Maybe we'll one day see all footballers wearing helmets. Although we don't see this very often, there are concussions every week and the effects may be there and unreported years after retirement. It's a pretty high risk sport in regard to this.
Very sad for a player to sustain any career-ending injury, but the brain is such a delicate organ and one that is so much more important than any other. Aside from the obvious effects, the psychological strain and worry would be awful as well.
I hope his noggin recovers and he can lead a full life.
Health first, footy second
Tough decision for the kid but the correct one
Good luck in your recovery Justin and I hope you stay involved with the footy club in some way
I was looking for the words to express my appreciate of Justin and I was going to say he looked to be on track to be a club legend. But you are right. He is a club legend! This guy is already a legend
The scary thing for me isn't so much the big hits and risk of serious injury- that's always been a known risk. It's the idea that every collision could cause 'micro-concussions' and potentially irreparable damage. Makes me quite glad that I've only played contact sports a few times, really. The problem is that very few football collision concussions are from the hit to the head but rather from the movement of the brain inside the skull as a result of the jolt of the impact. Helmets are pretty much ineffective there.
Maybe we'll one day see all footballers wearing helmets.
