Couldn't agree with this point enough, however, John Barker needed to spend more time coaching the players than trying being their mate. Stats aside and "THIS IS FACT", I witnessed this first hand all of last year, nearly every Thursday or Friday session. In a conversation with "a highly reliable source", a player from the Hawthorn FC senior list has already said (prior to Christmas 2010) that the new addition to the coaching panel has had an immediate impact in that he is 100% committed to a professional football relationship with the players. Barker tried to be too buddy buddy (pardon the pun) with the players.
As for goal kicking, John Barker was one of the most reliable shots for goal and I won beers on his ability in front of the sticks. As the forward line coach, I would have thought that if there was an issue with the conversion from set shots, it is ultimately his responsibility to remedy that, at a very minimum attempt to.
"I've noticed other 'fact free' morons bag Barker for the Hawks goal kicking as well... How about their actual goalkicking coach - David Rath (who has never kicked a goal in an AFL game!!!!)" Hawklord
Maybe Barker failing to attempt to rectify this and ultimately take responsibilty for this shortcoming, ironically deep in the area of the ground that he is responsible for, could very well be the main point of contention. Especially when clearly stated David Rath = no AFL goals, John Barker = at least one.
Ultimately, when all is said and done, the responsibility rests squarely on Clarko's shoulders. Barker may well have been his last excuse and maybe Mr Fox has been out to the western suburbs to get the axe prepared (for smooth transition) and I don't mean he got one from Costa's Mitre 10. If you get my drift.
