This isn't me calling for his ticket to England, But why isn't anyone talking about him (on a board that is mostly hype and crisis mongering).

Has had a red hot start to his shield career with 2 tons already, including a crucial 108 in the final.
Obviously he's still young and raw, but he looks to be technically sound with a decent brain to boot.

I say get on board the bandwagon before cossie eats him :thumbsu:

There's been a fair bit of discussion in the Australia A thread on him.

Excellent defence and and an even better temperament.

I think he will tour England with the A team by virtue of there being no decent performing openers in the Shield atm, outside of Rogers.

But you're right he needs another full season of first class cricket before challenging.

Unlikely to get picked because of his age/experience, but if he could snag even a Div 2 county contract, it'd probably fast track it a bit.

Definitely a great start to a career but in the same boat as Agar, needs time in the FC system before being considered for higher honours. Seems to be giving himself the best chance of success though and good luck to him.

Being so young will be interesting to see if he has thoughts of going home as I imagine both Tas and NSW would offer him contracts if he wanted.

I don't see why he would want to? He gets to learn off of Australia's greatest modern batsmen as well as the ODI and T20 national captain.

If it aint broke, don't fix it, like Cowan, I'd be surprised if he went home.

His success has as much to do with the coaching setup, and the experience around him in the nets (Ponting, Bailey, Cosgrove etc) as it is about his natural talent. He also gets to practice against Hilfenhaus, Bird, Butterworth, Faulkner in the nets.

He's also in a very strong side, players want to win, Tassie > NSW.

remember when everyone jumped on the Kurtis Patterson bandwagon and broke it? better let this guy develop...

still has a first class batting average of 163. inexplicable that he was dropped for the next game.

has stuggled in grade cricket since through combination of injury and lack of form.

as for silk he'll be a shot to go on the aus a tour as a speculative selection. won't be going on the ashes though.

Patterson and Maddinson will be fine. They just need a few years to find themselves.

Consistency and reliability is the last thing any talented sportsman develops, yet for some reason we expect all these young prodigies to start displaying it practically immediately.

got dropped a 1000 times in the shield final, far from an exemplary batting display.

like agar let him develop, cricketers generally arent ready for international rigors in their early 20s

He got dropped twice, you will find a lot of hundreds with a missed chance in them. I remember Punter scoring 200 after being dropped, was still a good innings.

Agree though he needs to develop. He's playing sides for the first time and it's a bit of 'who the hell is this guy?'. Sure pick him on the Aus A tour but we need to see how he goes next year, especially the back end when opposition teams start to understand his weaknesses and strengths and see how he adapts to that.

i reckon maddinson is one hell of a talent, i've said multiple times he and lynn are the two most talented out of the youngsters playing shield cricket, but i get the impression he is a little bit soft. i could be wrong. i'd love to be wrong, actually.

This.

Talent can only take you so far.

People on here see the flashy shot selection from these guys in the short formats and fall for it.

Mental application, determination, temperament, patience, concentration etc etc is 10 x more important in a batsmen.

Silk has the mental toughness in spades.

Agree totally, which is why we shouldn't be jumping the gun with Silk. I'm up for giving him the A tour, since we don't really have any other viable opening options, but I wouldn't be selecting him for the Ashes any time soon (unless he absolutely DOMINATES for Australia A, like, centuries every game).

His performances against the Men have been greater than his output in the Futures and Boys comp... What that means, I'm not sure but I wouldnt be getting too excited just yet. Give the kid a run for another year...

Maddinson seems to have issues with temperament at the crease. It's important to know when to put the lofted shots away for a while and I dont see him doing that just yet...

Problem is he doesn't really have much else in his armory. He's a brilliant striker of the ball, but he's horrible at picking up singles and twos. If he's not playing big shots, he gets completely bogged down. It's something he really needs to add to his game before he can develop into a Test-level batsman.

He's the Aussie domestic version of Angelo Matthews.

Well, he may not have been making 100s in those matches, but he was making runs. If you look at his profile on Cricinfo, you'll see that he's been making runs in various forms all season. Just started converting starts into 100s when it really counted. Too soon to really talk about him getting a Baggy Green or anything, but should be seriously considered for the A tour (they should seriously consider just sending the Tassie Shield side, actually). Definitely one to keep an eye on for the future, though.

The Aussies need converters. Lost count of the starts we screwed up in India... Anyway... Massive yes for an A tour for me, but nothing more until he proves himself at that level

That's a fair effort in a 358 ball innings.

Based on that alone, the guy's going to be special.

i just grow tired of everyone on here jumping on someone who makes a couple of scores. the shear dearth of talent on offer just highlights these little blip innings in between all the other rubbish.

he tonned up, on a pancake after being dropped several times, one being a real lolly at slip.

lets see him have a couple of seasons averaging 40 or so before we take him to an ashes

Agree with most of what you are saying but the 100 he made in the first inning of the shield final was FANTASTIC. May have had a couple of chances but batting was tough on the wicket, a lot tougher than Boof thinks. No team scored faster than 2.6 for an individual inning and the only reason we made more than 300 was due to Silks and Cossies opening stand.

As for the other ton well the only other bloke to ton up in that match was a certain RT Ponting, I think he went okay.

Still great start to a career, but thats all it is, a start.
