not to bump, but, not to tackle?

Maybe because it is legal to bump (within 5 mt of the ball?) even when the opposition player doesn't have the ball, but it is illegal to tackle if the opposition player does not have possession of the ball?
Or am I wrong?
One other point on the thread:
If Jericho had gone for marking the ball with the rest of the players, would he have been able to soccer through those two goals in the 3RD 1/4 against Richmond?
So, attacking the footy at all times, is not necessarily the right thing all of the time?

Yes, in the Rutten one maybe the player didn't have the ball, I don't recall, but against Hawthorn I saw both McLeod and Jericho opt not to tackle the player with the ball a number of times. I'm not talking about not going to the player, I'm talking about choosing not to tackle when it was clearly the play to make.

And I saw McLeod do something Jericho wouldn't do. Pass off to a covered player in a worse position when he was 40 mr out directly in front.

Anxious wait for Crows fall guy Luke Jericho
ZAC MILBANK | June 18, 2008 02:15pm

WHETHER Luke Jericho's standing at West Lakes has changed will be known tomorrow evening.

Adelaide's enigmatic forward - who has booted 7.5 in his past two matches - could yet again be the fall guy at selection despite his solid form.

The Crows - with Brett Burton available from suspension and Trent Hentschel and Nick Gill in promising touch - suddenly have options to address their makeshift attack for Saturday night's match against Brisbane at the Gabba. And just as Jericho was axed after performing important roles against Carlton last year and Melbourne this year, he could be headed for the same fate.

"He's come to grips with that. It's probably helped him," Crows operations manager John Reid said of Jericho never feeling safe in Adelaide's 22.

"He's on the edge all the time but he's had good discussions with the coach (Neil Craig) and the coaching staff in regards to all that. He doesn't kid himself about where that all sits but he may well be retained (against the Lions).

"It will be a selection issue.

"His Richmond game was quite good. Last week was just okay. I would imagine that it (selection) will be a late night."

Burton - who has served his two-match suspension - is certain to be included while Hentschel, Gill and, to a lesser extent, teenage sensation Taylor Walker will also be considered. But it is the SANFL form of Gill - who snared 13 marks and kicked four goals - and Hentschel - who booted four goals - which has the Adelaide selection panel pondering its options.

"They've got to be (in the mix)," Reid said of Hentschel and Gill.

"Trent's form has been good the past few games. Physically he's all cleared and ready so he's obviously one who will be on the drawing board.

"Nick Gill's form was exceptional last week and from watching training he looks like he's getting back to where he was.

"Both those boys will certainly be on the board but whether they're picked is another thing. You've got Burton coming back in and those two guys, so there will be plenty to discuss."

This leaves Jericho - who is on a one-year deal at Adelaide - under threat despite producing his career-best game (5.2) against the Tigers, at the MCG, a fortnight ago.

It is a feeling the 23-year-old knows he will never shake for as long as he is on an AFL list.

"Every game I've played this year I've had the approach that it's my last chance and I have to keep performing and playing as well as I can," Jericho said in The Advertiser on June 9.

"Whether it's round two against West Coast or this week I just have to go out there and do my best and hopefully that will be good enough. Hopefully for the rest of the year I can keep playing on the edge and performing really well."

Jericho gets his last chance to impress on the training track at AAMI Stadium today from 11am.

The poor guy is even on ch.9 tonight, talk about tough, because he won’t get a game, not even his most ardent supporter could build a case from his to stay in.

Logic suggests that if Communications Manager David Burtenshaw approved this media request for him to appear on channel 9, it would be a fairly strong indication that he would be selected.

Obviously the match committee wouldn’t have meet before this was approved I doubt they would give a media commitment to someone who has just been dropped.

If he gets dropped then I'll be spitting chips. He kicks goals, something we as a team seem to be struggling at. He has EARNT his spot in the team, and with each game his confidence should be improving.

FFS I've heard Tippett might be dropped, Basset might be dropped, Griff might be dropped, D-Mac might get dropped and Jericho 'might' get dropped.

Could be a character test that Craigy loves, It won’t surprise me if he gets dropped – I think he knows he the hole filler for the season.

Neil Craig did say last week that Young players are expected to perform and that them being young in not an excuse for lacklustre performances, hence he was dropped. Both for team balance and a better player.

So why doesn't he give them the chance to perform? If you were a young player, just in the team, and you were given 20...30....40% of game time wouln't you feel useless and wonder why you were there at all? How much confidence would you get if you thought the coach didn't want you there in the first place? If you are going to play kids at least make them feel they have earnt their place and deserve to be there. No, we just send them back to the SANFL where somebody might make them feel wanted. Good luck to South.

that is certainly the other side of the coin, and a very valid point too.

Happens all the time. And I am sure all the Adelaide players including D-Mac and Otten were told before hand that they would not be getting huge game time, as would also be addressed in their post match reports.

If your thinking that 'the coach' doesn't like you and 'your not good enough' and your playing AFL then you seriously have some mental problems.

You would think that players like Douglas, Knights and to a lesser extent Reilly, would have let the new young blokes like DMac know how it's a slowly, slowly introduction to the top level. They've probably told him how LUCKY he's been to get SO MUCH game time already! Craig is well known for the way (in terms of gradual build up over a long period of time) he introduces our young blokes, I am sure they'd be under no illusions.

And Porps_is_ Hot....As for why he was dropped instead of Jericho.... you can't be serious!

He has had lots of chances to perform, and perhaps the Crows think its best not to give him alot of gametime, because at the end of the day the goal is to win games not appease some imaginary mental weakness, I'm sure Mackay is well aware of where he is at and so are the Crows coaching staff, I think we have seen Craig develop enough young players now that we can agree that he might just know what he is doing.

Besides, theres more than one player on the team.
