Did we need another thread ?

In this one I will say seriously

a great man and a good coach , we don't have many premiership coaches and he delivered that and other great memories.

Players love him it seems and he is a great ambassador for the club.

It's the right time, Hope he is ok

all the best Horse
Yes we did as it was when it happened

Callum Mills is on his honeymoon I believe so Horse won't be accompanied by his captain
Well his captain didn’t do all that much “captaining” this year anyway - so no great loss on that front. Sorry to see Horse go, and the very harsh critics of him here will no doubt be rejoicing. Let’s not forget, he’s still a human being. And our record in the last years 20 absolutely craps on clubs like StKilda, north, carlton who haven’t seen the silverware since last century. So I do hope that big Cox will come under the same scrutiny on here and if we don’t win the flag in 2025 should be he go too? Will the players ever accept any of the blame??? Questions, questions, questions.

Quite significant I think that he has admitted questioning his own desire from half-way through the season.

While it might not stick out like dog's balls, it's difficult to imagine that that waning enthusiasm has not affected his actions, whether thru subtle bits of body language, his choice of words at different times, or the clarity of his decision-making.

Did the players sub-consciously pick up on it and, if so, how much?

Personally, I'd rather him step right back away from the club for twelve months... always be on-call for Coxy, but let him take ownership uninhibited by the presence of the great man himself.

As a footballer, I won plenty of GFs and lost a few more than I wanted to, with that in mind, when I transitioned to coaching, my goal was to play that last game of the season... when everybody else had put away their boots and could come and watch the best teams, or else move onto summer activities full of coulda beens, woulda beens and shoulda beens about another failed season.

Longmire has taken our club to that biggest game, in an extraordinarily difficult competition, 5 times in 14 years... it really is astounding.

Good on ya John. Thank you.

My entirely selfish reaction to this news.

I am really really sorry for you guys. We made a Sack Horse thread earlier this year and only took 53 pages. Meanwhile for you guys has been well over 5000 pages and running for 7 years or so. Yikes.

Very odd but could be just bad timing
Not that odd. Mills is on his moneymoon, Parker is no longer a Swan, Harley has a family situation.

Odd would be literally any of these guys turning up for a press conference given those circumstances.

It shows the difference in character between the two men. One flag and knowing when to hand over is infinitely better than no flag and hanging on for that last paycheque.

IMO kudos to all concerned at the club.

John took us to two of the last 3 GFs and there must have been a temptation for one more year to go back to the well and try to atone for the poor losses.

Instead he recognised the time was right to walk away.

The club has had a clear succession plan in place for some time and I'm confident the transition will be smooth (and just as the last time hopefully successful).
There seemed to be a good relationship between John and Dean and never did I feel that the two weren't giving their best and seeking success for the club as a whole, rather than individual accolades.

Fitting that we keep Horse around the place, where he can observe and advise, but I have no fear that he will cross boundaries and that Cox will be allowed to coach HIS team.
Soft cap relief doesn't hurt either.

Also feel it's a measure of the club that this didn't leak, even though there have clearly been discussions about the future in recent times.

Good luck Coxy and thanks for everything Horse. :thumbsupv1:

I'm not sure you know what troll means.

It isn't just "any oppo supporter posting" (in this case they are knocking Port, not us at all).
Don't trust them and can put that film elsewhere , at least it wasn't my old mates.
To me this is about celebrating Horse and what he has done .
As negative as i can be , some on here and say facebook are remarkable

HMMM

“I had been wrestling with the decision about whether I would coach on for 2025 since about midway through last season.

“The team was travelling really well – in fact this year as good as we ever have. However, even during this year with the team’s superb on-field form and our football department working really well in support, I felt in myself that my time as coach of the club was coming towards a close
