Jessie White!

Im stepping in here and giving Jessie White the green light.

Jessie will become a great player once the pressure is of him with Bradshaw back in the squad. I know what its like to be a tall forward and I know why he'd be having a few hickups but the bloke doesnt die. He drops a mark he is back in there to grab the ball again. The worst thing to do now is to put him in the reserves the first time was fair enough. But to do it again will kill his confidence instead of retrieve it.

Give him a chance he has all the signs and skills required just let him develop them in the 1's.

have some patients we being the size that he is and the position he plays it will take time for him come on. He still has a lot of improvement to come but he is capable of it.

Plus at the moment he is playing a very important role for the forward structure. When the ball comes in fast and long he is creating a contest and bringing the smaller players into the game. If you watch the hawthorn game he was involved in the majority of our goals. For a big forward like that its about more than kicks and goals.

He will provide a good structure for our forward line in the future with Johnston, Rohan, TDL, McGlynn, Moore etc. all benefiting from his presence in the forward line.

I agree that he could become a very good player, but i have no problem dropping him for a couple of games so he can find a heap of the footy and get some touch back. He seems to really respond too.

when he was dropped for round 9. he kicked 6 in the next 2 weeks, ditto when he was dropped round 14,15 he kicked 5 in the 2 weeks after he came back.

Leave him. It's not like Roos isn't afraid to drop him or get stuck into him. He is obviously doing something right or Roos knows there isn't an adequate replacement with Bradshaw injured. S120 and goat summed it up. He is a young key forward and they are always the most inconsistent players in the game.

I don't agree with moving him into defence either. His goal kicking is too good imo. He needs to work on his marking ability but he is dangerous lining up for goal and he seems to have a pretty good technique. Long term Grundy and LRT are already set in defence. Plus we have that young guy in the reserves who is playing well. Forgot his name.

I was going to mention how accurate Jesse seems to be in front of goal but you've already said it. He has 20.12 this year which is pretty accurate. Over 60%.

His 2nd efforts and athleticism are also very good. He can beat big defenders on the ground quite easily. And often when he does drop marks he recovers and wins the ball back and just burns off his opponent.

All in all, he is an amazing athlete for his size, is a reliable shot on goal, contests often and hard at the marking contests and normally can mark very well on the lead. It is his contested marking that is the worry right now. But hey, he hasn't played 50 games yet. Give him time. He will only get bigger and better.

Which of the current or past power forwards in the AFL had marking ability of similar to Jesse's level, and improved that enough to become a great AFL forward?

I can't think of one. Fevola - no. Brown - no. Pavlich - no. Riewoldt - no. Other Riewoldt - no. Lloyd - no. Franklin - no. Roughead - no. Tredrea - no. Richardson - no. Cloke - no. Carey - no. They all had considerably better hands, I'm not sure its an ability that can be improved as greatly as other areas like fitness, kicking and defensive pressure.

Barry Hall definitely doesn't have the best hands at AFL level, but he is a much better mark than White. Yes he's young, yes he's developing, but can someone at least show me an example to prove that its possible? Obviously I really hope I'm wrong, as he definitely has the athleticism and goal sense to succeed, and I'd like him to.

hopefully in 2011 we will have a reasonably fit Bradshaw who can play at least 75% of games. He is arguably the best hands in the comp and can teach Jesse ALOT. Agreed, if by the end of next season he continues to drop marks consistently, then reconsider, but for now, leave him be and see him develop.

He was quiet on the weekend, but against Hawthorn he created some really good contests when he was outnumbered in the air, with goals resulting from the crumbs.
He makes a good contest, the marks and goals will come.

He is still developing... BUT he is providing a contest and therefore doing his job in our team... I just can't see us dropping him just yet :S

He will most likely stay in our team until the end of the year as I believe Johnston is injured and he is very important to our structure

Hey guys I'm not sure yet but I think Plugg3r may have played Australian Rules Football at some stage.

Can someone please confirm?

;)

Haha during my teenage years I did for Junior Victoria Country and Sunraysia representative. Tore my achilles and then game over for me. One day might get back into it lwhen I lose this weight I stacked on after the injury lol.
Bodies dont like it when you instantly give up 4 sports at once lol

Im with Leo here.

