Justin Clarke Announces Retirement

Rotten luck for Justin and the club - I had such high hopes for him right from the start.

I join the many who wish Justin the very best in future regarding his health and career.

Sad day for all involved but 100% the right decision. Big Jase needs to think of his long term health and life after football. To be honest i don't think it was even a decision, by the sounds of it he is still really struggling.

Really wish Justin well for the future - which fingers crossed should be a bright one with his intelligence.

For the club it's another hit as we spent time getting 56 games into the big fella but life moves on and we just have to keep playing the kids down back and watch them develop.

Maybe we'll one day see all footballers wearing helmets. Although we don't see this very often, there are concussions every week and the effects may be there and unreported years after retirement. It's a pretty high risk sport in regard to this.
Very sad for a player to sustain any career-ending injury, but the brain is such a delicate organ and one that is so much more important than any other. Aside from the obvious effects, the psychological strain and worry would be awful as well.
I hope his noggin recovers and he can lead a full life.

The problem is that very few football collision concussions are from the hit to the head but rather from the movement of the brain inside the skull as a result of the jolt of the impact. Helmets are pretty much ineffective there.

Wow im actually so shocked and feel for this young fella. Really wanted him back when you drafted him as a rookie. Took all the big guys and carried your defence when key players were down and showed so much for such a young player. Its a pity but reading the memory loss part especially its quite frightening and he will be benefited in the long run.

Shit news for everyone but the right call was made in the circumstances. Enjoyed watching Clarke develop these past few years, certainly a smart footballer and a smart person, just glad he has come to terms with it and hopefully it isn't too late and he makes a full recovery. All the best for this year guys.

Haven't read the Age article, but SEN reporting that according to the club, Justin is only 60% right yet. This could end up having ramifications for his pilots license too.......Geez.

Can only hope time will heal his problems and doesn't stand in the way of a very promising career.

Thanks Justin, all the very best to you.

Life is bloody cruel sometimes.

Health first, footy second

Tough decision for the kid but the correct one

Good luck in your recovery Justin and I hope you stay involved with the footy club in some way

Yeah, good chance he is keen to get back to South Australia, but if he is hanging around here while he finishes his studies, it would be great if the club found him a part time role either in the footy department or upstairs.

Nothing much to say but...

Well done on what looked like a very promising career.

Thank you Clarkey for your work ethic and love of the team.

Take care, get well. Go on to great things in other fields of endeavor.

You will be missed. Always a Lion.

The scary thing for me isn't so much the big hits and risk of serious injury- that's always been a known risk. It's the idea that every collision could cause 'micro-concussions' and potentially irreparable damage. Makes me quite glad that I've only played contact sports a few times, really.

That is incredibly sad on all aspects. Although, once the dust settles he will be an incredibly smart young man, who has full brain function and can go on to pursue a brilliant career in engineering or as a pilot. It won't be out on the Gabba in front of us, but equally as challenging and rewarding.

Oh my god. Reading about this is both upsetting and scary, and clearly the right decision was made - I'll certainly miss him though. Best wishes for the future!

The kid deserved a lot better than the dice he's ended up rolling.
Good luck to him, and best of health. A very smart young man, and also a talented footballer. Sad that one skill has to go, but definitely a necessity so that the other skill stays with him.

We won't, unless there is a helmet that can prevent your brain moving inside of your skull. If you wear a helmet you perceive risks differently so it actually could result in more concussions.
