Good player.

I don't have him close to #1 though, and I think it would be a mistake for a side to take him that high.

Your top few midielders (imo), have to have the frame to put on significant weight down the track.

You look at all the top midfielders, they are all incredibly strong or big bodies.

Cotchin and Ablett have incredible core strength that was evident in their play from day dot.

Watson, Pendlebury, Kennedy, Judd, etc etc are all that 6"2+ frame that you could tell would be able to bulk up.

Kelly is a twig, and whilst possibly becoming that elite running wingman, I can't justify him being top of the pile for the reason he will never be an elite contested ball winner in my eyes, because of his size.

More of a 5-10 selection imo, a side wanting some outside run to add to the midfield.

He's more of a Luke Power type if that makes sense.

Personally I think he is a Pick 3-7. Great player and he has a huge tank and a good 3km time trial time. He was almost picked over Hogan in the mini-draft so I think that just goes to show how highly he is rated. If he can put on about 7kg he should be a great midfielder.

If he puts on 7 kg's he'll be 75 kg's.

In the modern game, he needs about 15kg's, which is huge on a midfielder.

As I said, more a skinny wingman than a ball winner, which will see him slide imo.

No reason he can't put on weight though, dogs supporters were skeptical about Macrae when drafting him because he looked like someone who couldn't build a frame and he already put on 6 kgs in his first preseason. Don't see why Kelly couldn't do the same.

The way everyone here is describing him though he does sound perfect for us and I wouldn't be surprised if we picked him up this year (seeing as we will most likely be in the range for him) the icing not the cake.

Macrae's dad is huge and his mother is an athlete.

Some kids just don't have the capacity to add weight - Jarrad Grant.

Ahh really I didn't know that, but there was a fair bit of talk from Dogs supporters questioning if he could put on weight or not, so I was going by that, basically I just mean that it is too early to tell, who knows how they might end up when put in an AFL environment.

Yup, but recruiters cover that sort of stuff off pre-draft (unless your surname rhymes with Blayton).
Murphy was drafted as a matchstick, ditto Leon Cameron, both never put on too much weight but still forged long careers.

Seeing photos of Robbie Warnock as an 18 year old would have put doubt in a few minds. A real rake.

Yep, Macrae's dad is a big unit - back in the day I was mates with Macrae's brother (when I was 12... lol) - I can't remember if his mum was an athlete though, his parents have been split for a while - are you talking about his mum or his dad's partner?? (just out of interest)

Macrae went high because of his x-factor, he'll definitely bulk up - but if you have x-factor you don't need that huge contested ball winning ability to be a top 5/6 pick.

Kelly doesn't have x-factor, he's more a Gaff type - although Gaff was a solid inside ball winner at junior level.

Thought on Kelly now? Haven't seen any of him myself, but the comments in this thread from earlier in the year don't exactly scream pick 3 which is what he is being touted as. Have your thoughts on him risen?

Yes. Had an impact in the U18 Champs and then he also performed well for Sandy. Brighton Grammar should also be happy with his output.
