It's amazing what one highlights video can do.

He goes from being a nobody who wasn't invited to the Draft Camp, and featuring in a couple of phantom drafts around the 3rd/4th round. To all of a sudden being top 20 material and one of the best KPP's in the draft. And all this has happened since his highlights video was released....

There is a whole thread on how overrated Panos apparently is, and now it looks like that is happening again here.

There are 10 talls who should all be picked up ahead of Houghton, and throw in the 20+ midfielders who all have cases to be picked inside the first two rounds. And I can't see him going any earlier than the third round.

So the cat's finally out of the bag. Most in the know rate this kid very highly, and couple with his draft camp results and his size, should see him go higher than most expect.
 
Honestly don't rate the kid. Must say it was a pretty impressive highlights package but. I seen him play in the Prelim Final of the Colts against Peel. On that occassion Chris Luff really towelled him up and Houghton was very undisciplined.

I expect him to go around 40 or 50 mainly because of his good testing at the state screening.
 
I think people are going a bit over the top.

Yeah he has some talent but if he was a genuine top 20 prospect he would of been on Matt Burgans radar and as Chris has said he would of made it to draft camp.
 
i must say thats the first time ive seen any footage of him, was [retty impressive stuff in there but it looks like those highlights were of the whole year because there was games in there against nearly every team in the comp. saying that tho i was very impressed by him and i dont really know how most phantom drafts have him going to fremantle with picks 49, 50 or 51 or what ever it is we have because i think hell definately be a 3rd rounder especially considering the lack of talls this year. how tall is he by the way does anyone know? he doesnt look that tall in the vid.

Skinny, plays from behind and has average balance, while he has no real flaws and has plenty of upside he has not dedicated himself to football from what people have said.

I have watched alot of him, and he is a real talent.

Chris Luff toweled him up, because he is one of the smartest junior footballers ive seen.

Joel has everything going for him, and could become a very very good footballer.

Will need to work on his attitude though, is very undisciplined and isn't the easiest guy to like.

How he interviews with clubs will effect where he goes.

If he knuckles down and works hard really could become a player

Has played some wonderful footy for Perth colts this year, and showed
ability to dominate games with large bags of goals.

Doesn't have the presence on the field that a Aaron Black does, but once he bulks up will be a impressive unit.

Joel Houghton has one of the best highlights packages going around. His state screening results were impressive; better than many of his direct rivals were doing up in Canberra. Yes, people should be noticing him.

But:
I saw 2 of his games at the U18 Championships and if he got 2 kicks I'd be surprised. Seriously, he barely got a kick. I don't remember him taking a mark - and I looked back over the DVD twice to check.

I read earlier in this thread that Luff towelled him up in the Colts finals.

This inconsistency and lack of commitment will probably be the thing that drags him back. He should be going in the top 30, but I wouldn't be surprised if he lasted to the 50s.
if he can get his head together and regularly play like his lightlights reel, he'll make a top player. If not, his career will be short and undistinguished. I hope he can come good: I hate to see talent wasted.

Agree... I managed to catch 4 of the 5 games he played in and he was bad. If he played a good carnival he would of pushed the top 20 in my opinion.

He managed to kick 4 goals in the NT, but if you didn't kick a bag of goals for WA in the carnival something was not right.

Inconsistency is his problem. I would not doubt his commitment... Houghton, Florio and Leeson were 3 of the Perth Demons Colts players who made state screening that continued to train heavily after the season to stay in great condition.

the hype on bigfooty about joel houghton reminds me a lot of 2007 pre draft.

the player that was hyped up is
193 cm 89kgs
vertical leap 81 cm (nicnatunui like)
20 mtr sprint 2.83 (fastest at draft camp)

was expected to be drafted around pick 5- 30

ended up going 1st pick in the psd to my team richmond, i still have hopes that he will develope into a kpp but wouldnt be suprised if he doesnt make it at all.
the youtube clips can be very very deceptive 2-4 minutes of highlights doesnt really reflect the true player & the recruiting scouts would of seen multiple games of these kids.

Gourdis' highlights weren't that deceptive, he dropped because of mental issues and stamina problems.

I guess getting a sports psychologist and a long hard pre-season is to much to ask for from the Richmond staff....