It's not been A great year for White and he has worn criticism from everyone including the coach but against the Hawks he smashed packs and ensured the ball fell to advantage even if he wasn't grabbing them. And he kept working against Freo to the end.

He has a huge power ratio and some serious potential so Before we cast him out lets see what happens next year when Bradshaw is back and Jesse gets to open up the play a bit rather than finding himself constrained by 2 backmen or so.

He's 22, turns 23 in January. Played 37 games. Too soon to panic. Needs to stay in 1s for the experience. He should play his 50th toward the middle of next year so it may not be till 2012 that he starts turning games. Trading now would be a waste of all the effort put into him by the coaches.

Is Jack Riewoldt a forward that didn't click till he'd played 50? He's now played 66 games and has become very good this year.

I'd imagine the coaches will have him spending a lot of time on making marks stick. It seems his technique involves too much acceleration at the point of contact - too aggressive at the ball? Does he need to finesse at the moment of contact to take some force out of the ball rather than it bouncing off or going through his hands?

Jesse has only played 37 games, the rule of thumb is that an AFL player isn't "a player" until 50, so ease off. Next year will be a breakout year for him.

I think we can look at a number of things that look to suggest that next year Jesse will be a bigger contributor:

- Only played 37 games so far, as as some have said, 50 games tends to be when a player starts to really show signs of being a consistent contributor
- Trained all off season as the 3rd tall with Bradshaw to play FF and Goodes to play CHF, which has had to change due to injuries/form
- Hopefully Longmire has seen that Goodes' best spot is as a floater between forward and midfield, thus Jesse can play CHF with Bradshaw behind him at FF
- His work rate and intensity at the contest has pretty clearly improved over the year to the point where he is the only permanent big forward in our line up right now and he is still creating many crumbs and goals from crumbs

He absolutely needs to be more consistent when he goes for contested marks, but it will come with time. Jack Riewoldt has only really started plucking every other contested mark recently, give him time and he'll get there. He can take a huge hanger and can mark well on the lead (though he does drop too many of those uncontested marks too) but his 2nd efforts, skills when the ball hits the ground and pace are already very handy, he often seems to mop up his own mess when he does spill a mark.

I would persist with him for as long as it takes. I just cannot believe that this guy will not be a successful big bodied forward for us.

Jessie, has had a load of game time now in the seniors, and is not producing.
Sorry guys, but he is a lemon. He has had many chances to step up and become
a dominant forward, but still keeps dropping marks, and not being aggresive enough in the forward line. Dont care about last weeks winning goal,or any suchlike bits of play he has luckily been a part of. If there is a trade Macveigh
thread, surely there must be trade White thread,i know who i would pick!

FFS. It's JESSELENKO :diamond:.

Not Jessie with an i.

If you expect him to get it so right, how about YOU - get it right!

RIGHT!

well said...agree with it all...i think everyone was expecting jessie to take a big step this year after a promising finish to 2009...he's definitely shown improvement in his last few games...he's alot more prominent than he was at the start of the year....i think over the next couple of years he'll really develop into a great player... he's a pretty accurate kick... it's just his hands that are letting him down atm...with more work over the pre season he should get that right... and once that clicks i think he'll be really dangerous... he's got all the weapons, it just hasn't come together for him yet

It was frustrating not being able to reply to this thread for so long.

Thankfully though, S120 summed it up perfectly. I think White's form at the end of last season got our hopes for this year up a little. Not many KP forwards become stars before hitting that 40-50 game bracket. He's shown some improvement this season but 2011 will be the year he steps up and blows the competition away.

I still think he'll be a star.

Not many men his size can move like he can and follow up with 2nd efforts. He just needs to get those marks sticking in his sizeable hands. As someone else pointed out.... Jack Reiwoldt is an excellent example of what happens when your marks start sticking.

I think he is finally finding his feet in the forward line, his 2nd half of the season has been quite good but he has not much reward on the scoreboard which I guess we all judge him on. I think he is really starting put the effort in that the coaches want from him and dont underestimate the value his impact is having in creating opportunities for others, hopefully 2011 will be his break-out year especially if Bradshaw can keep fit and create another option it could be a very formidable forward line indeed.
