Our ruck stocks were so bad that we needed two so we had backup.

Speaking of which, with Visentini playing today, Soldo must be close to 3rd in line and there have been rumours of a trade so we could get a 2nd rounder for him if we decide to do that.

I get what you're saying but Sweet was basically a free hit.

Soldo one is so bad now.

We paid a high price for Esava to work out he makes our backline worse too.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing!

Soldo was doing a great job early on, while some were saying here that we had actually wasted our time getting Sweet! I am stoked we got both. Who knows who will be needed in finals!

As for BZT ... Has proved to be a very useful pickup. Once again proving all the naysayers wrong!

The Soldo Trade was necessary. You couldn't have just a 20 year old kid and someone who had only played a dozen AFL games as your only rucks.

But we probably gave away too much for Soldo. But I wouldn't have said that after Rd 11. Soldo started the season playing well for us and Sweet struggled. But Jordan has taken on the responsibility as the main man with great style.
 
Have the feel that he could be like Darcy Cameron to help us win it!
 
The Jordon Sweet story is a story as long as footy itself.

A great ruck is playing for a team and their 2nd ruck has been building form over 4 years or so in the Reserves and can't get a sniff of a game.

The team is super happy with their AA ruck and not too concerned about losing their 2nd ruck and gives them away for peanuts.

Rucks take time to develop and the new team doesn't have to wait four years or so to develop as he comes a bit ready made and out of 'nowhere' he plays good footy.

Given our hideous rucks last year, Sweet is a breath of fresh air bordering and continually moving towards a tornado of form.
 
He is going against Rhys Stanley next week so he should be ready to rock and roll.

For mine, it just depends on where Visentini is at. If he's coming on and can be a backup ruck then all of a sudden Soldo is redundant and we could look to grab another young ruck. If Vis has a way to go, it would be prudent to keep Soldo.
 
At the start of the year he looked befuddled by the ground ball, now he picks them up and if he can't farm them out he barges into tacklers like a front rower, gets a few metres then contests the ball up. Has really matured over the year.

I’d cash out of Big Ivan and find a draft horse in a state league or someone else’s reserves. A net return of a second round pick and circa $500k of salary cap space per year is too much to keep him as a backup.

Got towelled up by max gawn which is nothing to be ashamed of but other than that has been really strong.
 
The fact of the matter is we don't need a player of Soldo's age and quality as second ruck and Soldo won't want to be playing SANFL most of next year.

Its mutually beneficial to say goodbye and get a little bit of currency for him.

Visentini is a perfectly adequate second ruck and we can bring in a younger ruck as an understudy next year.
 
The last Port ruckman who could take a pack mark from 3 or 4 deep and then go back and calmly tonk it through the comic cuts post high from 50 metres out was Brendan Lade.

Paul Marrett did it on occasion for the Maggies but that was more than 50 years ago, and while Matthew Primus was an exceptional ruck and Dean Brogan an excellent work horse neither of them could do it, so to pick up Sweet for what we gave up to get him was an absolute steal, and it's no coincidence that Port's run of good form coincides with his.

The Soldo situation could be interesting, he obviously came here to be an AFL regular but the form of Sweet has pushed him down the pecking order, and with Visentini being preferred to him yesterday he is unlikely to be that happy being 3rd cab off the rank, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility he could either request a trade and/or be part of a trade orchestrated by the club to get someone else they may have their sights on.

Injuries happen. Having other options also gives us the ability to not run Sweet into the ground.

Visentini showed last night that he is still very raw.

Having Soldo as a back up in such a non-issue.
 
So moves on to Geelong next.

Pretty comfortable with him against Stanley particularly if Jordon can keep his clearance numbers up. Has been a concern you have to share the load. 6 clearances against Freo matched anyone else.
