Coach John Longmire - Part IV

Its about Flags , no one cares about Rodney Eade winning 50% of his career games coached.

Longmire has coached some of the greatest players this club has had in its history, sure he made finals a lot, also lost plenty too, Ditto Chris Scott, both have losing finals records,

I would say Hardwick coached some ordinary players to multiple flags

Longmire is a good coach, but its one flag , he isnt as good as hardwick its not even close unless you are being a one eyed cheerleader

You do understand I'm not dissing Hardwick? I just rate him 3rd... with light years before a very distant 4th.

I know, I was just arguing why I thought he was better. But not really an argument worth having as it's veered off from the original topic of why Horse is worth every cent he's on.

So if we win the flag this year and next, does Longmire then become the best?

Only for the day, then he'll immediately transition back to being too long at the club, having a 'stale' outlook and it'll be time for him to go!

Apparently Ross Lyons worth as a coach was defined by the ball not bouncing up for Stephen Milne

Well sure, but Richmond have faired better than us in every one of those measures too like memberships, sponsorship deals, public attention etc.

I just don't know what else you can judge successful coaches on if not flags.

I'd also argue that Hardwick had a lesser team than Horse or Scott had when they won their flags, but developed a strategy and game plan that produced three times their success.
Wins? Average home and away season ladder position? Longevity. Win %. There are obviously dozens of different measures of success and sure, you can weight premierships as the most important thing but it's unnecessary to limit your criteria to a single thing.

I reckon the Richmond teams have been pretty good. Pretty hard to argue that it's a worse list than the swans in 2012. Our leading goal kicker was Jetta who remains one of my favourite players but he is hardly an all time great

It's just different. There is no way that Hardwick could do what Longmire or Scott has done in terms of sustained success, particularly in a non footy state like Longmire. Longmire hasn't been capable of getting a team of the quality of Richmond together. I don't think if we were to swap coaches the swans would become a better team though.

On another subject:
as if A.Clarkson would go and coach North or GWS

..and AFL House wants him for Tasmania. But I suspect he'll hold out for better than that.

Is J.Longmire ready for a move to Football Manager?
